In this excerpt from our Richie Faulkner Tone Masterclass, watch as Richie discusses how he stepped into the legendary line-up of Judas Priest and was asked some questions he wasn’t expecting!
In this revealing interview, Richie shares the unexpected and laid-back nature of his audition process, which, of course, tested his musical skills, but, more importantly, his ability to mesh with the iconic band.
Plus, we hear how Glenn Tipton subtly tested him without Richie realizing it while he was “getting his sound.”
From borrowing train fare from his mother to meeting with the band’s iconic members like Glenn Tipton and Rob Halford, Richie’s story is one all guitarists should listen to, as you never know when a crucial coffee break could turn into a life-changing moment.
Discover how Richie’s approach to the guitar audition, without the presence of an audience but under the keen ear of Glenn from the stairs, led to the realization that the search for a guitarist was finally over.
Listen to Richie’s advice for guitarists when joining an established band, his respect for Judas Priest’s legacy, and how he was encouraged to bring his own unique flare to the audition while still respecting the sound of Judas Priest and KK Downing before him.
Hear directly from Richie about the challenges and expectations of replicating classic solos, creating his own interpretations, and the importance of ‘the hang’-fitting in with the band’s culture off-stage.
Whether you’re a fan of Judas Priest, an aspiring musician, or just love a good rock ’n’ roll story, this video is a must-watch!

In my opinion he has pushed Priest to be the best band it can be in the twilight of its life! The new album is a masterpiece.
Agreed, but the new album is mediocre. Only a couple of songs would make it into painkiller
Your first statement is 100% correct! Your second is nonsense.
Their new album rocks and represents what Judas is today, not 1987.. Painkiller is an awesome album in it own right..
After regrettable departure of K.K., the band had enormous fortune to have met and adopted Richie. In a similar way like after having had dismissed Dave they had real luck to get Scott Travis. I think Richie is the best that could've happened to them that late into their career.
@@saturnskull1242 ha, it blows Painkiller (the album) away
Nothing is more metal than finishing the solo of Painkiller as your aorta is filling your chest with blood. Legend
Richie Faulkner is so humble. There are not a million other guitar players better than him. There is no better player than him for Priest . He is a perfect fit.
Yes there is: KK.
I can never understand why KK or anyone would ever leave Judas Priest, but there is only one replacement and its Richie, I seen Priest with KK and with Richie and it was each time epic awesome.
This guy has rejuvenated Priest.
preiest is done - halfords voice is shot
@@bikeman1x11 yeah that’s why they just came out with the metal album of the year.
@@scooter29 metal is dead and new priest sucks - in the 80's awesome now theyre just another dinosaur act- i saw them on friday and halford was awful - faulkners played well ill give him that - but Sabaton blew them away'
Wow the hate on here is unreal
@@bikeman1x11and yet here you are in the comments...😅😅😅
'Firepower' is up there with the greatest Priest albums.
Richie is living his dream and making the most of it. Good on him.
Richie is the perfect bridge of youth and talent that brings Priest through this latest era. Him and Sneap's production are so important to the whole thing.
Yeah Andy makes the albums sound amazing and I saw them couple of weeks ago. Andy is one hell of a guitarist too
I guess compared to Halford he's young....but Richie is 45.....he's not young.
@@thefrogking481well ya, relatively speaking. If Tipton 76, Hill, 72, Halford 72. then Richie at 44 yrs old is youth.
This is one of those rare times where a legend has been replaced and most people are happy and excited about the new member. I'm so happy they didn't take the "hired gun" approach with Ritchie and let him be a true member because that would have been an awful waste of talent. Myself I think he's EXACTLY what Priest needed and I hope he stays with them till the end.
What an honor to have Glen's approval
Richie seems so grounded, hes a perfect fit for this legendary band. Creativity seems to be underrated and Richie has plenty of that.
Saw him CT a few nights ago. Was thrilled he was on my side of the stage. His energy and guitar playing is exceptional and he’s very interactive with the crowd!
Thank God they hired him. Best thing that's happened to them since Scott Travis joined
I think he’s underestimating his capabilities if he believes there are a million better guitarists than him out there. He’s an exceptional guitarist.
He's incredible!
his attitude is what got him the gig
Recently there is a flood, a locust swarm of incredibly crafty technical players, some of them in their teens. But for the real talent, musicianship, human inventiveness, imagination and emotion, 99% of those shredders fall short whereas Richie delivers.
Humble man, great guitar player!!! For him to survive the 10 and a half surgery he had to endure was truly a blessing.
That is a gorgeous flying V.
It really is!
The new Explorer looks amazing too
I did no5t notice...but yes indeed.@@infinidominion
@@jmgmarcus808 i think yesterday was first time we've seen it in action 😎 just beautiful
It looks good but I would prefer the regular pick guard to see more of the Pelham Blue.
This is the kinda content I like to see props. Faulkner is perfect for Priest and seems like all round standup guy...I stumbled upon Ritchies covers on his channel years ago and have loved his playing and tone since then
Love Ritchie, and the current lineup ! ❤
Saw him live 3 weeks ago. Amazing show. Rob was fantastic too.
Richie is one of the most talented guitarists that i have ever seen. This new album is a masterpiece. Every track hits so hard and those riffs and solos are top notch. Previous Priest album where i really felt like there is something very special going on is defenders of the faith. This invisible shield goes right up there with that one for sure. Amazing record from legendary band.
He pushed new energy to Judas Priest. He have a beautiful so clasic and vintage sound. He is better and better over the years....new album is great, and also his "Horns for a Halo" from 2023 was a great essentials of hard rock and heavy metal. I'm a big fan. Greetings from Poland 🤘
I saw Richie play in a metal covers band in Camden 20 odd years ago! There is nothing that compares to a brilliant guitarist up close owning every note..he was exceptional...his tone and performance was always a joy! No suprise he joined JP...Les Paul ..Marshall..and maybe some pedals inbetween in the right hands is heavenly!
Metalworks at The Fusilier And Firkin. I saw him play in a few London pubs, he was leagues ahead of anyone else you could see in those venues.
One of my favorite guitarists. Best surprise is when Richie joined TOOL on stage during Jambi in Nashville
Richie is awesome and belongs in Judas..
Thank you Richie!
Good point that he mentioned they were also looking for a decent band mate that they can hang out tours with not just only a technical guitar player or showman
Love listening to Richie! One of the coolest guitar stories ever!
Couldn't agree more!
I've listed to that new Priest album about 500 times in a row and it gets better every fucking time I hear it.
Favorite track?
@@gibson Devil in Disguise but I love every song. There's not a bad song on the album
@@terrycolletti6793 Yeah I don't even have favourites anymore. All of them. But Gates of Hell is such a classic heavy metal song and the solos as on every song make my Flying V look at me with envy. I can't play them like he does...
I wanted to not like KK’s replacement.. but no such luck. Now he’s my favorite guitarist and I feel he’s the best metal guitarist alive.
He’s a legend for sure!
If you take the blinders off and really compare the two players, they're not even in the same league.
@@theodosios2615 Youre right. Richie is much better, and doesn't gripe as much
@@mattmurray517 Richie is technically MUCH better.. but could HE have written/co-written allllll those killer old songs and riffs ??? Everything worked out great. Let’s not forget KK tho..
no way :-) literally no way to dislike RF
I have that same Gibson Explorer but mine is a 1983 custom shop korina with gold hardware.
I have the Richie Faulkner Epiphone V. I love it. Gibson, please release an actual Gibson Faulkner V. I love the Epi but nothing says cool like an actual USA made Gibson.
If you wanna pay Gibsons inflated prices....
NOT JUST THE GREAT INTERVIEW,,,,OH,,,THE TOYS THEY HAVE,,,AND SURROUNDED BY,😮😮😮😮❤
LOOK at that 'checkerboard' flooring, can we say Freemason much? Love Ritchie's playing !He seems a very cool guy for sure! I met the entire band i 2005 they all seemed very down to Earth and friendly!
I would like to personally thank Richie at the Masters of Rock Festival for their new LP Invincible Shield, because he is the main character behind the scenes and there are still a-holes who call him a replacement. Richie is Judas Priest right now.
Good player is Richie. The real deal.
Faulkner was the perfect person to replace KK. He's totally taken over Priest since he joined! The new album is totally amazing!!! And Glenn's playing has drastically changed since Ritchie joined the band. Glenn is now just as fast as Ritchie and his solos are more intricate than ever! I've played electric/classical guitar for 45 years and I can't figure out what Ritchie is doing - he's all over the place!!!
❤❤❤❤
Where did you see the advert and how did you get the interview lol
ha! In the full interview he said he got an email and actually thought it was FAKE! Imagine NOT replying to that!
Priest were on fumes before Richie kickstarted them back to life. Between the poor management, the internal bickering and the beginning of Glenn’s slow descent into his own personal Parkinson’s tragedy, they were as good as finished. I would have never bet that in the twilight of their respective careers, between Priest and Maiden, Priest would be the more compelling band in 2024.
Ian Hill co-founded Judas Priest, and he's not even involved in the selection of KK's replacement?
Preparation meets opportunity.
I'm by no means a decent guitar player. I wouldn't even call myself good. I own an 86 Gibson V. I've played around with a Faulkner Sig and it's a beautiful guitar. If I could come across one at a steal I'd get it.
And honestly? Richie Faulkner is one of the nicest guys in Rock. I've met him on more than one occasion.
Is the Gibson guy wearing extensions ?
A wise person once told me that rule number one is "fresh breath."
5:30 - the contradiction is Sneap can barely get through the songs sans solos..so how’d he get in? He’s been on stage with them for years now and still Richie has to cover most of his leads for him
Gibson needs to make more floyd rose Vs. Do more, guys
Priest has kept nup with the Joneses they are a great power metal band now and with the addition of Andy Sneap it's all fantastic To Richie must be from the east end cause if you close your eyes itt sounds like Steve Harris talking
😈🔱👿..seems like a nice guy ..despite the thumb ring 😂
Not to be mean but the interviewer was confusing both Richie and me about what Richie meant.
Riddle me this batman how many flying v guitars is enough? the answer is you can never ever have too many flying v's.
Still can't afford socks though Richie - ask Rob for a pay rise? 😊
at those levels you need to get alone w people than just a hired gun
I think KK won this game. KKs Priest its a much better band that this last Priest, what tells us a lot about their history.
They couldn't get someone better to talk to him?
They tried to call you to do it, but you were too busy annoying people on the internet.
And you are whom? A nobody
you musty rat wasting time on comments
I lost interest after KK left. Tbh I've hated everything they've done since Rob rejoined. I was expecting them to take off after Painkiller and carry that style fwd but they retrogressed. Glenn is fucked and should just hang it up and enjoy his retirement. Andy Sneap standing in for him takes the biscuit. Its a cabaret act. Same with Rob. He's past his prime and should just retire. Ritchie is a great guitar player and top bloke but why is he wasting his life with these dinosaurs? He should've started his own band. KK on the other hand is still kicking ass with KK's Priest and has ensembled a young band that can really deliver the goods.
Have you listened to Invincible Shield at all?
Wrong
I’m ashamed to admit I thought Faulkner was American
The British accent didn't raise any flags?
@@theodosios2615 tThis is the first time I ever heard him speak
