We have a small relative to the halibut here in New Zealand. we call them flounder though and they are absolutely delicious to eat!!! we like to fry them in butter with the skin on and then add some cream and chopped up brown onions and then you have a good old kiwi dish "Flounders and cream"..
I’ve only taken one halibut over 100lbs, (101lbs) and it was my first big fish. Every triple digit since has been released, because only females reach the 80+ range and lay hundreds of thousands of eggs. The 10-25 pounders taste much better too
brett mehrer I didn’t say that. I’m saying that all these huge fish taken are female. Pacific male halibut rarely exceed 45pounds. A 300 pound female lays more eggs than 12 pound females, right?
You make an excellent point and It's good to see the folks are paying attention to the NEW 2017 regulations. That said, when I made the statement in 2016, it was in fact illegal.
Jim, our fishing regulations are only a synopsis of the Alaska Administrative Code. The code was changed last year to reflect a practice commonly done for decades in Alaska to dispatch large fish, particularly halibut. I've not heard of anyone being cited for shooting large halibut. In fact, it's one of the safest ways of handling these fish before bringing them aboard. A fish that size can easily break someone's leg or knock someone overboard as they thrash about. They're a powerful creature. Most likely the intent of the law prior to the change had nothing to do with dispatching large halibut at the boat. Someone from the Alaska Board of Fisheries would know the answer to that one. We take our regulations very seriously here in Alaska. That's especially true of the commercial operators, who are nearly always under closer scrutiny than the rest of us. These guys are not lawbreakers; far from it. Go to their site and read their page on how to release fish if you want to see what they're all about; best article I've ever read on responsible catch and release methods. They genuinely care about the resource. anglingunlimited.com/fishing/catch-release-properly/ "5 AAC 75.027. Use of explosives or toxicants (a) The use of any explosive or toxicant for taking any fish in the waters of Alaska is prohibited, except that a shaft tipped with an explosive charge, commonly known as a bangstick or powerhead, or a firearm may be used on board a vessel in salt water to kill a fish caught with legal gear. (b) Repealed 6/26/2016. "
They're a white meat fish! Much like cod but better! Very expensive to buy here in the US. Many people like to bread it and deep fry it! Mild flavored.
For the guy whining about catching and shooting this fish where do you think that halibut steak in your grocery store comes from you bonehead. Great job bringing that one in, I am jealous, I grew up in Sitka and the biggest one I caught was about 140 lbs but it filled our freezer and we ate good for the better part of a year
Than you’d know this was a female and can lay hundreds of thousands of eggs. Makes get to maybe 45 pounds. You let breeders go. And this isn’t where halibut in store comes from. That halibut is caught on a long line. This is sportfishing.
I work for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and can absolutely assure you that your understanding of this is inaccurate. I will have one of our staff or AST contact you. Hopefully they can better explain the regulations.
5 dollars says you can`t tell if it was from a big fish or small. commercial catch big uns all the time, you think they are letting them go? I think not.....
+scootdog5 You will lose $5 for that because you CAN tell. And the halibut caught by commercial fishing are actually separated by size when brought into the processor with a different price for different size halibut. The really big halibut like these will extremely grainy, stringy, tougher meat...
Female halibut can reproduce at 12 lbs...like most animals the very old females will become barren and no longer be able to reproduce. Also like most animals as they get older their meat changes..can be bigger grained, tuffer or softer.... This does not make an animal not good to eat.. example: veal compared to bull meat..in cattle life cycle...Who just eats veal ?? While you might think fried halibut is best in an under 50lb fish.. (I do. ).You may also like over 50 lbs halibut as fish and chips..which I do too If you catch a halibut, do what you want to with it as long as it is legal..I fish to feed myself and my family in Alaska..and keep and eat what I legally catch....period !!
Good Part: Bragging rights that will top that of any angler you will most likely ever talk to. Bad Part: Pulling it into the boat and someone has to clean it One of the few fish I have ever seen that might need a "Double Tap" to turn out the lights.
i agree also 70 pounds is my max I will keep, but ideally 30-50 pounds is the perfect size. Over 100 pounds that female meat is way too thick and can contain worms. release the big female and keep her much smaller and tastier offspring.
Fact: 99% of anglers get more excited hooking up a fish than having sex with their wives and girlfriends! The guy saying "omg..omg!' I bet ya he's never moaned like that while having sex.
Course last fish and game guy u asked what legal size char. Was he said no bullshit as far as I know there's no fish in that lake. Been a wildlife trooper 17 yrs and less than four miles from lake and he didn't know shit. Most don't so I deal with biologists instead
All of us that fish these waters on a daily basis, would NEVER have kept it, pictures for sure, but never kill it. Theres not many of those big boys left and they produce many many more. The Turkeys are the very best eating (30 to 40 lbs) after that they start to become more fatty, which is ok for deep fried but..this is just one fishermans thoughts. It was obviously a charter, the boat Captain just sees $
Just another example of why fish stocks the world over are rapidly depleting. People just dont understand..the sea life thats been lost over the past 200 years..Its so sad
Love Halibut but killing one that big is a waste! Big time breeder and the meat was garbage anyone who has killed and eaten anything over 150lbs or even 100lbs can tell ya its not as good as 40's and 50's
WhaleBoatWilly Gabe is quite right. The larger halibut have a very grainy texture. the sub 50 pound fish are the best. Try not to make yourself look so foolish next time.
I work for the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and can absolutely assure you that it is 100% illegal to shot fish. I'll post the statute here once I get to the office in the morning.
+Jim Craig its shoot by the way and its not 100% illegal i have friends and family that live up in homer and they have been fishing for halibut there for 50+ years and all the huge halibut they have come across in those 50 years they have used a small shotgun to shoot it and harvest the fish in the boat
You are talking out of your ass and it stinks. I live in S/E AK and we always soot the big ones. Also, for you wannabee biologists that think you know something, research shows that the small number of really big fish harvested does NOT impact the sustainability of the fish stocks. It hurts nothing to keep large fish. Any fish over 80 pounds is female and produces 500,000 eggs each year. Taking an 80 pounder is more harmful than taking a 400 pounder because the 80 pounder has many years of breeding left and the 400 pounder does not. Point is, STFU if you don't know shit form Shinola.
Noel Panzer The thing is there meat is not as good as the smaller size , Makes you wonder how much meat goes to waste when they realize it . Also the larger halibuts are females , the reproducers of the halibut stock.
61wayne They stop reproducing when they are really large so I would be my last dollar that big girl has done all her work in the past and was just eating other fish for a living in her old age!!!
As I mentioned above, research shows it is far better to harvest a 200, 300, or 400 pounder than an 80 pounder because you only take ONE big one to fill the freezer, you kill 4 or 5 smaller ones that are far better breeders.
wow great, greetings from us in Indonesia
We have a small relative to the halibut here in New Zealand. we call them flounder though and they are absolutely delicious to eat!!! we like to fry them in butter with the skin on and then add some cream and chopped up brown onions and then you have a good old kiwi dish "Flounders and cream"..
Holy crap that sounds delicious!
We have those too!!!
Yep, flounder are all over the US Pacific coast! Yes they are good eating too!
The ones up here if you don't flay them out quick enzymes start to break down the meat into mush.
Just a curious question, is it even possible to catch and release those big Halibut?
OMG what a very nice catch I bet that was some good eating
thats a huuuuge fish! good job on taking that in phil and the rest
A large female like this is a producing baby maker. I have always let them go to produce more halibut. I'm happy with an 80-100 lb male any day.
Đúng là cầu ngoài biển tuyệt thật toàn cá to giật sướng thật👍

Jim Craig it's never been illegal. God your a clown. Stop embarrassing yourself. Looked ya up ya summer fish counter.
Is this a commercial vessel?
If the man filming would have done what he was ask to do instead of trying to tell the captain how to do his job we would have seen all of it!
What do halibut taste like? We don't get them in australia
They're a white meat fish! Much like cod but better! Very expensive to buy here in the US. Many people like to bread it and deep fry it! Mild flavored.
Nice job you guys!
Holey Halibut w/ macaroni, yummy!
What was that?? A 22?? That size fish needs a 357! Damn!

Halibut every day? No, thank you. And who are you talking about? You grew up there. Why'd you leave? Probably too much halibut on your plate... lol
Than you’d know this was a female and can lay hundreds of thousands of eggs.
Makes get to maybe 45 pounds.
You let breeders go.

Ok..... What happened ????. Must be magic.!!!! Live Fish in the water then dead fish in the boat. . How did they do it ?
BANG !!
I love grilled halibut. Shoot it, stab it, nunchuk it, I dont care. Just get it on my plate.
I work for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and can absolutely assure you that your understanding of this is inaccurate. I will have one of our staff or AST contact you. Hopefully they can better explain the regulations.
They shoot it so that it is not flopping around in the boat to break everything.. and everyone. up.
5 dollars says you can`t tell if it was from a big fish or small. commercial catch big uns all the time, you think they are letting them go? I think not.....

catch and release the big ones to breed. the smaller ones are better eating.
they dont...
idiot
Very true, I prefer 50lbs or under halibut. I use to keep my 200# halibut for show but not anymore, the texture is not good on the big ones.
Female halibut can reproduce at 12 lbs...like most animals the very old females will become barren and no longer be able to reproduce.

It's amazing what some folks will resort to doing with a shotgun. Some of my neighbors shoot moles while guys in alaska shoot fish!
Do the mole weight 200 plus pounds ??..asking for a friend who is learning disabled like you.
If the fish is big enough you have to shoot it or it will destroy your boat, they are very strong fish.
They have 400 lbs moles..oh lord..lol
Thats Alaskan fishing for ya
Why did he shoot it? He must be a pretty bad fisherman to have to shoot it.
+baba booey you shoot it to kill it if you bring it aboard alive they will tear your boat apart
An halibut half that size could break your legs like twigs and tear the boat up trying to pull it in the boat alive.
baba booey that way it doesn't brake someone leg when it's in the boat 430 lbs is big fir any fish or any thing for that matter right
Really you don't know why ?..yeah.. stay in your house.
Baba booey, you're as stupid as the real Gary Baba Booey! 😂
why shoot it why not just let it go if that was in the uk it be all over facebook and you get slaterd for it
Quite right and he was holding a Damn Rifle

It's Dick Moby!

Every sport boat in Alaska carries a gun for that. You don't want a 400 lb butt thrashing around in your boat!
maybe dont nring it up i the boat then dumb fucks

It's illegal to use a firearm to harvest fish in Alaska waters.
They used a pole to harvest the fish, and a firearm to dispatch the animal. There is a difference.
Your allowd to shoot the fish
