I owned a bar when this song came out. We had it on the jukebox and whenever this song came on people would start doing the walk like an Egyptian dance. It was comical seeing a bar full of drunks doing the walk like and Egyptian but everyone had fun doing it. LOL
Susanna Hoffs drove so many of us guys from this era crazy. I know this because I was one of them. We all had a crush on her. Man, do I miss those days!
They did a killer cover of Hazy Shade of Winter as well. So many great all female bands when music was still music and fun. Runaways, Clout, Peaches and soooooooo many more.
Yep, massive crush on Susanna Hoffs. I loved her look in that red dress when they're all dolled up and dancing like Egyptians too (and she's barefoot...oh man). Now I find out she recorded her parts naked? Really? Good grief. Probably a good thing I didn't know that back in my mid/late teenage years.
For those that don't know, Susanna Hoff's smokey-eyed side glance that she does was one of the definitive 80's music video moments. She hypnotized a generation of boys with it, myself included. In fact, I still am. If you know, you know.
No offense Maggie, as you have beautiful eyes as well, but damn..... Suzanna Hoffs.... did you see her eyes during he solo vocals "Walk like an Egyptian" She single-handedly melted and stole the hearts of EVERY male that had a heartbeat!
I cannot explain to you how awesome the 80's were. The US started 20 years of peace, there was this optimism all across the country. The Youth and youth culture was everywhere and everybody just had a ton of fun. The music was amazing and the vibe was infectious. it was a truly great time to be alive.
@@tofargone16 We still have crack and we just had a summer of back to back riots and burning cities to the ground. The problem is with people like you is you're just miserable and have ZERO interest in an even-handed perspective. Go be miserable elsewhere.
This is what I call an “80s anthem”. This song - and many others of course - pretty much represented popular music, styles, and attitudes of the time. The decade of my 20s…
Very few pop bands do much for me, but The Bangles had so much fun you couldn't help but like them. Also, they were about the same age as me, in the 1980s, so it felt quite satisfying to see young women from my generation do so well for themselves. As a fun fact, the bassist for The Bangles during their heyday, Michael "MIcki" Steele, had also been the bassist for The Runaways. The Runaways paved the way for The Bangles and many other female rockers.
This was fun Maggie!! I remember when this came out, I was in college, but it was a huge hit. and Suzanna's eyes in the last "walk like an Egyptian" mmmmmm. You talked about Happy in the video. You should check out Weird Al's version, "Tacky" if you haven't already. Keep on keepin' on, young lady!
Actually got to see The Bangles live in concert, on a double bill with the band Mr. Mister, another great 80's band. The whistling part of "Walk Like An Egyptian" was actually done on a keyboard at the concert, the girls didn't have to do real whistling, but it was a ton of fun.
There's an early Bangles tune, where each member of the band gets a chance to sing lead - Going down to Liverpool. The video for it features the late Spock actor Leonard Nimoy!
Thanks to my seventh grade art teacher, wherever she is. That's where I learned that pyramids were painted with images of food and game and all the things the pharoah would need in the afterworld...including servants. All those paintings, they believed, would come to life...and a servant with just one arm and one leg couldn't serve well at all, right? That's the reason for the pose. Thank you, ancient Egyptian artist, for making this song possible!
What a lovely trip down memery lane , i was a big bangles fan back in the day , my fave being 'hazy shade of winter ' would love to see u do that reaction 🖤

SNL alum Dennis Miller, as part of his stand up routine, had a bit where he'd claim to be able to do impressions, including one of the final solo singer here, Susanna Hoffs. He would pause, get into character, then with a slight half-smile and his face straight ahead, he'd have his eyes looking to his right, showing their whites on his left. And... that was it! 😂
The Bangles, of course, were more than Hoffs but the record company wanted the “hot chick” at the front. This pretty much broke up a band that had multiple talented singers singing. As several of the Bs said, doing the S&G cover, the Hazy Shade of Winter, which is one of the best covers even in my opinion, was like going back to the old days of the band because they al sang.
The 80's had badass 'hit the drums HARD' drumming, and Bangles on Hazy shade of winter is the very definition of that. And they are smart enough to let her stop drumming when they want to go softer, cause sh'es a real 80's drummer so when she's drumming its full force, period. Aah, the ultimate 80's band, the utimate 80's sound.
There are hot women. And then there is Susanna Hoffs. So spectacular the band broke up because the other 3 hot women couldn't cope with the fact we were all in love with her. Still hotter than 90% of women at 64.
It blows my mind anyone who hasn't heard this song! Anyone over 50 heard it a million times on MTV in the 80s. Plus I had to endure my little sister and cousin acting it out EVERY time they got together. And yes, I too adored Susanna Hoffs. Her side eye @ 20:00 hooked every red blooded guy! Manic Monday and their Hazy Shade of Winter cover are great as well.
I love your reactions and yes this was when we coukd just all have fun. . And we did when this song hit it hit the bars and a Great fun dance that everyone would jump up and do all together !! Such great times. . Keep having fun X0
How have you NEVER listened to Heart/Anne Wilson. Talk about females that are legends, Nancy on guitar is in my Top 10 and Anne is One of the best singers EVER! And they're sisters!
The Bangles were seriously under-rated! Loved this song, and Manic Monday (by Prince), and especially their official video cover of Hazy Shade of Winter by Paul Simon. Reportedly, Simon didn't like the cover but I think it's fire. It looks like a live performance with video clips from a movie whose title I can't remember. The guitar riff is the same as the Simon and Garfunkel version, but kicked up several notches! Also Dust Angels was a terrific song!

The Bangles were amazing at harmonizing together. The other unique thing about them is that just like the Beatles and KISS, they were a four-person band in which every member sang lead at least one song on their albums.

A good song of theirs that showcased each of the band's talents. Suzanna gets a lot of the credit, but as you can see, the others can play and sing equally well.
Michael Steele, the bassist, rarely gets the attention she deserves, but if you actually pay attention to the music, her bassline is absolutely what drives this song. I also think she's the most interesting singer in the band (her verse is the 2nd one).
I don't know if you've done this one - but i think you'd get a kick out of it. Georgia satellites - keep your hands to yourself. Another fun one of the 80s

A great performance, and a terrific take on the absolute insanity that accompanied the U.S. tour of the King Tut artifacts (you had to be there.)

The famous Susanna Hoffs eye movements
