There is a rendition of this song done more recently possibly 40 years after the original with full orchestra....might be right up your alley!! Enjoying the channel!!
One version of this song ends with the following poem: "Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day’s useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight. Red is gray and yellow white, But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion?"
@@jowbloe3673 Aye, you need to listen to the entire album. The first time I had seriously listened to the Moodies, we had all taken 3 hits of acid which was my first time. We listened to this and In Search Of The Lost Chord and I was in heaven, valhalla or if you're a Celt like me it's Tir non og which means the land of the young in Scot's Gaelic,
The radio version and the one pulled up by most left off that poem, a DJ explained to me the musical desonence does not play well to listerners so they cut at the end of the song. I love when I catch the full playout. And the gong...
I'm glad i grew up in the 60s and 70s. There was such a variety of types and meaningful across the genres. Also a lot more instruments like flutes and other wind instruments.
Justin Hayward has one of the greatest voices of any genre. There are many Moody Blues songs that exemplify his vocals. Here’s a few: Never Comes the Day; Voices in the Sky; The Artist; Watching and Waiting; Question; and from his collab with John Lodge, Bluebirds, I Dreamed Last Night. Solo, try Forever Autumn. My wife has always been entranced by his voice, especially the cracking. It just makes the emotion so real.
One of the greatest rock songs of the 60s and all time! Justin's powerful, emotional and lamentful vocals on 'how I love you' is the epitomy of pure love. Loved your reaction!
This album - Days of Future Passed - was recorded in the summer and fall of 1967 in the aftermath of the Beatles Sgt Pepper exploding on the scene. The image of the Moody Blues as Emo Beatles is especially fitting.
Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin live version at The Royal Albert Hall. With The World Festival Orchestra as "background band." You're welcome in advance.
This is from the album "Days of Future Past". It was a concept album about a day in the life of a man. Another hit from this album is "Tuesday Afternoon". The Moody's, over the years, had unwantingly developed a cult-like following. You might want to check-out "I'm just a singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)".
Moody blues has SO many great songs. I'm showing my age but my introduction to Moody Blues was in university. I was in the dorms and someone down the hall played Tuesday Afternoon every night especially when I was trying to sleep. It was an exceptionally pleasant experience
You may already know the story about this album. The Moody Blues were a rock and roll band with a number of hits when stereo recording was invented. The record company gave them money and said go make an album using stereo so we can see how it sounds. The record company was angry when The Moody Blues turned in this first concept album using a full Orchestra because they were expecting just rock and roll songs. However, when they released it the album became a big hit. You should listen to the other songs on the album they're almost as good as Nights In White Satin. And watch the official Nights In White Satin video which was recorded when they were older. The Orchestra plays a bigger role in the song, very emotional. Also, that is a great background.
It ends with the poem "Late Lament" written by drummer Graeme Edge. It starts with the words "Breathe deep the gathering gloom." Days of Future Past album. "Nights in White Satin" is the final song of the album and closes side two with "Late Lament". The album starts with "The Day Begins".
I’ve always loved the Moody Blues. Their songs had such special ‘moody’ sounds that could trigger one’s emotions. Awesome soft rock sounds. And they kept this up for over five decades. Great reaction, Maggie.
Thanks for the reaction gorgeous. I’ve been a huge fan of The Moody Blues for over 50 years. Justin Hayward has maintained a beautiful voice over the years. Thanks to everyone you mentioned. I look forward to hearing more MB reactions from you. Peace
The latest performance is even more incredible of this song live 13 years ago with a longer version with a full orchestra absolutely love! Check out on UA-cam as well. Awesome group!
Maggie when everyone was listening to the Beatles this is who I was listening to and at 75 they are still my favorite band of all time and I have been fortunate enough to see the live three times, enjoy this classic group!
Nights In White Satin was one of the Moody Blues' greatest hits, and it was one of their quieter songs. They had more energetic ones like Ride My See Saw and In Your Wildest Dreams. Their vocals and instrumentals lifted you to another world.
Love this song. In the early nineties, I worked for a West Coast regional record store chain (anyone remember The Wherehouse?). I worked in the corporate office. Occasionally, artists would visit us, sign autographs and sometimes do a little ad hoc performance. One of those artists was Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame. He performed an acoustic version of Knights. I was about 8 feet from the guy. A memorable day indeed.
This album is meant to be listened to as a whole, as it takes you through a night and a day. It was early progressive rock. I hope you'll listen to the full album cut of this sometime, if not the entire album. We loved this song then and still do,
I got the album "Days of Future Past" in the spring of 1970. I was late to the party but I was fortunate to see them live while I was stationed in Europe. I thought they were impressive then and still do. Great choice. Great reaction.
this was the 'last song' of jr high and high school dances - it was funny seeing people try to dance during the spoken part at the end.. Also...we used to think it was 'KNIGHTS' in white satin
Fall of '71 while in college, my best friend Stevie and I would go on Sunday evening to the pizza shop a get a pie and a pitcher of beer. Many times, this would be playing on the jukebox.
Their iconic song. However, there are so many other of their songs. You should also check out their live version of Nights at the Royal Albert Hall. Other top songs: Question, The Story in your Eyes, etc. My favorite album of theirs is On the Threshold of a Dream, though all of their work is superb.
Justin Hayward (lead singer). A great band with a deep discography. 1967 though the 90s. I have seen them 5 times and all concerts were great!!!! Ray Thomas was on the flute. Their albums are concept in nature and must me listened to all the way through. Classic Rock.
I love this song and with a full orchestra is evan better. One of my favorite things is when rock is combined with classical music and opera. One of my favorite groups was a group called The East Village Opera Company. I don’t think they are still around but they would sing opera’s in the origianl language but arranged like a rock group and with rock instruments. They were fantastic.
Audio from the original album Days of Future Past with '60's era film footage. Justin Hayward has a wonderful voice. He wrote this song at age 18 to woo his future wife. If you did Double Plays you could do a reaction to the '90's era live version which is equally awesome.
Maggie, with the Moody Blues, it’s EVERY song! Never have I heard a song from them that didn’t strongly affect me. They are AT LEAST the equal of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, U2, the Doors, Hendrix, Yes…all the greatest. You need to hear the full, ALBUM version (8 minutes) of the lead-in to this song, “Afternoon” which includes “Evening, (time to get away).” And listen to their 80s tunes from the Long Distance Voyager” album including “The Voice.” Also their timeless banger, “The Story in Your Eyes.” And of course the live concert version of this song done in the ‘90s(?) FINALLY there is the beautiful early music video of “Wildest Dreams” with a sweet cameo from their friend Elton John! Cheers!!
Yay Luna! Well done. For your personal collection, you will want to own their holy seven classic concept albums, ending in Seventh Sojourn. I can't say for sure beyond that. Loved your wondrous ebullient reaction, as always.

Maggie you're killing me!😃 I know it happens but gosh I wish this reaction was to the "complete" version which includes the poem at the end... That's how most of us heard this song when it came out. It truly made it a piece of art. For your own enjoyment you should look it up and listen to it. But other than my petty comments you know we all love your reactions and look forward to what is coming next!
"For My Lady" is a beautiful song by The Moody Blues" and a fan favorite. It's sung by one of their other vocalists, Ray Thomas. They have three lead singers!
If you ever get the chance you should listen to that album "Days of future past". It is truly a rewarding experience and something like you have never heard.
"Wake up Maggie (May/Reneé), I think I have something to tell you," sung by the inimitable Rod Stewart in his stunning song, Maggie May, and album "Every Picture Tells a Story." One of my other favorite albums of all time is the album "Days of Future Passed" by The Moody Blues, which debuted in 1967. I discovered their transcendant music at the tender age of 13 (I was a music student). I was blown away, especially by "Knights in White Satin," and listened to the entire album over and over again, and even my conservative parents approved (thankfully). The sublime music, harmonies, and poetry of The Moody Blues spoke to my young heart like nothing before. I recommend that you listen to the whole album, Maggie Reneé. You will not be disappointed. I sincerely thank you for this one . . ..
Seeing the Moody Blues with a full orchestra if beyond magical. My highschool mascot was the Lancer. This song to this day, from 1973 to now, has been the prom theme quite frequently.
Great reaction. PLEASE listen to the official live video done years later with a orchestra. I saw them with a orchestra and it was amazing. Justin Hayward voice is incredible.
Group had a hit with a cover of Bessie Banks' "Go Now" in late 1964. Three years later, they were back with a new sound, featuring the Mellotron. "Days of Future Passed" is a song cycle built around the hours of the day.
The Moody Blues are my favorite group of all time. They formed in Birmingham in 1964. "Nights In White Satin" is from their 1967 album Days of Future Passed. The Beatles chose to have the Moodies accompany them on their final concert tour in 1967. That was done in the UK. The Moody Blues were one of, if not the first group, in the progressive rock genré. Except for the flute solo by Ray Thomas, all of the orchestral sounds were played by Mike Pinder on the Mellotron. He also introduced the Mellotron to the Beatles who first used it on their Sgt. Pepper album. Justin Hayward played guitar and sang. John Lodge was on bass and Graeme Edge on drums. Days of Future Passed was the first of the Moody Blues' core seven albums released from 1967 to 1972. (Two albums were released in 1969.) They are: Days of Future Passed 1967; In Search of the Lost Chord 1968; On the Threshold of a Dream 1969; To Our Children's Children's Children 1969; A Question of Balance 1970; Every Good Boy Deserves Favor 1971 and Seventh Sojourn 1972. They have 16 studios albums. Their last, December, was released in 2003. Fourteen of them reached Gold or Platinum status by the RIAA. Their producer Tony Clarke called them the "world's smallest classical orchestra."
I saw the Moodies in concert twice, both times at Red Rocks. The 2nd time with the full orchestra that was captured on video. The Moody Blues are a great live performance.
You definitely got cheated not getting to hear the full version..I truly hope that you will find & listen to the full version to get the full feel & impact of the song.
Listened to this floating off an island in the Caribbean under a cloudless sky and a full moon dancing on the water. One obdurate memory I'll never lose.
Magnificent song and Band, you need to hear the version they did live with a full orchestra, beyond emotional. They are worth an extended review, they have many awesome tunes. They were up there with the Beatles, the WHO and the Rolling Stones for all time great British groups to come out of the 1960s. Do Legend of a Mind next, I could listen them all day! Their albums from 1967 - 1972 are as good a run as anyone ever had. Legends! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎻🎶🔥
You commented on the attire they were wearing. They were part of the "Mod Scene" that was very popular in England at the rime. Everyone Listens to this song, which is a great song worthy of being reacted to, but the whole album is worthy of a listen ( probably on your own time)
I bought this album the day it released, and won’t even hazard a guess as to how many hours I spent as a teen laying on my bed with and without headphones floating off with this music. I had their full album collection…..it took hours. Beautiful reaction, I can’t believe you’ve never heard this song or anything by Moody Blues before! As a singer you’re going to *love* this journey! And the Moody Blues provide quite a journey.
One of the comparatively few singles to be re-released, not as an oldie. It came out originally in November 1967, making number 19 in the U.K. and number 103 in the U. S. Reissued in August 1972, it made number 9 in the U. K., and went all the way to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Wow! Probably the most epic classical rock song of all, and you hadn't heard of it? I guess you didn't grow up listening to classic rock on the radio, as we did. This song dominated the air waves. At least FM, anyway. If memory serves me.They were the first group to blend these styles together. Mike Pinder's mellotron added the lush orchestral sound to the band's 7 core albums. He recently passed away, and was the ethereal, cosmic influence in their music, especially the ones he wrote. After he left the group around '79, they became more pop, but still fairly spiritual.
Maggie, try Tuesday Afternoon! About 20 years ago I had the pleasure of becoming friends with their drummer Graeme Edge. Graeme was truly a B E A U tiful person! RIP old friend.
you need to hear more of them - you may know that already, but if not, trust me - you do - you need all their greatest hits ... I suggest Tuesday Afternoon after this, but there are a number. If nobody sponsors them, then go and listen just for yourself, but either way - Do it! You will be happy that you did.

Enjoying the channel!!
YES….react to the more recent live performance!!!!
Yes and it seems he still has the same voice. He hasn't lost it with age. Hope Maggie does it as a then, and now comparison.
The original album version had full orchestra this is the cut down version for radio
The red rock concert was the best.
One version of this song ends with the following poem: "Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day’s useless energy spent. "Nights in White Satin" isn't over until I hear a gong.

To hear Justin's voice 40 years on you should hear this song live with full orchestration. "Moody Blues -- Nights In White Satin Official Live Video"
Justin Hayward (lead singer) wrote “Nights in White Satin” in early 1967. He was 19 years old at the time
They have been blowing minds since the 60s❤❤❤❤

They were supposed to be creating a new updated version of Anton Dvorak's "New World Symphony" when they recorded this instead.
Live at Red Rocks is one of my favorite musical experiences.
I grew up with this music back in high school. Always loved their music. Dates me, but there was so much great music back then.
The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd were my two favorite bands in the early nineties. On a sad note, Mike Pinder passed away last year (April 24, 2024).
It ends with the poem "Late Lament" written by drummer Graeme Edge. It starts with the words "Breathe deep the gathering gloom."
Days of Future Past album. "Nights in White Satin" is the final song of the album and closes side two with "Late Lament". The album starts with "The Day Begins".
For your own enjoyment watch the live verion from Royal Albert Hall
The fathers of progressive rock. Everyone else came after them. Their core seven albums are required listening.
This is arguably from the first prog concept album "Days of Future Passed" 1967
I’ve always loved the Moody Blues. Their songs had such special ‘moody’ sounds that could trigger one’s emotions. Awesome soft rock sounds. And they kept this up for over five decades. Great reaction, Maggie.
Watched Justin Hayward in concert last year! Still got it at the age of 78! 💚
The Days of Future Passed starts with very early morning and continues through a 24 hour day with Nights in White Satin ending the album.

He performed an acoustic version of Knights. I was about 8 feet from the guy. A memorable day indeed.
Yep, you take that memory into the great beyond, you are truly blessed!
I bought records at Wherehouse. Came in orange plastic shopping bags.
I still have original vinyl
The Days of Future Past.
Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, relax and let it envelop you like a warm hug . 🇨🇦

One of my favorite groups ever. A beautiful song of one of their last albums is called "Haunted ". A beautiful song about lost love.
One of the most beautiful moving songs of the 60's .
Still gives me shivers today .
I can still hear this crackling through an AM radio. Pop music used to be so different.

When he sings, "Oh, how I love you," you can hear pleading in his voice . . .
The voices of some singers age like vinegar. Justin Hayward's voice has remained the finest of wine for nearly 60 years.

Justin Hayward is still touring and still sounds great. Check out 'Forever Autumn' from War of the Worlds
Yes that’s great 👍 best listen to the complete Cd 😊

Cheers!!
The Moody Blues are one of the groups that you should really listen to the whole album in one sitting.
Seriously a good song especially the solo and message at the end
Which this video cuts out.

Listen to the live version.
The most beautiful love song of the whole rock history.
What you hear here is the late-60s birth of prog rock that produced some magical albums in the 1970s!
You definitely got cheated not getting to hear the full version..I truly hope that you will find & listen to the full version to get the full feel & impact of the song.
Next up:
Tuesday Afternoon
Tuesday Afternoon reminds of carrying my transistor radio while detasseling corn in Iowa.
The Moody Blues are considered the founding fathers of Prog Rock that came to dominate the late sixties through the early to mid seventies .
Listened to this floating off an island in the Caribbean under a cloudless sky and a full moon dancing on the water. One obdurate memory I'll never lose.
This is one song that can really move me, and at times I play conductor with the orchestra.
Mesmerizing like a trance of sound from time long ago.
Legends!

You commented on the attire they were wearing. They were part of the "Mod Scene" that was very popular in England at the rime. Everyone Listens to this song, which is a great song worthy of being reacted to, but the whole album is worthy of a listen ( probably on your own time)
I saw them live at Saratoga Springs.
You must hear the live version from the 80s. Just brilliant.
Yay, thanks for reacting to this
Recorded in 1967. Reached #2 in the U.S. in 1972.
Incredible with an orchestra
Need to see this done live with an orchestra
Your voice sounds beautiful when you're mimicking his singing.
