Hey Jonathan great video I agree vinegar and water works. I've also used that restoring vintage tools such as hand planes. One thing you want to also make sure you do is after it's done make sure you neutralize the metal because if not the vinegar will continue to eat it don't know if you've ever had that problem. What I like to use in cases like that is evapo rust gel great product leave it on for just a little bit and wipe it off then saying it like you did and you don't have to worry about it continuing to eat away at the metal like vinegar can sometimes do again great video keep them coming buddy I'm loving my dovetail jig by the way
thank you Katz . i had to laugh at myself due to rust . here is why . in the70s-80s i was a machinist at the end of everyday i would stop and clean and oil all the bare metal on what ever i used that day . now i got some wood working stuff as i had to retire due to health ( back lost it ) at 59 or 2012 . i found i could not sit still so wood working is next lol . i got rust on my stuff . you know we forget stuff as we age lol . then i remembered oh yes oil down the shinny metal . wipe it off when you need the machine . you are right 220 should not impact the flatness of what you are doing on light surface rust , even deep pitted rust and it can get deep . skip what you have too. on it .
Been doing similar for a couple years now and it is amazing the results you can get.
Add 1 tbs. of dish soap per cup of vinegar/water. On vertical surfaces the sticky soap helps the vinegar adhere to the surface; reducing the amount of vinegar mix used/needed because it will not simply run right off. Shake the spray bottle well before use.
The jeopardy music pushed way over the top. Loved it
Aloha Katz, instead of using paste wax consider using a water based poly such as minwax. Clean areas very well and try denatured alcohol first after your vinegar cleaning. Then apply a couple coats of the water based poly. You can even use a blue shop cloth and sand with 600 grit sand in-between coats. On Oahu we have lots of moisture so this tip has never failed me as I don't have to keep applying wax.
Great advice bud!
Perfect timing! I just bought a used jointer with some light rust on the tables. Well, I know what I’ll be doing this weekend. Thanks for the video! 😁
Get it!
Nice video! I've never tried vinegar as a rust remover. Have to try that out. Thanks for sharing the hack.
All my bigger machines are bought used as well. It's quite satisfying to restore machines
Good information, Jonathan! Thanks for sharing!
Hello young man. About vinegar. Here in Scotland we use vinegar and salt to flavour our Fish Supper from the local Fish and Chip Shop (a favourite un the UK after a good night out on the Pi*s (look it up). If that is what it is doing to a drill press, it just show's how hardy wee Scot's people are. As for Jacob S hating you I don't know why. You look like the biggest soft hearted and sensitive human being I have the pleasure to respect in quite a wee while now. Take care BIG MAN.
Cool! Will definitely start using that method. Always have been afraid to use a sander on my equipment.
Just ordered my Katz Moses Dovetail Jig yesterday! Super excited about it coming in.. Now I just need to find an auction so I can score a deal like this!!!
Awesome bud! I can't wait to see what you create!
Good tips. Thanks JKM. I'm looking forward to projects coming from the new shop. Congratulations.
Thanks bud! I really appreciate it!
Yup!...works like a charm....I have a wire brush attachment for my hand drill...helps me get in all those weird places
Very helpful indeed! Cheers
Great tips. Thanks mate
I use a Wagner paint removal disc with an angle grinder. No need for vinegar. For small places there are smaller discs or use a brush like you showed.
Ahh, the 'Summers Eve" treatment as I call it. :)
Always great content. Cheers
Lol thanks bud!
Great tip Jonathan. Any ideas on how to get rid of water marks / stains from cast iron too?
🖐🖐🖐Greetings from Germany🖐🖐🖐
That's fantastic!
Thank you for this idea. 🙂👍
Good ideas
Really nice video. A less complicated how to than many other methods:" electricity, anode, cathode, you know the drill.
A battery charger, a bucket, some WASHing soda, and some wire. You can throw a bunch of parts, tools, etc in it and they'll be rust free the next day. Probably less that $0.05 worth of electricity used. Ain't exactly rocket science.
That rocks. Seems very similar to my method, except I use a different chemical, and tend to chuck up a wire brush in the hand drill instead of using a hand-brush. On the other hand, I tend to hand sand with a sanding block instead of power sanding, so I guess it evens out time wise.
Another option for those worried about sandpaper are the Scotch-Brite scrub pads. They stick well enough to your orbital sander. Another product I use instead of vinegar is WD-40. - Chris
Great advice!
Great video! This method has been really effective for me as well, though I sometimes use a scotch-brite pad on my sander. I've also had good luck lately using Evapo-Rust. It's easier to use on small parts and seems to be a bit less aggressive than vinegar. You can use it for table tops as well, but have to soak paper towels with it and leave them on for at least an hour.
Evapo-Rust IS less harsh because it is not an acid like vinegar. Vinegar dissolves not only the rust, but also eats into the base metal. Evapo-Rust only creates a chemical reaction with iron oxide FEO2 (rust). It does not react with the base metal. There may still be pitting from the rust if it was deep.
Thanks Jonathan. Two questions of I may ask...
1) I bought a jointer the other day with a bit of rust, the person advised using WD-40 for rust removal. Any disadvantages with WD-40 over Vinegar?
2) I got an older Craftsmans bandsaw and the table is aluminum, what is the best way to clean that?
Thanks, love your videos.
They both work. Cheers!
@@katzmosestools I'll go with the vinegar then so I can use my wife's stuff and not mine ;-).
Need to try that wax. Thanks Katz and unlike "J "I like your videos. Do you think he actually clicked twice or even get the punt lol
Hahahaha lol who knows. He posts something like that everytime I post a video
Easy peasy. I use a different solvent. I prefer something with less odor, although vinegar is cheap and readily available.
What do you use?
Jonathan Katz-Moses I use a product called Krud Kutter. tinyurl.com/y9gqfb2z
Citric acid works the same, and you can buy it really cheap as a powder in large bags on Amazon. I’ve been on my first bag for a decade or so.

Welcome bud!
Love the videos. I noticed your small right angle square you carry in your apron, but don't see it in your list of tools. Can you, or anyone, tell me where to find it? Brand? -Thanks and keep up the good work:)
Check out the apron video I did at the beginning of 2018
Sorry, I meant the flat right angle mini framing square you carry in your top pocket on your chest...
Where do you find these tool auctions? The ones I find in Houston only have worn out tools! Thanks, Dave
I put a link in the description
@@katzmosestools where is the link? I'm not finding it.
Hey Jonathan, quick question for you:
I just bought a used delta unisaw off a guy in town. I’m convinced it was never used (stellar condition), but the table top is rusted over cause we live in humid houston. My only concern with this technique is that it’s going to drip down into cabinet and get onto the arbor and stuff inside. Is that something to be concerned about or do you think it’s okay?
Just oil everything. Shouldn't be a problem because nothing rusts like cast iron
Jonathan Katz-Moses awesome, thanks!
What is your next purchase on your list? Nicely done!
Laser cnc!
What's in that holster looking thing on your front?
A holster for a 6" combo square
Does it mainly work on surface rust?
All rust
I know you are gearing up in the new shop, but are you going to continue the joint of the week segment?
Of course. As soon as I have a place to work. Takes a while to set up a shop.
@@katzmosestools awesome. I love that segment. I know it takes a while to get a shop set up. I've been putting mine together for 5 years now, and you are setting one up for multiple makers. You may have said it already but are you going to do youth classes out of the new shop?
I like to chuck up a wire brush in my drill and pretend I'm Buck Rogers zapping the evil alien Rustoids.
That's a great idea!
👍👍💜😎💯👊
Am i the only one who tought this was about building removal in the Rust videogame?
Legit question. Why not just paint the tabletop and base? Assuming you'll make a drill press table for it anyway.
Benefit being you can use corroseal a to turn the rust into a primer
What happens if you let the vinegar dry?
a while back The Post Apocalyptic Inventor did a rust removal video using citric acid, really aimed at parts you could take off and stick in a bucket though. Worth a watch. ua-cam.com/video/jqN5zY_T2Kc/v-deo.html
but your table is gonna be .0000000001 of an inch off.
Hahaha
I'll take "How to remove rust" for 1000 Art. I'm showing my age because the first host of Jeopardy! was Art Fleming.
Hahahaha
