  • In spite of its flaws, bugs, and quirks - Baldur's Gate 3 is without a doubt easily one of the most important titles of the last 5 years, and is hopefully part of a renaissance in gaming amidst the never ending low effort and "games as a service" trend in the industry.

    Normally my default pinned post is to ask people what other games they'd like to see explored, since the viewers are usually pretty positive (it's still buried in normal comments, or you can post suggestions here) - but there are a lot of new faces here, and the vocal minority have prompted a note here, that is unfortunately necessary:
    You are welcome to your opinions, and we are free to disagree on them - but bigotry is not welcome in my comment section. If that bothers you, there are plenty of other channels that you can participate on that will either ignore it, or in some cases even condone it, but not this one. I do not desire my channel to be a platform for hate speech or demeaning speech about people due to their race, identity, orientation, or nation of origin. If I see it, I will remove it, and potentially you, from the comment section - consider this a first, and last, warning.

    I think Raphael's path makes perfect logical sense in the context of the in game world. In D&D Devils will try to trick you into taking their deals, but all their deals are heavily leaned onto the Devil's side of the bargain even if it doesn't seem like it. Once you've made the deal you're bound to it, that's just the way it goes. He knows you're on the path to suceeding and decides to make it easier for you but with consequences you wouldn't understand yet.
    I think Wyll's backstory perfectly shows what making a deal with the Devil means in BG3.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  8 місяців тому +3

      Raphael, if you do the first parts how they intended do make sense - the problem is, if you try to sell him your soul at the beginning, he'll refuse it (even though he pursued you) - the contract could've included his desire for [big spoiler] and either had you continue with that looming from the start, or could have just been an instant game-over by accepting (we already had instances of instant game over before that in the crashed nautiloid)

    • @digital-underworld
      @digital-underworld 8 місяців тому +8

      That's where I think the greater play is though. He tells you straight up that he's always an option later on so you're already considering his deal. Now the temptation is there, you don't want to turn into one of those squids after all.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  8 місяців тому +6

      It's kind of like if a used car salesman came up and said, "I have this Ford Dumpsterfire for $5000, it'll get you where you need to go" - and you said, "yes, sounds like a deal" - then the used car salesman proceeded to say, "well, you won't find a better deal, I'll be here waiting when you change your mind."

    I actually like the fact that companions are reserved and distant at first and only join you because of the common cause of having been abducted and infected by the Illithid. It's simply too uncanny when RPGs have people you've never met sing your praises and reveal all their secrets within 10 minutes of knowing them and it makes them feel much more like videogame NPCs.
    Plus, getting them to open up or completely change their attitude towards you like Lae'Zael who ends up being one of your closest and most trustworthy companions feels so much more rewarding and like character development. It feels like the BG3 companions exist alongside you whereas most games make companions feel like they exist solely because and for you

      @GobaGNon 8 місяців тому +14

      @@AlzorathI suppose I just don’t quite get it then, why do you expect that they would be anything other than openly hostile? Lae’zel thinks you’re turning into a mind-flayer, shadowheart is clearly on a secret mission and tells you outright on several occasions she can’t trust anyone, and Astarion saw you on the ship and thought you were on the mind-flayer side. Other than that you get treated with relatively friendly indifference by Wyll, Gale is friendly, Karlach is ECSTATIC to be your friend, and the other companions are similarly pretty open to you from there. I feel like you made the emotional decision that the party members were hostile to you, and then worked backwards from there without there being a necessarily logical throughline to that point of view.

    • @kitwood4610
      @kitwood4610 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Alzorath Not sure I would agree with most coming under this. While you need to build trust with all of them, there is only one who is obviously very hostile (Lae'zel) while one more is a bit edgy (Shadowheart) but she quickly drops that act with the right interactions whereas Lae'zel takes a bit more work to come around. The rest are pretty friendly from the get go.

    I really felt the romance criticism. Accidentally got into a romance "path" with Gale while trying to develop a deep bromance and had to hurt his feelings in a shattering way to get out of it. In general, the characters approach you way too easily and rejecting them is often done in a very tone-deaf way, making me feel bad as a player. I also felt like the game struggled a bit with emotional scenes, I rarely had "teary-eyed moments" in this game or was super hyped etc.. Definitely room for improvement there. But in general, the game is fantastic! Very fair and in-depth review :).

    Cool it Gale! Were talking shop, not stress relief!

    It's very interesting to see other people's indepth takes on their experience. Especially Act 3. It's definitely not as tight as Act 1 in terms of performance and eloquence, but the crescendo of Act 1 and 2 into the climax that is Act 3, I think is incredible. I haven't finished Act 3 yet but I do see what you're saying regarding the boss fights (Ketheric vs Orin). The Ketheric fight, chase and final fight was a tier or two above the Orin fight, which I did find underwhelming. I actually think the game overall is a little too easy on Tactician, especially as your characters get stronger, it becomes more evident. Not much of a mod user but I think I will end up using some mods to up the difficulty.

But the companions, interactions with the player that you miss is too much. Companion reactivity, their progress is one of the strongest parts of the game in my opinion. I actually don't get how people may not like.them. they're not bubbly or happy but they are interesting, which from my perspective is much, much more important. You can get more sneak attacks through reaction attacks.
    If you're new to dnd just give Asterian the Sentinel feat, lock him in melee with a buddy, even familiars work. Lastly, you can have battle masters use commanding strike on him. Meaning a correctly built team with Asterian and a custom rogue can devastate bosses, but struggle with many creatures.
    That said you can solo Raphael, easily one of the hardest fights in the game with a single rogue being smart, or a geared fighter that knows how to use bows correctly. The later capable of litterally killing everything in the room in a couple turns. Where as the rogue is very, "lols, you so slow" but takes time to chip down all the enemies.
    Neither of which use the "ohhhh, the fight is in *this* room, let me stack explosives everywhere" solution that has been used to kill the entire goblin or druid camp(at least the area loaded) with a single attack from outside of combat.
    The game is very good. And could be better. But with nearly a decade of effort to get yhe product it is unlikely to be reproduced frequently. But if Larian have tuned the game correctly, you could have player created "expansions" that dwarf the original game.

      Those alerts are not actual points of no return though - there is literally one major quest impacted by crossing those alerts (there's 3 spots that trigger those btw). The real point of no return (ie where you can't go back and do any of the side quests from the "act 1" zone) is a fair bit deeper into act 2 and doesn't have an alert. You either discover it via a later alert, or you discover it by trying to backtrack after a specific trigger.

    • @noctoi

      @@Alzorath You get an alert when entering the areas that kill other quests if you keep going, then you get an achievement when you go through the second point (the loading screen for the Shadow Lands). Yes you can cross back over, but your main quest changes after interacting with NPC's and events past those points. They aren't points of no return for movement, but for quest progression. Saying there's 'no warning' for Act two is simply untrue. To be clear the warning before leaving to go to mountain pass is indeed a point of no return. It's not as impactful as the one encountered further in act 2, which you are also warned about before proceeding, but it will resolve a number of quests that could have game-long implications if you did not resolve them yourself. While you will be able to return to the region and engage in some stuff you may have missed, you may shut out of an important subregion completely if you did not finish the quests there.
    If you've made it far enough through the first area to be told that there are 2 paths to the Shadowlands, I could see how it could be confusing as you have likely progressed enough in the region to have already completed the quests that you'd be locked out of, but you can easily gain access to mountain pass by passing a speech check and without the warning it could have a dramatic impact on a player's game.

    This is a legitimately great game, in my opinion. First playthrough, I took a Paladin through a campaign, gleefully smiting evil with wrathful vengeance for 118ish hours, and didn't even visit all the playable areas. I'm currently getting off the first act again, playing a Dark Urge warlock. I'm sure I've got a few more playthrough in me. Does the game have some bugs? Sure, but it more than makes up for it with great main and side quest storylines, a lot of cool items, a large variety in the way you van approach most situations and real consequence for the choices you make. So many viable d&d mutliclass builds. My biggest gripe is the level cap. I really wish it had been capped at 14-16 instead. On my first playthrough I was pretty much max level for the majority of the third act. It's probably one of the best overall games I've played in a while and the best part? It hasn't asked me for my credit card once.

      @justhaku9240 Hmm, so I'm not sure if I would be able to pinpoint it exactly, but I took almost all paladin specific dialogue options, some of which lead to fights that might have been a little more difficult. I did just about everything possible in terms of questing, aside from a couple of storyline quests. Without trying to spoil much, I didn't let Shadowheart do the thing and took what I believed was the 'good' route from that point, partially anyways. Helped Dream visitor, had most of the companions unlocked. I'm guessing depending on some choices made, perhaps you may have missed maybe a few quests. I would say that I pretty much hit 12 before I even made it into the lower city. Did use a single specimen and maybe only one to three illithid dialogue options through the game.

Some encounters dont even give any XP (or loot as well) if you decide to "persuade or intimidate" people into leaving the scene. Plus they run away so quick you cannot "DOS2" them and just murder them after you talk to them. Plus why would I want to do that every time? SOOO does ending solutions and dialogue with conversation give a % of XPthat fighting them would give? Who knows? Who has tested this in multiple scenarios? Thanks for your input!

    Spoilers ahead.
    I don't mind a bit of railroading. Even as a DM, you want your party to go certain directions so they keep having fun. Give players too much freedom and they can ruin it for themselves.
    Raphael is a bad example. His early appearances are setup. To make you question if you can trust him. He even says it if you reject his offer. Asks you to exhaust all your options and he'll wait. If you reject the emperor, the hammer is the only thing that can help you and he knows it. When he finally offers you the choice, it offers a massive twist near the end of the game.
    Where BG railroads the most, and I'm perfectly okay with this, is shoving you in the same place for the ending of every act.
    Act 1 is: figure out a cure. And it ends with: You found your way to the shadowcursed lands. Everything in between is optional and only serves to guide you towards that point (railroad).
    Act 2 is: Check out what is going on with moonlight tower, and it always ends with you killing Ketheric. How you discover Ketheric, and kill him, is entirely up to how you play the game, but the entire act serves to guide you towards Ketheric and killing him.
    Act 3 is: You have a netherstones, and you know where the latters two are. How you acquire them is up to you. all the sidequests are optional and only lead you towards options of getting the stones. This act you can also literally just gank Gortash, speedrun towards orin and finish the game. But the first time you play it you gotta figure out where orin is, or how to get to Gortash safely.
    And act 3 always ends with the brain confrontation, no matter what you did.
    Tl;dr to hate on railroading here is stupid. If it was even more free choice, it'd be a sandbox and you'd get nowhere.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  8 місяців тому

      I'm not hating on railroading - I hate on specific instances of railroading where it punishes immersion (Raphael is a big one, since there's literally no way to accept his deal when he first shows up - especially since he's the ONLY option for removing the worm that doesn't have a "let's try it" option - he could very easily been put in a situation like the hag was)

    I grew up on Dungeon and Dragons. I couldn’t wait to be old enohugh to play the pen and paper game. But idk I had a unique DM who ran a very dry low fantasy campaign. There was all of the standard monsters, etc but they were used sparingly. The story was the main character. Nowadays it seems like Devils, dragons, and all sorts of powerful beings and encounters are commonplace. Idk how so feel about that. I would rather a more subtle world I think. I still love BG3 but wish it was a bit more low key. I think if the story started several months before the mindflayers started abducting people where dark rumors were were spreading around and something wicked was being plotted all around you. Then by the end of the game a collection of powerful players were gathered through odd means.
    also, I wish there were a lot more friendly options to just be a close companion rather than a romantic, love, interest like as soon as you start showing interest, and one of your companions just to be nice, even if it isn’t a romantically charged dialogue line. You still start unlocking, romantic responses from your companions right away, even when you were just trying to be cool with them and get to know them better as people and could you imagine how that would be in real life? Like telling one of your male coworkers hey, what’s up dude nice outfit I like those shoes today. Looking pretty sharp bro, then the next thing you know he’s coming onto you.

    I haven't played a whole lot of RPGs lately, and BG3 was totally off my radar for its long run in early access. But, boy, am I glad I bought it. Since my frame of reference is a bit limited WRT recent RPGs, I'll say this: BG3 is kinda like the sequel that Dragon Age: Origins would've deserved but never got (DA 2 felt like such a letdown and I never bothered with DA3 as a consequence). There are, IMO, a ton of similarities between the two titles, both in the story-department as well as in others. Look, feel, UI, breadth/scope, the nature of the threat your party and your world face - to my mind, it's undeniable that DA:O must've been a pretty strong influence on BG3 on some level at least. Of course: With BG3 you're getting the whole D&D-thing on top of everything as a "bonus" along with a strong, albeit long-time "dormant", PC-game franchise of its own. I should probably dig out my vintage CD-ROM copy of Baldur's Gate 1 or buy the enhanced version... :D
    And all of which is a huge compliment, since I think DA:O was one of the absolute best RPGs of the past two decades.
    In any case: While the game still isn't without its technical flaws (small wonder with a title of this size and scope), it seems to be running pretty smoothly for me now. Launcher had given me some serious issues after the Aug 25 patch (PC freezes/BSOD), but disabling the it seems to have remedied that. And yes: Some story/decisions-stuff in game can still be kinda glitchy, but that's just to be expected and doesn't really distract from the otherwise excellent experience. This is one game where the hype and the high player-numbers are totally justified. Personally, I've logged nearly 200 hours since I bought it on Aug 19th, I'm currently on my second play-through (which I started pretty much right after my first) and I do plan on doing a third. The only thing that *kinda* bothers me is actually the romance-system where *everyone* is bi (even Astarion, lol) and all of them wanted to jump into bed with my character all at the same time and for no apparent reason during my first play-through.
