i took massive issue with that guy calling scotland a colony 😭 shame that history is often burried under nationalism (ironically he is arguing the same point as me)
The only one that I know of is the Darien scheme, which was a plan for moving cargo, but other countries in Europe didn't want that to happen, so they failed, costing them a lot of money, and then England bribed the backers and politicians to accept a unification. If you're thinking of any others, there are really only 4 and I'm pretty sure that 3 of them failed, but out of the British Empire's 105 countries, what Scotland did when it was on its own was not that bad, and Britain was really controlled by England.
@@balsosnell2064 scottish people love playing the victim and blame England for everything. The scottish started the union and were willing participants.
@lemonfellow4703 well it dosent English historians just don't mention the part where James dad was English and he was a massive Anglophile who hated his French and Scottish mother The man never returned to Scotland after becoming king of England nor did his descendants for 100 years
For a Scot to state that Scotland is a "colony" after their king moved south to become King of England too, hence the name "United Kingdom" is so ignorant. Never mind that Scots were overwhelmingly involved in British colonialist projects and empire building. Me thinks somebody wants to be a victim and not take any responsibility.
You killed off all your close royals during two centuries of civil war, and needed a more distant one, in James. A man who grew up in France, and ditched Scotland at the nearest convenience. The British Empire was the English empire until the union in 1707. Before the UK existed, England was already in the Americas, Africa and Ireland.
@@OneTrueScotsman True, but the English weren't in Scotland, Scotland was never colonized by the English. In fact, the Scots were out colonizing all on their own in pre-Union Scottish colonies like Nova Scotia, Stuart's Town and most disastrously, the Darien Scheme. Post-Union, those Scottish colonies merged with English colonies to become British colonies. Scholars generally agree that British empire-building truly accelerated in the early 1800s, at which point Scots were incredibly influential in shaping and running the Empire, through men such as John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, Henry Dundas, and David Livingstone, alongside the heavy Scottish presence in the East India Company. As I said, me thinks somebody wants to be a victim and not take any responsibility. Or is just an ignorant fool.

Every country has them. You should see how many noodle-heads we have over here in Australia. Good luck to all the good mfs out there dealing with them. Wherever you are.😊
It’s a lack of real pride and trying to hide the nasty side of history. The British Empire (not English, British) wouldn’t have been as successful if it wasn’t for Scottish inventions, there’s a reason Scottish cities are full of nice merchant houses as they were great with commerce, and the Scottish regiments were (still are!) some of the best fighting forces in the British army. Add to that the Ulster Scots turning out the Irish, the amount of Scottish place names around the globe because they were out surveying and exploring (Australia is full of Macquarie points and Stewart Passages). There’s been some terrible acts done against the poor of Scotland but a country can’t keep claiming to be a victim when they were out there doing the same to other countries. I don’t like rewriting history, it’s not good vs bad, it’s much more complex
Britain is the entire islands includes UK and republic of Ireland. So Irish are British. Scots are British. The English are British.. stupid question. .
As an Indian, I don’t know much about this topic (nor is there any reason for me to get involved - I don’t even know why this video was recommended to me), however w.r.t. the Scottish gentleman saying that Scotland was treated like India, or any other colony: Scots were disproportionately employed by the British/English in the civil services. They played a huge role in oppressing the colonised people of India etc. You’d be surprised to see how many ‘hill stations’ and other places there are in India that are named after a Scottish person (hint: we didn’t do it willingly). So while Scotland may have also been ‘colonised’, we are not the same bro lol
The English were well versed in using those from the places they colonised/ethnically cleansed as servants of Empire - many who simply died as cannon fodder doing so. The English did it in India, Africa and the Americas - lets not kid ourselves on this. The officer and genrty class being dominated by the wealthy of English origin regardless that they had taken lands elsewhere. The same class of colonisers - weren't above claiming the nationality of the places they colonised when it suited them - see Ireland for details
@tick999 Recent genetic and archaeological research show that the population of north eastern Ireland and north eastern Britain are descended from peoples who were one and the same from ancient times. The first mention of the term Scotti was by the Romans in the fourth century, but there was no tribal group with that name listed in any of the classical sources - the name appears to be one assigned by the Romans to various tribal groups from the coastal and island regions covering both northern Britain and Ireland. Specifically Romans note that Britons, Saxons, Picts and Scotti were raiding Roman settlements on the island of Britain. The Romans dont say where the Scotti come from btw but do say they made joint raids with the Picts. Fast forward to the ninth century and the Scotti and Picts are living side by side with various pictish and scotti kings being related and ruling over the other. In 939 a series of disastrous viking raids resulted in the deaths of both the King of the Picts and the King of the Scotti - who eventually merge as the Kingdom of Alba under King Kenneth McAlpin. The rest is history
@tick999 Yeah recent fine scale DNA research shows similar population stretching across the coastal and island regions of what is north eastern Ireland and parts of north western Britain - with the entire population of both islands speaking various celtic languages before the arrival of the various germanic tribal groups from the fifth century onwards. . It makes sense especially since the region is only 12 miles apart by sea and rationally there is no reason why Bronze and Iron age peoples moved freely throughout the region at a time when there was no nation states. The whole dynastic Dál Riata thing appears much later with a lot of it only written down by Christian monks many centuries after the events were supposed to have taken place. You are correct with regard to various migratory movements between the island of Ireland and the island of Britain in ancient times. There are a number of tribal groups with the same names on both islands recorded in classical sources. That said I wouldn't count migratory movements of tribal groups back then as colonisation or at least not the state orchrastrated invasion and colonisation as occured in the recent colonial era - with Britain France and Spain snapping up most of the world primarily for wealth and power. Which was simply the way things developed for both bad and good including the industrialisation of the slave trade and that then being eventually abolished in the 19th century
@tick999 Look at "The genetic landscape of Scotland and the Isles research published online - specifically the Argyll cluster (synonymous with the semi historical region referred to Dál Riata) which shows a common ancestry across northern parts of Scotland and Ireland.

When people ask where I'm from I'm going to say Scotland. If Scottish is an option I'm going to pick that. I am British insofar as I was born on this island and it shows that on my passport but that's as far as my connection to that label goes. I wish more people would just be sensible about whatever national identity they want to align with. As when it comes to our history as a country in general we have a shocking record. However, we can continue to move things forward and make progress.

The term "British" originates from Roman times were they called all celtic tribes by the name of one, the Britons. Therefore, in its original context, the name refers exclusively to celts, specifically the Brythonic celts now in Wales and Cornwall. The name would not refer to the English as they are Germanic, not celts. In its modern context, the term just means anybody from the island of Great Britain, which includes Scotland, Wales and England
The Roman historian Tacitus names the people living above the solway firth (Scotland) as the Britons of Caledonia. That was written in the first century AD. That’s before anglo settlement. Anyway, Scotland is itself a largely English country - the Scots language is literally old Northumbrian English. “Auld” meaning old etc. Scots people (of which I am one) are descended from Anglo kingdoms like Northumbria.

The English are British.. stupid question. .
As an Indian, I don’t know much about this topic (nor is there any reason for me to get involved - I don’t even know why this video was recommended to me), however w.r.t. the Scottish gentleman saying that Scotland was treated like India, or any other colony:
Scots were disproportionately employed by the British/English in the civil services.

They have been doing well for a few decades now, despite those who told them their 'little country' will collapse and come back into the fold begging. That never happened. What happened is that many in the UK started searching for an immediate Irish ancestor to claim Irish/EU nationality after the effing Referendum. The Scots voted overwhelmingly to Remain only to be dragged out of the EU by clowns like Fartage and Johnson.

As a Zimbabwean of British stock with strong roots from Scotland, I am proud of my British stock and heritage. One thing Scots must understand is the fact that were the builders of the British Empire. One in three of all British soldiers, settlers, governors, administrators, settlers and pioneers were Scotsmen. Especially here in Rhodesia ( today Zimbabwe ).
I will say I am Scottish not British and not "proud" of the UK, it is an embarrassment. People talk about the history, I say while lessons can be learned from the past look at the present and try to tell me there is a good future for Scotland or the UK ahead and I will call you a delusional fool. Reality is what it is and teh UK is in the middle of one of it's darkest periods in a long time and I don't see anyway out other than to just ride it out and hope for the best. Nothing but fools in power now on ALL sides.

Scottish people failing to realise that Scotland being British is completely geographical, not political. Even if they left the union, they'd still be British. Why? Because Scotland is geographically located on the BRITISH Isles.
They mean it politically. They'd probably be happy enough to be British once independent
I highly doubt the Irish would say they are British.
Scotland geographically is Scottish nothing else, its a country to its own people.culture tradition ways clothing like the kilt full regalia.PART OF AN ISLAND WHERE SCOTS ENGLISH WELSH CO EXIST, BUT ALL HAVE SEPERATE IDENTITYS SUCH AS ACCENT.THERE IS DEFINATELY A DIVIDE BETWEEN THESE COUNTRIES.
Except that "Britain" is used mostly in political, social and cultural terms. Something that many Scots like myself don't see ourselves in. It also carries with it assumptions and connotations that I don't want mistakenly applied to me. It's been used in arguments to argue against Scottish independence because, for some bizarre reason, "we're all family" because we are all "British", then in that case, i'm not British. I don't feel any sort of family bond with people in the rest of Britain just because of their proximity to Scotland.
I was Welsh British up until 2016. Then Britain died as English exceptionalism took centre stage. I will never refer to myself as British again

K, bye 😂👍
I'm a very Scottish person living in England. I have lived all over the UK. Wales is amazing! I love England and have lived all over England and it's beautiful but very insular and self important. Having a world view and open mind is a Scottish culture ideal. Westminster is its own BS and London is its own Island. The Gov is a paracite on Wales NI and Scotland. Anyone who has actually lived all over the UK without any biases can see it. Wales has been failed. NI has been abused. Scotland has been the stripped and beaten repeatedly. England has been lied to and manipulated into nostalgic fantasy that Churchill was a hero and Brexit was a great idea. They have been told they are the biggest part of the majority of the 'Union'. They can't actually see it or don't want too then get upset when its pointed out and wonder why the others are upset. It's not a union. Just a fact.
As a Jamaican - proud to be Jamaican but Proud to British... these people dont care what it took to build this place and the sacrifices made. We as adults have a child mindset about life.
I'm not a hardline indie supporter but I agree with some of the sentiment here. I think that national identities are mostly subjective, and that people are the ones that assign meaning to it. Having a sense of pride in where you come from is often combined with ridiculous bigotry and toxicity. I think this goes for people who align with either Scottish or British but in my experience the virtriol has come from people that align with "British" more often.
I agree, we'll said. And honestly, people bringing up the past like colonisation is pretty redundant no matter which country we're talking about. Every nation has done bad things in the past, what's the point in making it a basis of argument now
I agree with you. I am not a nationalist outside of supporting Scotland's return to being a nation state. I don't think I'm better than anyone else for being Scottish, but I strongly believe that all key decisions should be made in Scotland, by people the country voted for. Not our neighbours.

I was always told by my family that a Red Dragon is in the centre of the Union flag , you cannot see it ! Seriously I would like to see the quartered Royal Shield loose a set of lions and have a red dragon instead.
Wales is not represented because Wales was totally a part of England as of the time the union happened in 1707. It was a union between England (which had Wales in it) and Scotland and later between Britain and Ireland in 1801. So this current flag has been used since 1801.
That’s because Wales was a principality of England until 1967. The current flag of the UK was created in 1801, your representation on the flag comes by way of the cross of St George 🏴.

British is just an Anglo-imperialist phrase. British equates to English. Scottish not British.
Isn't Brittany in France. Sounds like we were colonised.

Which encompassed the lowlands and included the Scottish capital Edinburgh. That’s why Scottish administrative divisions are called “shires” like they are in the English Home Counties.
@willmc9612 The Angles Saxons Freisans and Jutes didn't arrive in Britain until the fifth century followed by the Danes and Normans. In the centuries afterwards much of the island of Britain was overrun by these invaders with the native tribes increasingly pushed to the north and western papers of the island. It's best not to conflate the two tbf. Btw Scotland was never an "English" country
