Junghans Max Bill vs. Sternglas Naos | Can you Bauhaus on a Budget?

  • The Junghans Max Bill has been a staple of my collection for years because of it's iconic design and timeless charm. I first noticed Sternglas on kickstarter and thought the Naos was a striking modern Bauhaus interpretation. So here I put the two side by side.
Obviously price no object, the Max Bill takes the cake every time. However at 1/2 to 1/3 the price, the question is: Does the Naos capture that Bauhaus magic?

Btw, for me personally, the Junghans Max Bill is the overall winner (since it’s the original Bauhaus watch). But kudos to Sternglas for making a well-done modern interpretation at an affordable price. 👍🏼

The Sternglas Naos is my office beater since around 4-5 years. It is really a nice classic watch and fits perfectly to business or dress styles. The quality is good and the leather is very nice and soft. After probably over 500 days of wearing it, it has not a single visible scratch on the glas and only minor scratches on the body. Love it!

Thanks for this informative and highly enjoyable video into the Bauhaus school of design.I have just purchased a Junghans Max Bill watch due in part to your presentation of the watch. I have been tangentially aware of Junghans for years but never fully investigated it until recently. I agree with you that it does reveal its charm to one slowly. Once it does it blossoms into a full blown love affair. At least in my case. Thanks again for your quality videos.

Thanks man for the video! I own a Max Bill too, and was looking at Sternglas the other day. I think it's a nice watch and it obviously is inspired by Junghans. In comparison with Junkers, Sternglas did not try to copy but rather went further and "modernised" the Bauhaus watch. However, I won't ever switch from my Max Bill to Sternglas or even to a super cool Nomos.
Thanks again for your video! Well done, and looking forward to more content!

    • @WatchCrunchOfficial

My interest in Sternglas brought me to this video several months ago, and after several repeat viewings since, I've decided to instead save and purchase a Junghans Max Bill. The Naos certainly opened the door for the Bauhaus segment (which your video introduces and summarizes brilliantly) but once you've seen true refinement, it's hard to choose otherwise.

There is also a hand wound version of the Junghans. It’s bit smaller, but nice as a dress watch. Caliber ETA 2801-2 is inside. It’s around £600 at the moment. Prices seem to have gone up. Quite nice with a black dial. -While they did design sans serif typefaces at the Bauhaus, this one is reminiscent of a draughtsman’s writing on a technical drawing. The rounded stroke terminals are typical for the type of nib they used.
Sans serif fonts as such appeared around 1806 and were the work of signpainters. These letters were later adopted by type designers and subsequently used in wood type printing on posters. They came in handy for that new thing called advertising.

I really appreciate the detail of this video. The comparison is detailed and unbiased. As far as the two brands are concerned, I can appreciate the more affordable Sternglas. It is a proper entry into the watch world for beginners. I am however thinking it could be dubbed as a homage piece to watches like Junghans and Nomos.
The Junghans is beautiful and near flawless with the its build quality and deep rich Bauhaus history. The only flaw in my opion on the Junghans is that the earlier models have the plexi-glass cover. I know the later models have saphire crystal offering.
So my verdict would be to save and purchase the more detailed refined Junghans

Great video! Subscribed! For me, I would throw a third contender in this comparison, the Junghans Max Bill Quartz. At somewhere between $250-$500, you get much of the charm of the Max Bill (acrylic crystal, classic max bill dial, and case shape) with an even thinner case under 10mm. The Sternglas Naos definitely nails the bauhaus design, but it lacks what I appreciate the most from the Max Bill which is the beautiful acrylic domed crystal and the thin case. Love the comparison, thanks for sharing.

Saw this vid and spent 20 minutes looking for that watch (found it), as I loved the simplicity of the design. I’d classify it under the Bauhaus design philosophy. Something I’d never heard of until two days ago. 🙄. Lastly, glad that sculpture park isn’t in So Cali as it unfortunately would be covered with graffiti. Cheers from LA.

On Chrono24 there are several dealers selling this watch with sapphire glass (for €900-€1000). Apparently Junghans offers a sapphire glass variant of this watch. It’s just that the plexiglass one is the one that’s shipped to retailers. The sapphire glass one needs to be custom-ordered from the Junghans factory.

Thanks and welcome to the channel. I believe the Lilienthal is a quartz? I hate changing batteries so I prefer mechanical

Nice video. I'm obsessed with the Junghans' design and I'm trying to figure out if it's the right time to buy. It's such a beautiful, understated watch. (I'll enter! #strapme)

Nice video. Come to Tel Aviv and check out its plethora of beautiful Bauhaus architecture!

I bought the Max Bill Quartz a month ago, and after watching your video went on to purchase the Naos too. Both superb watches. The Max Bill has lost one second in the month I've had it. How accurate is that? And I've put a blue strap on the Naos which perfectly matches the hands. Looks absolutely stunning. Great vid.

Good stuff, you got yourself a Bauhaus duo. The Naos seems to have evolved a bit since the kick starter version. Nice to see they are refining it over time!

@@WatchCrunchOfficial as beautiful as the Max Bill is, I'm tending to wear the Naos more often. The dark blue hands really stand out, just a glance is all that's needed to confirm the time. I prefer the Junghans face though.......decisions, decisions. Both definite keepers though. Love 'em.
