Back when you could make a movie like that and it was purely up to the public if they wanted to see it or not. No Twitter campaign, no lash back on Facebook or Instagram. Just, here’s Caligula, it has this, this and this in it. The reviewer may or may not like it but it’s up to you to decide. Notwithstanding the occasional evangelical protestors outside...lol
Well... it did got banned or sanitized, also the director added real pornscenes with pornactors in post production secretly so.... so the film did endure some controversy but lets say the director pushed the envelope even for the seventies ;-)
What's more shocking than her saying this back then is that To This Day, Dame Helen Mirren has claimed no regret in taking part in the film, and STILL defends it. Good on her...
I don't blame her. the film itself and the set was intended to be great, however because of the many disagreements between crew (Tinto Brass, Gore Vidal, etc) along with the interference of Bob Guccione, it never reached it's true intended outcome and potential. in theory it's a great film, but they didn't carry it out propery with the footage. They are however, doing a project where they recovered all 90+ hours of caligula footage and are repiecing and editing it to how the original script and vision intended.
I have not seen the whole movie, but what I saw in these several episodes looks and sounds disgusting, wicked, perverted and terrible!!! Surely our God will judge all real characters who lived then and all those producers, actors and other participants in those evil demonic pictures, scenes!!! And shame on actor Peter O'Toole playing there after playing several years before wonderful role of Angel of God in movie "The Bible. In the Beginning." He surely already is giving account to God!
