    I've spent 25 years in the paddock in US and Europe and aee roadrace mechanics just "slap it together". Following the tips from this video will give rookie team mechanic a quick leg up and consistent performance out of the clutch.

    Best, most informative video about Clutches that I've ever seen. Great job guys 👍
    I can only add that if you see those little high-spots on a steel plate, you will almost always see little grooves around the fiber plate right where the high spot is on the steel plate and conversely, if you see a little groove in a fiber plate. look closely at the steel plate and you'll more than likely see a high spot on the steel that matches where the groove is on the fiber...

    Thanks Brock, you style was perfect for me. The parts of the video needing time to explain were given the time they needed and the same is true of the parts that where simple or repetitive. You had my attention for the entire 50 minutes.

    I couldn't believe this video was almost an hour long. I was so into the entire thing that I didn't even notice until you said something. Every detail of the clutch system was discussed. I felt like I was in a tech class for motorcycles. Almost tried to raise my hand. 😂 Many thanks for posting this video. I realized instantly what my problem was and still watched the rest. Enjoyed the educational experience in all of its entirety. Look forward to next class. Thanks again for taking the time.

    This is why Brock is the best, I've been building bikes and cars to race for nearly 20 years and I still learn vital tips and tricks from watching Brock's videos. The fact its all provided free of charge is brilliant but it's also an insight into why the Brocks Performance products are so damn good and deliver the winning results on the track and street.

    Today is the end of my 1st year of drag racing. I’ve made a point to take out time to thank those who knowing or unknowingly assisted me. I purchased my alien head 2 full system almost 2 years ago from your website & slowly piece by piece attempted to follow your stock to Brock’s for my 2015 zx-14r. Like most rookies I’ve failed a lot but I kept regrouping. Your video on clutch
    maintenance helped me find a problem that has bothered me all year.
    Clutch basket had slack it cause a break in my inner basket & broke my shift selector multiple times. I repaired the basket & made progress on my stock motor thanks keep up the good work!
    Your Clutch mod & springs gave my bike the ability to hold mph.

      @Terrance Sampson - thank you for the kind words. Drag racing is exciting/fun/challenging - but it can also be very frustrating when 'hidden' problems hamper progress. Your appreciation is exactly why we take the time to produce these vids. Good luck, be safe, GO FAST!

      Brock Davidson Hi Brock, I have been having a problem with my 2018 GSXR 750’s clutch. It seems to be knocking when trying to get moving from a stand still. It tends to do it once the oil is warmed up. I have checked the sprockets and chain and they seem to check out alright. Here is a video of what happens. ua-cam.com/video/vs6GRp31eOM/v-deo.html I would greatly appreciate it if you can diagnose that as the dealer I bought it from isnt much help. Thanks.

    I would usually replace my whole clutch with the kit provided. This next time around I'm going to stretch this clutch kit out by replacing only what's bad. I really never gave it a second thought about scrutinizing each plate and fiber.

  • @Majorvideonut2

    Save the new clutch as long as possible. The word is going around that it is no problem to let your clutch hang between engaged and disengaged... the clutch was never meant to be between these positions. In fact, it is made to transfer energy from the engine to the drive wheel smoothly and that puts enough wear and tear on it without deliberately dragging the clutch... which is called burning the clutch. If you know of a long light that you have going to work it is best to shift to neutral and sit which puts no wear on the clutch. I have noticed that MSF and the Police Rodeo are advocating to drag your clutch (burn) to get a slower movement... this will tare up clutch plates. When the clutch goes out in the mountains it will not be a fun ride.

    Replaced the clutch on an old Kawasaki KZ750 years back and I tried to torque those spring loaded bolts down and ended up ripping the head off one of them, it wasn't a new bike and I freaked out that I wouldn't be able to get the right bolt again or even remove the rest of it but got lucky and a friend had an old 400 or 450 from the same generation laying around gathering rust. definitely a learning experience.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  3 роки тому

      I think we have all been there? I used to think the OEM's used soft/shitty clutch bolts on purpose...now I know the heat generated in the clutch area anneals the bolts and makes them soft. That's why all of our clutch bolts are grade 8 out of the package.

    I got a 08 zx10r I appreciate the detail that you went into just for all of us. I'm doing my clutch for the first time, I think I may have cooked my clutch that was im sure in need of being replaced after the first season of riding. I have some mild gruving in my clutch basket. Ran finger over it and I can't feel the spots so I think that's alright. I'm just not familiar with clutch fiber plates and the sharp edged steel plates. Not sure if it's relevant but my steel plates don't feel very sharp on the outer edges or along the contact spots for the fiber plates. If you or anyone else has some insight it would be greatly appreciated

    I watched the video helping me to do the oil pump upgrade. Where you spin the clutch pack freely. Mine does not. I took everything off and just put the inner hub on and it still drags us there anything I’m missing. It is in neutral. I can get it to shift into first and neutral that’s it. It will not go into 2nd or any higher gear.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  4 роки тому +1

      Some drag is normal as you are spinning the input shaft and associated transmission gears. The Kaws won't let you shift into 2nd and above unless the bike is moving (Kawasaki positive neutral finder) .. So that's normal also.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  4 роки тому +1

      @H2 Beast Mode - also, the clutch steels and frictions are not installed in my demo. The effort required to spin the inner hub is considerably more difficult when they are installed.

      Brock Davidson I assumed that. I did messaged you on Facebook with a video of it. I show it in the basket and out of the basket. I don’t have my rear stand under my bike I have it resetting on my kickstand I’m not sure if that makes a difference. I can’t see anything wrong with it unless I bent the shaft some how when trying to torque the main nut on it.

    That was a top tier video. Thanks.
    It is surprising how similar the clutch is to a automatic transmission setup, I expected it to be something different.
    I enjoyed watching your thorough inspection techniques. That is probably the most important aspect of being a competent dyi builder/racer. It is an art to be able to see and understand the clues of what is happening inside the machine.. it will tell you what is wrong if you can spot the signs.

    How do you adjust the clutch free play and actual adjustments for engagement/ disengagement with a Hydraulic clutch on a zx14r. No one seems to talk about this. I know new fibers that are oiled will swell and can cause creep. Dry hops will wear them back to normal height, but you need to adjust the clutch engagement/disengagement. On a normal clutch with a cable I know how to do that. This is my first Hydro clutch and understand how it works in principal. The master cylinder send hydro pressure to a slave cylinder that moves a puck and this pulls the hat in and let’s the plates slip past each other.
    where is the actual adjustment for that process of the slave Cylinder.
    On all the stuff I worked on in the past, there is a set screw and lock but in the center of the clutch hat and you break the nut, back off the center set screw, then start turning that in until you have the free play you want in clutch lever and lock down that nut and your done.
    This is a whole different world and I can’t find the info on proper adjustment of the hydro clutch engagement/ dis engagement as well as free play in the lever on my 2013 zx-14r.
    I did watch a Ricky Gadson video and he used your stuff with track king fibers and steels. He said that the clutch head/hat should be flush with the fingers of the basket.
    My bike 3,600 original miles is no where near being flush, they must of been riding this bike out of adjustment as the stack height is way thin if that statement is true about fingers to hat being flush.
    Sorry for the long winded post, can I call and speak to you about everything and order some shit to fix my bike properly?

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  2 роки тому

      Hydraulic clutches are self-adjusting (aka, no free play since they don't need it). The engagement is adjusted from the wheel on the clutch lever as well as stack height adjustments via thicker/thinner steels and/or fibers. Ignore comparing your OEM plate situation compared to aftermarket....the reason they are so inexpensive is because they are a generic fitment/not direct OEM replacement and no, they are not flush.

      @@BrockDavidson Thanks so much, I was freaked out that the man burned up my clutch plates. I need to update it anyway. I want to stage race this bike. So I’ll be calling for an order soon.
      On a different subject, can you tell me how to pull codes on a 2013 zx-14r. It doesn’t have that Mode- Reset button like Gen1, and the holding the Select button like a 2017 and up does.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  2 роки тому

      Press and hold the SEL button for more than two seconds - the codes appear on the dash... You will need a service manual to determine code meanings.

    I have a 1998 Kawasaki Voyager XII (1200cc) and have the same clutch slipping problem. To make this comment short I have done the same to the clutch. I replaced the clutch frictions with new generic frictions (paper cork material) and also replaced with new 6 clutch springs (generic). The steel clutch plates are excellent (no hot spots or warpage). Went for a test ride and the clutch still slips while accelerating hard in 4th and 5th gear. I dissembled and shimmed the 6 springs with .091" washers (1 under each spring) to increase spring pressure and that reduced slippage by 85%. My question is should I have installed Kevlar frictions instead of generic paper-cork? Maybe Kawasaki used Kevlar frictions when the bike was new. Your video is great and explains everything you need to know. Thanks Brock.

      @289 Mustang - as a general rule we only use OEM clutch steels and fibers. I'm not saying the aftermarket units won't work, or can't be made to work...I am saying I don't have time to figure out the formula to do it. How are you measuring your slippage? Seat of the pants or dyno?

    • @289mustang8
      @289mustang8 2 роки тому

      @@BrockDavidson Thank You for the quick reply. I'm measuring slippage by the seat of my pants and the Tach. I think later this year I'm going to buy a set of Kevlar frictions. From the info I found "Both Kevlar and Carbon clutch fibers will grip better than OEM." Maybe Kevlar will be the answer. Thanks for the information enjoy your videos.

      @@289mustang8 Careful not to confuse "grip" with "grab". I hate a grabby clutch (never a problem with OEM) aftermarket "marketing" jargin can get confusing, frustrating, and expensive. Before jumping ship on what you have, please also consider that some motor oils (especially "wet clutch approved") can cause slip. If you can add more shims (or aftermarket springs) without coil bind, you can stop all slippage.

    • @289mustang8

      @@BrockDavidson I only rode the cycle for a mile because of weather so the next nice day I will give it another try. I'm using Castrol GTX motor oil which has great lubricating properties. Years ago I had a (used) cycle with a grabby clutch and changed oil to Castrol GTX and that fixed the grabby issue. Maybe my next oil change I could try another brand. I checked for coil bind while adding shims and I'm getting close but could be room to shim a little more. Appreciate all your tips. Thank You.
