In my opinion Mario was the greatest player to ever lace them up. If you swapped him and Gretzky out, and put Lemieux on that Oiler team, Mario would have been getting 250 points a year.

The best ever in my opinion. If he was as protected by the referees as Gretzky, who knows the numbers he would have reached.
"Before th2 start of 2001-02, Pittsburgh was forced to trade most of their expensive players." I never believed this, I always thought it was a plan to improve their chances to get Crosby.

How were the refs protecting Gretzky exactly? If we look at the stats, Pittsburgh had the most powerplays in the league during Wayne's first nine years while Edmonton was 18th out of the 21 teams. The Pens had 454 more powerplays in Mario's first five years than the teams Wayne played for in those years. In Mario's two highest scoring seasons, the Pens had 491 and 500 powerplays. The Oilers had 295 and 341 powerplays in Wayne's two highest scoring seasons. In 85-86 when Wayne had 215 points and Mario had 141 points, the Pens had 130 more powerplays than the Oilers. It seems Mario was the one being protected by the refs, or so the actual facts tell us. The refs tried their best to help Mario beat Wayne, he just wasn't good enough to beat "The Great One".

People compare Gretzky to Lemieux and Gretzky to Orr but I wonder about the Lemieux/Orr similarities.
      * Both won 2 Stanley Cups and 3 Hart Trophies.
      * Both won the Conn Smythe trophy every time they won the Cup.
      * Penguins and Bruins jersey color are quite similar.
      * Both had injury issues that shortened their careers and were constantly playing injured so much we often wonder how much better they could’ve been.
      * Both of them required numerous surgeries.
      * Their injuries were so bad that they sometimes locked up (back, knee)
      * Both were great physical talents.
      * Both were players that even casual fans could see right away were better than everyone (with Gretzky, you had to watch closely.)
      * Both played for teams that were last place either the season before they arrived or during their rookie season.
      * Both players had so much excitement and anticipation before they arrived in the NHL.

@@curtisjoseph7228 Wayne scored the third most points in history in his first year and set the NHL single season points and assists records in his second season. He scored nearly 400 goals as a ten year old. He didn't seek the spotlight, the spotlight was thrust upon him at a very early age. Mario relied too heavily on the powerplay for his points to be considered the greatest.
