    That was great! Nice sketching too! Often in trying to make a modern house Victorian, the volumes of the rooms aren't the same as they used to be. People expect wider spaces, so it's harder to keep it from looking boxy. I've seen some new houses like the example house, here in the Bay area where we have so many Victorians, that people want to emulate. They often look just like a poor attempt, and they don't fit either age in style. Thanks for pointing out how we might avoid those mistakes.

    Your version is transformative!
    It would be interesting to understand what you think the additional expense associated with these details would be. Some details might not have any extra expense or even save on expense (less complicated porte cochere roof line and no stone work) while others would clearly cost more. Let's say it's +$100k... where could money be saved by builder or homeowner to offset? I think that lens could be helpful so that those looking to build with these details can be educated on the best way to do it within certain budget constraints. Maybe it's the square footage, maybe it must be certain interior details. Heck, maybe there just isn't a way at all.
    Anyhow, just a thought. Even if you don't do that, they are still some of my favorite videos!

    I’m an architectural drafter currently, and will be attending school at Mississippi State’s college of architecture… I plan to eventually buy a little land, and building a Victorian home for myself, using actual plans from the Victorian period, not a large home, maybe 1500sqft, but of course tweaking them a bit to abide by modern code and comforts. But overall it will be a Victorian home rebuilt today almost exactly how it was wherever it was originally built

    Really great design ideas! I love Victorian. In my area it's common to see older houses that had been on farms to use stone from the farmland or river bed at the base of the home or columns. So I think the stone work as the base of the columns could be motivated if you are going for a little bit of the pioneer house look. Rather than just extending the roof over that portico, how about giving that a Victorian gazebo look?

We are currently in a 1970's ranch fixer upper. Any chance you could do an episode on "fixing" a ranch? My apologies to anyone that might own this house (as it is) in advance - because it is so ugly to me. That's why I'm loving these videos. I see that house and I hate it - but I only know partially why. Everything Brent drew is so spot on but I just saw - "it's not right" originally. I wish people wouldn't build these they're offensive to the eye. Really. If this was the house you already owned or all that you could buy, I like that nearly all the changes Brent would make could be done in phases to be more budget friendly if necessary. Thank you Brent!

    I agree with these changes. Beautiful. The main obstacle besides the massive price tag in doing all this would be that all the windows, doors, and ornamentation would all have to be custom made, and that means made out of real wood and real wood today is farm raised garbage. So with little access to old growth lumber, everything would have to be made out of either high end rift sawn Douglasfir (at the very least) or quarter sawn white oak to last any length of time on an exterior of a house today. Everything would have to be painted with real oil based paint, not today’s “save the planet” latex paint garbage that will only rot the wood underneath it and last for two years until yet another layer of moisture guarding rubber paint needs to be applied. Then find a craftsman that actually knows how to make Victorian style windows with counter weights, and I would guess search for a real Victorian double door circa 1890. Then have a craftsman know how to mount it and work it into your existing house. Brent I know you make the hundred year window and it looks beautiful but if someone is not in the market to buy it from you who are they going to find to do this type of work? Unfortunately, it’s become a lost skill. It’s fun to watch these transformations, and it’s very educational, but in all honesty today’s materials simply do not allow this type of work to survive, nor does the budget. Can it still be done? Sure, but by a small percentage of people that are willing to actually search out the materials pay the unrealistic prices and most of all find craftsman that actually know how to do any of this work if they are not able and willing to do it themselves. Will it matter much in the neighborhood that this house was built in and serve them on a resale value? No. Most buyers that come to buy a house like this do not want to see real wood that needs to be repainted and maintained. They don’t want to see single pane, wavy glass windows. only people that are buying real Victorian houses in historic neighborhoods want such things. But like I say, it is fun to watch and it is educational.

    That carport looked like it was going to collapse because the overhead stone work was supported on little spindle legs. And the stone work was loose fitted, so it seemed to defy gravity. I liked your fix a lot better, though it still could have used some thicker legs. A contrarian might say you've made the house higher maintenance with all the wood trim - could such details be produced out of concrete board?

    Excellent video. The result does evoke a Victorian villa here in the UK except for that thing on the side; never seen that on a Victorian house; side summer room or conservatory, quite often but not an open structure like they have. A few questions came to my mind.
    Was this house built in the Victorian era and the owners want to take it back to an original look - or do they just want a Victorian look on a newer house?
    What about the interior. In particular , the proportions of the rooms. Are they Victorian? Will the exterior look lead to the interior aesthetic or will it clash?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  Рік тому

      This is a new house, built in the last 10 years, meant to look like a Victorian. Most of these new Victorians are just new houses with "Victorian detailing" Usually, like this one, it is not done well.

    Great ideas, Brent. Garages were never attached to the house but the porte cochere is perfect, I suppose a detached garage/carriage house further back. I would add a weathervane on the turret. Is it ok with Code to lower the porch railing --isn't that dictated?

    • @brette6117
      @brette6117 Рік тому +2

      I keep wondering about this. I agree that the lower railing looks SOOOOoooo much better in every instance Brent uses them, but will you get in trouble with "code" for not using a higher railing? I don't build so I'm only guessing...

    • @jelsner5077
      @jelsner5077 Рік тому +2

      @@brette6117 When I was in my twenties, I rented an upper duplex that was built around 1900. We had a porch that had the original railing: really cute turned balusters. The owners added a plain 2x4 above it at "Code Height," though they did paint it to match. I can't tell you how bad I wanted to knock it out!

    • @JustinPaone1
      @JustinPaone1 Рік тому +3

      The international residential building code only requires 36 inch railings if the walking surface is greater than 30 inches above the grade (measured within 3 feet horizontally of the porch edge.) So if the porch is below 30 inches you can lower railings and still be code compliant. Sometimes jurisdictions alter the code language, but railing language typically is not changed.

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  Рік тому +4

      Justin's comment is correct. If your porch isn't that high off the ground you don't need to raise the hand rail. There are also ways of disguising a rail (to meet code) that offer better solutions. THanks.

    Mostly good... but I have to say the spindle-work valance or frieze on the porch is not quite appropriate for the stick style bay, and the turned porch posts aren't quite right either. You're mashing styles. I think you need to go full-on stick or full-on Queen Anne to get the desired effect. I like the doors, but the arched transom is very wrong. The way the roof of the second floor dips down low above the entrance, only allowing room for two small casements is a very bad idea. Overall, good work.
