The Colonial is far better. Personally, I would leave it alone before I would go to the '60s modern look. My first house as a kid was just like the modern one you drew. It wasn't until we moved to a "real" cape cod style home built in the '20s that it felt like a home.
Interesting. Thanks.
Love the Colonial Revival version, very elegant and classy.
Cool thanks.
I've been waiting for this! Definitely the colonial revival; but I hate modern any way you slice it. Love what you did with the window on the colonial side; that and the round columns did the trick. Do some more of these please and don't forget the inside. Good job as always.
Noted. Thanks.
Agreed. Modern is atrocious. To me it never feels welcoming.
I like them both, they both know what they are. My favorite is the colonial revival though.
Thanks!
Colonial is mint 👌🏾 especially with the little light house thingy at the top lol.. really clean
Thanks so much
Love your stuff man
Thanks so much.
I really enjoyed this. I would like to see more ranch homes. I see a lot of them where I live and wonder how they could be improved, especially because they have such a simplistic look to them.
You and me both! More to come.
I’m so happy you made this one. I can see my next house being a ranch and I was very much hoping for this example. Colonial for sure. I bet the window changes would work for the interior as well. Love it. Please keep them coming
Will Do!
Both of your makeovers are great, as always, but I love the low-slung, casual vibe of a traditional ranch, particularly with good ol' ironwork supports. So many of these MCM homes have been Frankenstein-ed to the point where all the original character is lost, and while I'm not a stick-in-the-mud, I wish more folks would embrace and respect this style for what it is instead of rendering it into something boring and soulless.
Good point. Thanks.
I love these design videos!!! As a designer, I love seeing your perspective on real-world examples.
Nice to hear. Thanks.
Brett can you make a video taking about historical porches?
Yes sir! Thanks.
I have been waiting for this, amd wish you'd do more on ranch house interior as well! Literally was watching another of your videos yesterday wishing you had more about ranch houses and how to fix, correct or where to even begin!! This is a wonderful start thank you!
Good to know. Thanks.
I like the second option. More down to earth. Also I just really think this series is great.
Thanks.
I like the colonial side better. At least this house had an interesting entryway.
We have an even more boring ranch. Just one low roofline across the front. Plate glass window. Brick half way up. Would like to change out the windows for taller ones but that will require cutting out or removing the brick façade. Also would like to do something with the front door roof line. Someday.
Life goals. Good luck.
I look forward to these Wednesday sessions! I think I like the modern one more. The colonial revival is good but you can only go so far with a ranch. I'd prefer to do revival all the way on a properly proportioned building. But I definitely don't like houses like the original, where they put in a few classical features, add faux divided lights on big windows, and stick shutters on it. Thanks!
Good feedback. Thanks.
On the ranch extend the roof fascia line out another six feet or more so that it aligns with the roof on the right. This will lower the roof considerably. Think of a circular drive passing by the front door. Sort of a Prairie carport detail.
I like it. Thanks.
I like the modern ranch one. Better yet; Jekyll and Hyde it. creating trends Brent!
I'm trying to add a carport to my 50's ranch and these videos are super helpful btw.
Absolutely! Jekyll and Hyde it. Business on the left party on the right. 😅
Good to know. Thanks.
Brent, nice to see both ways the house could go. Colonial revival is right for me especially with the added cupola
Cool. Thanks.
Colonial for sure. Great stuff as always Brent
Thanks.
Brent, I noticed that even in the “ranch” side you left out those hideous faux shutters. I guess there are some lines you will not cross! 😉
Hm, didn't mean to. Those should be gone, either side. Thanks for catching that.
@@BrentHull They are gone. That’s what I meant-that even in your ranch design you wouldn’t lower your standards to allow the typical ranch phony shutters.
Hi Brent, I've been told I'm an old soul. I vote for the Colonial Revival. I love what you've done with that rendering.
Thanks so much.
I vote for Colonial Revival.
Thank you.
Great job. I've seen some very good transitional homes as well that very nicely incorporate classical elements into a ranch platform.
Thanks.
I like both, but I'm leaning toward modern since this is a ranch after all--just seems more authentic to me.
I hear you.
I like the colonial revival side too. Would definitely be interested to see what you would do with your house too...and maybe why you haven't 🙂
Noted! I think i'm stuck. Haha.
@@BrentHull haha, that's fair for sure. I think a lot of people would be interested to see what your thoughts are so far and perhaps the feedback will break something loose for you. Anyway, really enjoying this series, thanks for sharing.
Hmmmm.... The Colonial revival is the better option. However, a full demolition is the BEST OPTION. Some homes are just too ugly to bother saving.
Ok.
That’s an Antebellacoloniranch you started with, lol.
Haha, Thx.
I'd like to see a redesign of your own house, not just the facade but the interior as well. While changing windows and door sizes and locations will improve the facade we really don't know if those changes will work with the interior layout of the house. You've said in other videos that you live in an "ugly 1960's ranch", so how would you redesign it from the inside out?
Coming soon. Thanks.
To me, the symmetry of the basic forms cry out for the more traditional look of the colonial. If the budget allowed, perhaps bump the roof to create the look of an original main house and later wings. I think with the trees it could look quite nice.
Thanks, much appreciated.
Brent, I love that you really do read our comments!! My vote is (like so many others) for the colonial revival revision - except with the addition of an appropriately SIZED cupola for a single story building.
Will you do your own home eventually?!? I feel like you deserve it!! 👏🏽👏🏽✌🏽✌🏽
Haha, well ok. I'm not sure i'll like the result.
Hi Brent, I liked the Colonial better as well. I have a typical 70's split foyer house, any ideas on how I could improve, fix, or dress-up the exterior? I always thought those were somewhat challenging. Love all your videos!
Hm, good question. Send me a pic to info@brenthull.com note that you saw the Wednesday video.
Ranch for sure! I love seeing colonial style but i think with a ranch styles home some of those borrowed elements just don't fit like it would. Here is houston, in garden oaks, full of ranch style homes that look amazing. I say go ranch, keep colonial for the colonial.
Good call!
Both are an improvement over the original, but I also prefer the Colonial Revival. I grew up in a classic ranch house and love that aesthetic, but I feel like that raised roof in the middle gets in the way of the more modern look. Another great video - thanks!
Nice, thank you.
I'm with the comments on this one, and I think that says something about us who watch your channel. We tend to like the older, more traditional, and elegant styles that the past had. I have a ranch house and really like the colonial and colonial revival style. But also like the wrap around farm house porches. Is it possible to blend those? Are they just too different and confusing together?
Hm, it depends. In the California/western ranch tradition, that actually is apart of historic ranches, the wrap around porch works. So yes, it can work. It is all in how well it is executed. My 2 cents.
So overwhelmingly the colonial revival is the favorite, I still fall between the two. Now why is that though do people have a preference of home as that traditional box and columns over that flat mass and glass?
Thanks.
I’m with you. Colonial is more interesting. Ranch treatment is a bit blah - lacks the dynamic interest of the colonial - especially the one-big-pain (pane) picture window. But in both cases, the phony shutters are gone.
Yes sir. Thanks.
Another great video. This house is unusual in that it has a deep porch and high porch ceiling. Most of theses ranches have a 4' deep faux porch with an 8' ceiling and the beam height at the window header height. What would you do with one of these?
And that’s exactly why I’m in favor of the beefier round columns of the colonial revival revision - you got the size and depth, why not use it 👍🏽
I'll work on it. Thx.
Noted.
Colonial MUCH BETTER!
The wrought iron is too new orleans style for me, is that called french?
What about the roof pitch? It looks almost mobilehomishly flat? To me it cheapens the look of the house, is that flatter roof more common on roofs in Texas with minimal snow load?
No way you could get an upstairs with dormers with this roof ridge height?
Interesting. Thx.
Hi! Can you explain a the reasoning for separating the paired windows? I live in a 50s ranch, I think it leans more traditional, with 3 sets of paired windows. Never thought anything of them! But curious about your suggestion to separate. Thanks!
Its really for traditional houses that are trying to be historic. The paired window is a Victorian invention and thus isn't right on traditional homes. A ranch home can make paired windows work. It just depends. Good luck.
Thanks!@@BrentHull
The irony is these 1960s ranch houses are often a aesthetically disappointing mismash of design elements but they'll last forever. They were the first houses built with consistently sufficient foundations and enough nails in the boards. They were still built with dimensional lumber. The original wiring is usually still OK. And they often had a decent amount of roof overhang to keep water away from the foundation. There's usually enough attic and crawlspace to update utility systems and the flat-finished sheetrock walls are easy to repair. As the polar opposite of Victorians, they're overall not at all discouraging for DIYers or rehabbers.
If you could figure out a way to update them to have distinct personalities - either classical or modern as you did - there would be no shortage of opportunities.
Noted. Thanks for your insights.
I'm really confused about how one would do two large picture windows. It doesn't seem symmetry would work.
it's not ideal, but i do think it works.
@@BrentHull As I think more about it, I realize that one of my assumptions about ranch houses is that they are inherently asymmetrical, with the picture window as the main focal point and the attached garage or carport anchoring one wing of the house, residential areas on the other. It makes the original design more confusing, not less; and then your redesign into colonial symmetry makes great sense, or it could be redesigned for ranch, but the strategy of trying out both on one elevation for contrast doesn't highlight the contrast in symmetries, by definition.
The colonial, not even close.
Ok, Thanks.
The colonial revival is much better. I still can’t get myself to like anything modern.
Noted! Thx
