  • If you've ever ordered daylilies or other plants online, you know that they can sometimes arrive on your doorstep in a condition that is, shall we say, less than beautiful. Shipping delays are never good, but thankfully, they aren't super common, either. If your daylilies "take the scenic route" in getting to you, we know they can look pretty terrible when they finally make it to your house. So what to do? We can't speak for every perennial on the market, but we are experts on daylilies. Our answer? Plant 'em!
Stressed out daylilies require a bit of extra TLC. This video shows exactly what to do to ensure your rough looking daylilies don't stay scary looking for long!

    ABOUT US:
Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that's been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation- including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you-with one daylily in a home garden.
    .............................
    FARM-FRESH TO YOU!
When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger - two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and produce more blooms quicker.
All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

I always go to your videos when I need some tips. You really have done a great job sharing important info! Thank you! Also I might add, you have inspired me with a new passion and hobby that brings joy to me! I was introduced to daylilies and all their beauty by receiving one of your catalogs 3 yrs ago. I bought my first couple of daylilies through you, and could not ever imagine life without a daylily garden after that! Your lilies are beautiful, colorful and look better and better with each year! Thank you!!

Wow Suzy, thank you! We love daylilies and want others to see just what great plants they are and how easy they are to grow. To do that, we've been trying really hard to make videos that are informative and fun. Your sweet comment really means a lot to us. We have several more videos in the works, but if there's something you'd like to know in particular, please let us know and we'll make a video about it!

That’s a great video and advice!
My new yard guy mowed down all 8 of my various daylilies! I pointed them out his first visit but he “ forgot” and I wasn’t home at the time.😢Is all lost forever? They were all short evergreens. I’m new at this and just gutted!

One of the great things about daylilies is how hardy they are. Keep them watered well and they should bounce back in time to bloom next season.

I'd be ready to do murder! So sorry this happened to you. Hope they come back vigorously next year.

Deer have been sleeping in my day lilly bed. Squashed! 🤷

Deer eat the blossoms right off mine. So sorry yours are squashed. Would you consider putting up chicken wire? Or putting some 4 foot or taller stakes in the bed so it won't be so comfy?

I've learned so much from your videos and really enjoy them. My question is: I love it when all of my daylilies are blooming, but toward the end of summer their foliage starts to look brown and nasty. It kind of detracts from the garden. Can you cut the foliage down and remove the brown leaves or what should you do. I really appreciate your help!!!

Hi Susan. Thanks for your kind words about our videos. We're having a lot of fun with them!
We aren't crazy about end of season foliage either. We generally trim ours to clean it up. If you decide to do so, be sure to leave about 4"-6" so it won't hurt the plant.

If they have died to the ground, they probably won't come back.

My day lilies are not looking good. Just came up on your videos in my search for help...I am in the Northeast, have sandy soil, they are in full sun. I have had them for about 5 yrs...They never have really green foliage, more light green with brown streaks and spots and not a whole lot of blooms😢

Hi! Without seeing your daylilies, it sounds like they could benefit from a good fertilizer and soil amendment. Daylilies love nitrogen, so a good fertilizer that is high in nitrogen would be a fine place to start. In the fall, you could work some manure or compost into your sandy soil to supply added nutrients. We're betting the healthier soil will improve the streaks you see on your foliage. If the plant is really large, it may be time to divide. (Five years is usually average.) You could add the soil amendments when you divide. Don't divide now! You'll want to get your dividing and planting done about a month before your first expected frost date.
