Royal Albatross ~ 💕 BANDING DAY For TF & TFT CHICKS With A GLS Tag Cable Attached! 💕 8.9.24

- Опубліковано 9 вер 2024
- Today Rangers Sharyn & Julia and DOC team banded the chicks in the colony including Top Flat (TF) and Top Flat Track (TFT) chicks. Ranger Julia begins by picking up TF and taking him away from his new nesting spot to a different location so it would not imprint a stressful event in his nesting place of comfort.
Ranger Sharyn will put on a stainless steel band with a GLS (Global Location Sensor) on his right leg. She will use a pair of banding pliers to attached the GLS tag cable as well. TF chick is 199 days old & TFT is 191 days old and was also banded with a stainless steel band and GLS tag. When they are finished banding TF, the rangers head over to TFT and band him as well. You can really see how big these chicks are now!
Just like last season with Manaaki, this season 20 chicks at Pukekura have been tagged with a GLS (Global Location Sensor) data logger on a leg band. 10 females and 10 males will be chosen so that sex differences in foraging areas can be accounted for. The data will be collected for at least the first three years of the lives of these juveniles. We cannot use transmitting GPS* (Global Positioning System) tags for a project like this, as GPS tags mounted to back feathers are molted off the birds after a year.
The data from the GLS tags will not be available online like transmitting tags, and only collected as the bird returns to the colony as an adolescent. The collected information will help us identify where these birds travel to during their first years at sea and assist in assessments of where they face different threats. The knowledge gained may also help our team advocate for toroa conservation internationally. This work underlines the importance of the small Pukekura/Taiaroa Head colony. It is easily accessed and consequently plays a key role in gathering information on Toroa and their conservation worldwide.💕 Thank you for watching!

Gosh, you don't realise how big they are until they are in the arms of the Rangers! What a gorgeous boy ❤
Congratulations to Ranger Sharyn and Julia and the DOC team that everything went so well. And thank you for letting us be there. All the best 🍀
TF was liking the holding part. He felt calm
The human team was almost martyred by TF. He is a tough boy. Can't wait to tract his journey across the ocean.
Thanks to you Lady Hawk and all the group who help the albies thrive.
Seeing them with the Rangers always puts their size in the proper perspective. What massive birds. No wonder they’re essentially living dinosaurs.
I'm sure the boys were glad that this strange new human ritual did not involve a basket! It's quite something to see the banding of a 20+ lb albie compared to the peregrine falcon bandings I'm used to seeing when the chicks are only 5-6 weeks old. Thank you to Sharyn, Julia and the DOC team and thanks to Lady Hawk for the excellent info in the Description, and the great video, of course!
Well, these boys have grown big. So it's arms full of hope for the albie population. The data they'll collect in their future will be precious for further protection and conservation.
TF is calm as he is expecting a fish at the end of this
😂
Wow TF and TFT, you will be doing important work for the well being of your kind when you gain your freedom! Wonderful work Rangers! 👽👽👽👽👍👍👍👍 💖 This is a momentous occasion for these Chicks.
Amazing the way Julia held them so gently yet firmly in her lap and both TF and TFT for most part didn't mind it that much either.
TFT is so relaxed compared to Mr Grumpus TF. TF doesn't even like to be near TFT, which is a shame, Manaaki, Quarry, UQ and TFT last year all interacted / dancedand UQ liked sitting next to Manaaki. We need two lady albies to move up to TF...
TF doesn't want too much attention. He doesn't like it.
He doesn't understand what they help him. TFT behaves better again. Thanks a lot for your video!❤
Julia's loving grip in action 😍
A new stage in the life of these young albatross ❤a big thank you to all the rangers😇 who are on alert every day 🤗 these birds are lucky to live on Pukekura/Taiaroa Head 🍀🍀
Job well done by the team! TF looks HUGE in Ranger Julia's arms! 🥰
Just go away, I 've had enough of you now! 😂😂
It might be well-worth the Albatross' & the Ranger's time to invent a "HOOD" to wear during these "Banding Moments".
It may dissolve the FEAR the Albatross exhibits.
I know a "HOOD" is used with other Birds during certain times........
"Thank You Lady Hawk" for sharing the Albatross' (hug BIG)
GOD BLESSES ALL.
And thank you Lady Hawk for the best Information
Poor TF...for 3 days in a row he was handled by these invasive humans.....but don't they have anything better to do??? Thanks for the news and the nice video, Lady Hawk!

This gives you exactly how large they are! Beautiful day. ❤❤❤
Dziękuję za troskliwą opiekę nad albatrosami ❤ nasze młode są już naprawdę duże i piękne, oby miały szczęśliwie życie i omijały je wszystnie niebezpieczeństwa:)
Dziękuję za filmik Lady Hawk 🌹🍀
Big ❤
So we will only know where they went when they return in a few years . ..... i cant 😢😫❤
I guess the juvenile Albies are banded only now because their legs are now fully grown ?. I have seen rings put to tight and the birds being molested their whole life with it. This is a very delicate task.
I was wondering if the NZ Rangers have contacts with observers of the Chilian Coasts ?. Who eventually may see the banded Albies and be able to give informations ?.
Wow they are big boys now!❤
Another wonderful video Lady Hawk-Thank you for keeping us all up to date with what is happening to these beautiful birds, as they reach another milestone...
If Manakai being tracked does anyone know of his whereabouts at present....
Agreed! Thank you Lady Hawk for these wonderful videos!! Your love for these chicks comes through❤❤❤❤
Gorgeous!❤
Thank you so much for this wonderful coverage much appreciated, dear Lady Hawk. 💙💙 I can't thank Rangers Sharyn, Julia and DOC Team enough for taking such good care of these albie chicks that we love so much. 💞💞 I take my hat off to all of you, dear friends. 💞💞 May God abundantly bless TF and TFT and all albie chicks in the Colony, their parents and everyone who is taking good care of them with love and devotion. 🙌💞🙌 Much love, blessings and hugs to you and all. 💐💐💙❤🥰💕🐥🌱🦢💕🙏
❤❤❤
I would love to ask Ranger Julia what it feels like to hold these big bois! What their bill/beak feels like, their feet, their feathers, the weight, their strength… she is a zen master!
Weren't the eggs only 4 or 5 inches when they hatched? Look at those boys now. Giants! 😂 I hope we get some good info down the road.
It means that they are near fkedging in a few weeks 😢😭💔💔
I'd rather they had the colored bands, then we would know who's who... they are getting so big, next month they'll probably be taking off... there adventure then begins...
Woman is obviously not supposed for working with tools! It's pain to see how she is trying to dislocate his leg. BUT OF COURSE ONE MAY SAY IT'S ALL RIGHT!!!
Are the alpacas gonna be fixed when the small donkeys get fixed? BIG ❤
Super nagranie naszych kochanych albatrosów dziękuję bardzo ❤️❤️☀️
Dziękuję za super opiekę nad kochanymi naszymi albatrosami super nagranie dziękuję bardzo pozdrawiam ❤❤❤☀️
All procedures went smoothly and well 🙏 Thank you Sharyn and all rangers, helpers and scientists 🙏 🤗 These royal boys have no idea how important is all of this for survival of their species 😊🤍 🦢🙏🍀 Albatrosses are huge birds but very vulnerable in the same time 😮 I can't wait for some information from GLS tags e.g. Manaki, to know how they thrive and where do they move 😊💞 Thank you so much specifically for this one video and comprehensive information about all procedures and what is all for dear Lady Hawk 💐 🤗 Promoting knowledge is critical for future survival of these giant and magnificent birds 🦢 🤍🙏 💞 🍀 You are awesome 👍😎 💞
