For me, this to this day is the best Israel has ever sent to Eurovision. A gorgeous singer with a powerful yet angelic voice and stunning stage presence, and a great catchy tune with the most powerful message. Not many around Europe knew at that time what the song symbolized: A young Jewish girl standing on a German stage less than 40 years after the holocaust, singing about her people still being alive. Even the costumes reflected the notorious yellow star. The beauty of it is that instead of being angry and depressing, the song is cheerful and most of all proud. I remember myself a child watching this live, my first ever Eurovision song contest. I wanted her to win so badly! Today I think that 1983 was simply an outstanding ESC year, all top4 songs were winner material and probably some others too. So 2nd place was still a great achievement. RIP beautiful Ofra!
Singing "Am Israel Chai" - Means The Jewish people, nation is still alive - is so emotional, while it was sang on the a german land. This is a legand, and Ofra was an amazing singer. RIP Ofra

The symbolism of this song is incredibly powerful. Here's a beautiful Jewish woman singing in Hebrew in Germany, a country whose Nazi regime tried, just 40 years prior, to brutally erase the existence of the entire Jewish people and culture from the continent. Yet, here she stands, alive, the back up singers wearing yellow as sign of defiance and pride, not humiliation. Nazi ideology failed, Jewish people and culture persisted and thrived. חי חי חי שלום 💙
