Ellie leads this Moby Dick like, anger fueled vengeance quest that results in her living her biggest fear - being alone. And Joel was always going to die a brutal, fucked up death for something he had in 30 years of killing, smuggling and surviving. If you only like stories that make you feel good at the end then you don’t like storytelling as an art and are just conditioned to think that a great story = feeling good about it.
The opening scene of season 2 better be just like this because it’s truly a watershed moment in storytelling. This scene works so well because it’s the calm before the storm.

When Yara asked her why she saved them from the Seraphites, can't remember the exact wordings but Abby said something like trying to make up for something, heavily implying that she feels guilt for killing Joel.

Ellie being gay was something that has been established sense the first game. And Abby herself is shown to have a very clear attraction to male and males only.
The game starts so peacefully and there is a great contrast with the events that follow later in the game. It's the quiet before the storm.
