    I got into Warcry just before second edition came out when I discovered that I could use all my old Beastmen minis from 6th Edition Warhammer Fantasy. I bought some fantasy themed terrain on Etsy and a battlemat on Amazon--and consequently never had a reason to buy any of the official Warcry boxes. Use whatever terrain you want--Warcy just needs elevation: platforms, bridges, things to climb. Are the beastmen competitive? If you practice and refine your list based on tournament scenarios, they can be. Are they fun? Yes, always. For Soulblight Gravelords, the Underworlds warbands are very popular in competitive play (most Underworlds warbands have Warycry profiles), but Graveguard with Great Wight Blades were adjusted in the Metawatch specifically because they are so popular/efficient. Download the rules and give it a try--you probably already have everything you need to have a great time with it.

    16:45 the idea of skeletons is you get your necromancers (basically anything that can Rez) into position then sac off your skeletons to summon them back into the positions you need them. The weakness is you break like an egg if your opponent understands your win conditions and can snipe your rezers.

    Jump into Warcry! It’s great! You already have everything you need to start playing so you might as well!
    Bespoke vs Compendium. In the first edition many people felt the bespoke teams were weaker than the compendium team. When people looked in detail, what was happening was people were comparing a single box of the bespoke team against compendium teams built from all the options across the range. The current situation is some bespoke teams struggle and some are top tier, same with the compendium teams. The key part is competitive bespoke teams require more than one box to double down on their best fighters.
    For a Soulblight list try out this one. Soulblight usually do well with just tons of Skeletons. I would suggest you make this list in Warcrier and then hit the print button at the bottom of the list. Tick Show Universal Reactions & Abilities. That will give you a page with all the profiles and all the abilities.

    If you’re interested in seeing winning deck lists check out Wartally.com although we have just had a big FAQ with lots of point changes so things will have changed.
    For terrain, you can just play whatever looks good. The tree terrain isn’t required. Warcry tournaments will use a variety. It is recommened you try keep it symmetrical for matched play games. Most kill team players who start think the random mission cards are a key part of the Warcry and it’s just a random fluffy game, that’s not he case those mission cards are fun but they’re no different to the Killteam deck which did similar. I would recommend starting with the matched play games listed on Warcrier, warcrier.net/docs/battles/matched-play/ that gives 6 options you can pick from. For more variety, you can use the mission cards, there’s a random generator here warcry.zuckerrausch.de

    There are quite a handful of competitive Warcry focused UA-cam channels and they reported a massive increase in Warcry tournament attendees in the current season.
    Maybe that prompted to finally get that Metawatch out of the door.
    Also: The bespoke teams only add to the list building possibilities. They are part of the "competitive meta" so to say.

    With Warcry terrain your best bet is to use the cards with set layouts on. If you want a relatively fair set-up use only the match play ones. Don’t worry about the new stuff, you can completely ignore it.

    I would say that from the metawatch, I'm Warcry curious. I don't play any GW games right now but I've been looking into Kill Team. With this update to Warcry and doing some research, it reminds me a bit of Crisis Protocol. That's not a bad thing for me as MCP is my main game. Still researching, but my interest is peaked.

    I was surprised about the Warcry meta watch article myself. I think GW may be gauging interest in Warcry using digital downloads as another yardstick.

      @@TabletopImpulse you can’t climb, go through doors or go under arches. Given the vast majority of boards have a considerable amount of stuff to climb on, and going over or through stuff is key to getting around the board. That means that for all their raw speed cavalry are actually not very mobile, and if your opponent hides things you need on upper levels they are essentially taken out of the game.

    I’m not good at list building because I’m incredibly indecisive. I just can’t make up my mind. I go and look at lists online and I wind up not using them because it goes against my philosophy(?). One thing I really love about Kill Team is... no list building. I take Warcry the same way, and just use the “bespoke” teams as they come out of the box. Apparently, that’s absolutely NOT what anyone who plays Warcry in a competitive fashion does. It’s all about list building and bringing in allies from other factions and building lists that are points efficient and not very “themed”. Optimal Game State is a good resource as well as Cinderfall Gaming. They both seem to do some competitive Warcry content.

    The bit at the end of the Metawatch video, concerning what to expect going forward, for Warcry, was a little enigmatic. There was no specific answer given concerning either the product release schedule, the type of new releases planned nor any suggestion that there would be regularly scheduled balance updates. As you stated, Warcry is an odd duck. If you already play AoS, you literally need to purchase NOTHING. Especially if you already have a decent terrain collection. In spite of the video, I still have my doubts that either Underworlds or Warcry are long for the world as supported game systems. GW seems focused on trying to identify which systems are generating model sales, I believe with a plan to stop devoting development resources to rule sets that don’t generate model sales.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      I did not find it enigmatic, I took it as a commitment to future metawatches. But I could be wrong, it does happen from time to time.

    I miss proper list building. The reason I've given up playing 40k is because army building is so bland. I feel the same with Kill Team 21, but I think having dedicated teams means more competitive. If that makes sense? I've not had coffee yet...

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому +1

      Makes a degree on sense, though I like the simplified list building 40k has right now. Makes it easy to throw together a list for the game. No modern games that I know of actually have the "pay 2 points for a grenade" style of points other then 30k and the old world which have been specifically created for people who miss that stuff.

    The metawatch coming out really feels like a curve ball. We've chat before in the live streams about warcry coming or going, underworlds allegedly going and Spearhead and mordheim rumours... there's a hell of a lot of overlap... what remains after AoS4 gets launched at this point seems a bit of a conundrum. Like yourself, I have a great big Maggotkin army, don't play as much AoS as I would like currently. A revitalised Warcry could be a magnificent opportunity. Lots to ponder.

    • @TabletopImpulse

    I'm Warcry curious, but I find the teams that come in the actual Warcry sets to be uninspiring. I don't play AoS, so the Warcry barrier to entry, for me at least, is more than I want to deal with.
    As for list building and Kill Team. Dear lord, please no. Kill Team works great without list building and would be a meta-chasing train wreck with it. GW has their hands full balancing the game as is. Now if you really like that sort of thing there are teams that lean into the roster mechanic such as Inquisitorial Agents, Warpcoven, etc. Give those a try.

      I feel like some AoS ranges, like the Soulblight Gravelords, but also the Lizardmen the Daughters of Khaine basically retained the same asthetic they had in Warhammer Fantasy. Not a fan of some of the newer more "age of sigmar" stuff.

    The problem with Warcry is that there is no reason to buy the actual Warcry teams to play it. They're the most gorgeous miniatures and they are only bought by collectors.

      Underworlds has consistently great looking minis. IMO, Warcry is hit or miss on their teams - Pyre & Flood looked great, but the launch box teams were underwhelming & a lot of the first edition teams were very weird.

      Buy a couple of boxes so you have list building options and suddenly the bespoke teams are much, much better.
