Hello. Great, informative video. I just have one question. The pool in this video does not appear to have a drain. What needs to be done if you have a drain in the deep in (as I do)? Thx.
Once you have the liner squared up and a good vacuum you need to go ahead a put the main drain face plates on before adding water. Unless you want to dive the pool when it’s full. Make sure your screw holes are cleaned out good.

My wife and two friends of ours just did this. It took about 4 hours and nothing about it was difficult. The vacuuming the air out took about 3 hours. Then we filled the pool, which took two days. Now the dirt has washed a bit under the liner, luckily it will never cave since the water puts more pressure on the wall than the dirt but still. If I was a pool guy I’d grind and seal the walls. It looked really good when done. We paid a company to do our felt and liner but they are painfully slow, the liner is in but he couldn’t get the folds out, he said the pumps weren’t managing to do it so he wants a stronger pump. Surely there’s another way. Been waiting a week since he first put it in. It would be cool though if he’d managed first time.PS buy the wire brush you put on your drill, it’s too hard doing it by hand. They left us all winter without completing the liner. Hello Nick - It is possible to add a light. However, it's not a simple task. You'd have to run conduit underground and to the backside of the pool wall. Then you'd have to cut a hole in the wall for a light niche or go with a nicheless light (AquaLumin III).

Probably, but may not be a good idea for slip/hazard purposes, especially if you have children. I'm willing to bet your local pool contractor could order you specific steps that match and are slip resistant.
When the contractor did mine it appeared to be very very tight. It had to stretch a foot at least in every corner. Shouldnt it fit more like a glove? Wont stretching it make it very thin?
I was told by a rep for our pool liner company that we are not to install the liner ourselves. He said we would mess it up. But, the people that would install it, would make money on selling us the liner as well as labor. That is about $10,000. Advise appreciated.
We installed ours diy when we built the pool. Just reviewed this video to replace our liner diy next week. Not a big deal to diy. We paid 3k for our new 20x40 heavy duty liner. You could screw it up twice before you get it right and still beat 10k. Couple tips...use a strong shop vac and don't put the hose in far or it will get stuck behind the liner. For the main drain be sure the underside gasket is either glued and dried in place or screwed in most of the way before laying in liner so that under gasket doesn't move. After liner is sucked to bottom, add top gasket, cut out liner and add drain screen. For the rest of the holes, don't install gaskets and cut liner until water level is just below them.
The main drain on a vinyl pool usually has two gaskets. One goes under the liner and one over. At least a day ahead of the liner install, you can glue the bottom gasket to the top of the main drain. We recommend using RTV silicone. This will prevent the gasket from sliding around when the liner is placed over it. Once the liner is in place, vacuum out the air from behind the liner like we did in the video. Then you can line up the 2nd gasket and main drain ring over the liner. The holes should match up with the holes on the gasket/frame on the underside of the liner. Then you can insert the screws through the face ring and outer gasket, through the liner, and into the bottom gasket and frame. Once the screws are tight, you can cut out the liner material that is inside the ring (similar to how we did the skimmer in the video).
Wouldn't it be better to have the water go just under the returns and skimmers before you attach the new face plates to avoid putting to much tension on the liner?
It is best to wait until the water is just under the returns and skimmer. Unfortunately, we shot this video out of town and were not able to come back once the water level had risen.
I know this video is a bit old but I have a question. My pool guy told me that I can’t DIY a liner replacement because the pool will cave in. He has sort of screwed me over before and I’ll be hiring someone new regardless but I was wondering, if I’m replacing the vinyl liner is it okay to fully drain the pool? It’s an inground saltwater pool. Thanks :)
Hi Katie. While doing research on how to fix my 37 year old pool that has been out of operation and in need of a liner for 13 years now. There's very little water in the deep end (some ducks and squirrels frequent it for water 😂). Anyways, my pool has not caved in. I'd say if your pool is still operational and just in need of a new liner, you're going to be fine. The tricky part is getting the measurements and ordering the correct size. Hopefully yours is an easy shape, mine is a reverse kidney shape and its going to be a little tricky (for me) to get it accurately measured out
@@ridgid859 Thank you so much for replying! My pool is pretty simple rectangle shape so that shouldn’t be toooo difficult :) Really appreciate the response! Have a good night Xx
@@crownhouses2296 there some cool calculators online that help you measure pool for liners. That might help! Just wait until the ground dries out a little. In 2009 when we replaced the liner at our new residence, I drained it in the spring, and the liner came up about 3ft in the deep end. Had to cut the liner to pump the water out. This year, doing it this week (Labor Day week) and only had 6" or so of water in the deep end, and that was with a bad leak around my skimmer faceplate. I had hired someone to do it in 2009, but DIY this time as well as repairing the wall around the skimmer.
Our pool looks exactly like this and the quotes we are getting are super high. I know we can get a decent liner for our pool for less than 1200 bucks would it be easy to diy
It's been a while, but I believe the homeowner had just bought the house, and the pool had fallen into disrepair before they arrived. The pool was in South Florida, so the water turned green pretty quickly without proper chlorination.
Do you have an email or phone number I can contact you? I'm on my 2nd liner with the same manufacturer, and I think they've made mistakes in the manufacturing, causing the liner to have to stretch too much. It failed within 2 seasons, with a big hole in the shallow end corner. They blamed it on chemicals and sun. However, my first liner lasted 10 years. I don't want to name the company publicly. For the rest of the holes, don't install gaskets and cut liner until water level is just below them.
what about floor drains
About when the liner has steps? How to complete?
Clearly this is not a DIY project. I don't even have that many friends, let alone the actual knowledge!!
Good video
I do not see what to do about the main drain at the bottom of the deep end
3 grand is normal ?
Can you guys do a makeover on my pool .. please
After you snap the liner in the track, when do you place the light, and the main drain?????
Light trim before water gets to it, main drain after a few inches of water cover it
Wouldn't it be better to have the water go just under the returns and skimmers before you attach the new face plates to avoid putting to much tension on the liner?
It is best to wait until the water is just under the returns and skimmer. Unfortunately, we shot this video out of town and were not able to come back once the water level had risen.
I know this video is a bit old but I have a question. My pool guy told me that I can’t DIY a liner replacement because the pool will cave in. He has sort of screwed me over before and I’ll be hiring someone new regardless but I was wondering, if I’m replacing the vinyl liner is it okay to fully drain the pool? It’s an inground saltwater pool. Thanks :)
By the way, it’s quite likely I end up hiring someone to do the job, but I’m more curious if my pool man is being shady!
Although right now it seems like the cost of pools is suffering due to supply chain issues. I know chlorine for one is in short supply and very expensive. I believe some resins are as well, so that may effect liner pricing. Best of luck! Hope we are both swimming in our refurbished pools in no time!
I had hired someone to do it in 2009, but DIY this time as well as repairing the wall around the skimmer.
my pool shape is in egg shape, so, how would I take measurement for that?
Hello Asmita - Here is a good video on how to measure a liner for a freeform style inground pool. ua-cam.com/video/avkUQ-GBGC0/v-deo.html
Oh man mine isn't like that all most of mine is sand but alot of it is rock (big rocks)
No Main Drains?
This pool did not have an active main drain. At some point, it was filled in with concrete.
I need someone to install a new Liner. I live in lake Havasu City, AZ. If possible I prefer not to use Neat Pools.
Our pool looks exactly like this and the quotes we are getting are super high. I know we can get a decent liner for our pool for less than 1200 bucks would it be easy to diy
It's not difficult if you follow the steps in the video and have 2-3 people helping you do the install.
Great video,! Why the hell was the fresh water GREEN though? 😮
I just need some advice and would like to send you pics.

Final Step: Fill pool with canal water!
Oh man that is funny. LMAO
O.44. No drain settings, but there is clearly a discharge valve on the system. Still love these videos. Always very helpful.
How to repair the walls of a inground liner pool
Where’s your main drains???
The main drain for this pool had been filled with concrete long before we were asked to replace the liner.
Wby does this pool even have a liner? Why not just plaster it?
First person to remove their hands from the table dies.
that is some bad looking fill water, looks like the pool is filling green
I had the same color water in my pool wound up being high iron had to get mineral remover
City water is usually the worst hahahaha
I did it a much easier way, I hired a professional to do it.
You folded?
You never explained how to seal off the step for vacuuming the air from behind the liner. We use stair boards.. but you use NOTHING ????
You could see them taping it off in the time lapse with duct tape
Vinyl pools are so bad.
good video
