The Definite Article and its Use in Italian

  • The good thing about learning another language like Italian is that in learning all the grammar, we end up better understanding English grammar as well! Have you heard of a definite article before? Well you use them every day, considering that "the" is one of the most commonly used words in English. Unfortunately in Italian there is more than one, so let's learn them all now!

    This was quite confusing to me a few months back. I've come back for a recap and they're making much more sense now. Every day, I make myself say a few phrases in my head. Ones involving harder structure.

    5:34 I have a question: why we didn’t use “è” instead of “sono” because we are referring to the time (it) and (it)use “è” same as she and he.Why you used “sono”?

    • @larrynarvaez7545
      @larrynarvaez7545 3 роки тому +1

      I don’t know much Italian but I think the subject in telling Italian time is the number of the hour on the clock. For example, if it’s 1 AM or 1 PM, e is used, but if it’s any other time, say from 2 AM to 12 Noon or 2 PM to 12 Midnight, sono is used. (Even if it’s only minutes past 1AM or 1PM, it’s already plural). In the example used above, it’s 2 o’clock (due), so the subject is plural and the verb should be plural also. This is the same thing in Spanish. 😊✌️

      It's due to a very common phenomenon of Italian phonology known as "syntactic gemination": some words - such as stressed monosyllables, oxyton words and others - cause the "strengthening" of the first consonant of the following word (as long as there's no kind of punctuation separating them), which is pronounced as if it was double:
      "fa' presto" pronounced like [faPPrèsto]
      "sta' fermo" just as [staFFérmo]
      "va' piano" just as [vaPPjàno]
      When this occurs within a single word, the gemination becomes orthographically evident. The 2nd-person singular imperative of the verbs "dare", "fare", "stare", "andare" and "dire", when used in their apostrophized form, are monosyllables that fit this rule: here's why when we have to attach an object pronoun to them, its first consonant is doubled:
      dare --> da' (imp.) --> dalle (da' + le)
      fare --> fa' (imp.) --> fanne (fa' + ne)
      stare --> sta' (imp.) --> stammi (sta' + mi)
      andare --> va' (imp.) --> vacci (va' + ci)
      dire --> di' (imp.) --> dillo (di' + lo)
      The only object pronoun that doesn't undergo gemination is GLI, as it is already a geminated sound by nature:
      "dagli" - "stagli" - "vagli" ...
