I'm not generally considered "patient" when it comes to people. But I have all the patience in the world for my plants! I have a huge variety of vines, growing all over my little cedarwood saltbox cabin. They've all been growing for 10 - 15 years. They have not "ruined" my siding so far, with minimal spring and fall maintenance.
It's so beautiful. You have truly nurtured this specimen and have reaped all its glorious benefits. I bought one a month ago so I am prepared for the long relationship lol. Thanks for the tips!
My climbing hydrangea was planted last summer, it’s late May of the following year now and I see several blooms are developing. I’m in north West Ireland.👌😊

Did not realize how much time they needed. This one is going under a tree for support. Hope I am still living in this house to see it bloom. LoL

Mine has toppled over a retaining wall. Needed to rebuild the wall. It is so strong! Also, I cut some woody vines to use as pea stakes and the sticks rooted and started growing. Just in case anyone wants more plants out of the one they've got - just cut some woody stems and stick them in the ground.
I have one and it just started growing two years ago. Its beautiful and worth the wait. I was able to start another from the runners. Thanks for the information!

Hi Yulia, just had to watch this one again! I have a white and a pink climber and I’m probably not going to ever see them mature but just had to put one (white) on my so very tall chimney. I checked it really good and I think it’s going to be gorgeous! It’s beginning to start climbing and I have runners everywhere. They face nw. The pink one has been a challenge but I believe it’s going to make it and it’s designed to climb the porch wall which has a beautiful peak opposite the chimney! You’re right about having to be patient, I’ve been working with them for 3 yrs. thanks for the information, helped a lot! Oh, yours is spectacular!
You are right about it being attractive to rodents. I found a dead weasel stuck behind my trellis. It was so smelly in that spot and looking closely I saw a patch of fur...eek!

This is my absolute favorite plant. I used to live in Nova Scotia on the east coast and these grew so well there. One was three stories tall and covered with blooms. I started one two years ago and it is taking forever to get going. It doesn't help that the dog keeps running into that area chasing squirrels. I heard that it doesn't bloom until about year five, I am trying to be patient. They are also very hard to find here at nurseries in Ontario. One guy hadn't even heard of them.
Wow! What a beautiful plant and another very interesting video. How slow would you say the hydrangea is compared to an English ivy? I have an English ivy on a northern wall (zone 6) and that took quite some time for it to cover it (the wall is about 3m x 3m, so not that large).

Do you fertilize it??? With what? I planted one this year, and I am wondering if I should fertilize it often to get it going? I did use bio-tone when I planted it, but should I use liquid fertilizer too? What about transplanting? Do they do well with transplanting? I am wondering if I have to transplant mine when it gets bigger because I planted it on a 8 foot trellis.

Now I'm wondering what that must have looked like til the "chimney" was totally covered. Wish now I had followed thru with doing it myself back then.

Noticing the rhododendron (or azalea?) next to you, I'm wondering if that should be deadheaded. My rhododendron had ONE bloom this spring (!) and I didn't know if I should cut off the spent bloom. It rarely blooms and sometimes it blooms in the fall. Crazy. Maybe it's too deep in the soil? I gave it a second helping of Holly-tone fertilizer when I pulled the dried tulip foliage from around it to plant up some annuals (verbena and vinca). We'll see.
Hi, Yuliya. Thanks for answering my questions. Last summer, I planted a Nikko Blue in part shade woodland. It probably spent its whole life in a greenhouse as it was stunning. After a mild winter in CT, there is new growth from the base, but the old wood growth quickly turns black and dies. Am I doing something wrong? Does it take awhile for a greenhouse plant to become cold hardy?

Would it take another few years to bloom at the same level as it does now or would it just bounce back next season? Alternatively, would it be better to cut away the trellis from between the branches, mount a new one with a good spacer to pull it away from the wall and just tie the plant to the new trellis until new growth twines around to attach itself? Zone 5b southern side of the house; brick wall
I have one that is really old and came with the house we just bought. It is very overgrown and since it’s on our fence it’s making it lean as it’s super heavy. How can I prune or train it back without damaging it.
I think they're lovely but I want to stick with a smaller vine like clematis. It's the maintenance of a vine once it reaches the soffit and roof. I'd have to pay someone to do the work.

You mentioned that climbing plants may be susceptible to rodents. We live like in a country setting...so I'm concerned that they may attract mice and the mice and other rodents may use the plants to climb on to find their way into the house. I tried researching online but not able to find good information. Would you be able to help me out with this concern?
make sure your walls are not compromised (no holes or cracks). mice will get in even if you have no climbing plants if you have entrance points. We just dealt with that problem, they were getting in from another side of the house where it turned out we had a crack in the foundation. Patched it up, and no problem!
