💯%. I remember it was the first time I Saw movie in the theaters, and said, “that guy is going to win an Oscar.” And then being supremely disappointed that he wasn’t even nominated. Then, I started to learn about the whole “comedies don’t get nominated” thing.
@@HHH-ye1ro yes, Eddie Murphy is absolutely amazing… he’s the only good comedian aside from Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. All 3 of them blow all other comedians outta the water with their amazing talent snd versatility
Aside from Dreamgirls, this is Eddie Murphy's best performance..he was absolutely perfect as Sherman, covered in latex and padding..his performance came through in his heart..its a shame he was not nominated for an Oscar that year
He won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor that year. I wonder if either of these guys voted for him. He'd have been my choice for the Oscar, and it's shame this movie isn't generally well liked anymore.
@@flaccidusminimus2170 actually Dolemite is My Name came out after my post and I think this was a bit better than Nutty Professor He certainly deserved to be nominated for both movies
@@flaccidusminimus2170 Actually that movie was very well received critically In Dreamgirls I'm torn between him and Mark Wahlberg for The Departed for Best Supporting, but either of them was WAYY Better than Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine I loved the movie and he was fine....but he didn't do anything for me Definitely a Career Oscar like Jack Palace in City Slickers or Don Ameche in Cocoon I hate they all won over MUCH MORE DESERVING ACTORS
After looking back, this movie is starting to grow on me like it's becoming one of my favorite comedies and Prof. Klump is a great protagonist and my favorite role from Eddie Murphy. He's funny, but also likable, interesting, sympathetic, good-hearted, well mannered, Eddie Murphy does a great job playing as him giving versatility to his performance, and you couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy. Him being fat is not from his own doing. It's from how he was raised based on the famous dinner scene alone and you identify with him.
Eddie Murphy was great in this movie. Credit should also be given to Rick Baker, the makeup artist who transformed Eddie into all those characters physically and won the Oscar for it.
I was taking a drink of soda when Buddy Love said to Reggie about his hair " ...Aw Reggie I heard of dreadlocks but shitlocks? You take the comedy too far!" The soda did not stay in my mouth.
I am so happy that this and its sequel revived Eddie Murphy's career as they mention in the review. Even after this he made some bad flicks but he also had some surprisingly good ones. What Pulp Fiction did for John Travolta is what I feel this did for Eddie Murphy.
This is one of my favorite comedies. It's not a "masterpiece" for sure, but it's hilarious and fun from start to finish. It does what it's supposed to as a comedy, so it's fully successful to me! :)
The movie was BIG COMEDY with BIG LAUGHS, the makeup artist Rick baker done great job created characters for Murphy to play physically, won Oscar for best performance, Jada Pickett was beautiful romantic interest who likes the professor & buddy love, marginal thumbs up for me.
Me too!!! Not only it is absolutely hilarious, but its message about accepting yourself for who you are and not changing to please others is one a lot of people can relate to, myself included.
Coming to America was another good one. But I agree he had so much different personalities with every family member that this was definitely the strongest where he played many roles.
Eddie Murphy got the fat version idea from Roger Ebert who hated him his early success the fat and nerd type and can't get a woman. Eddie Murphy was good looking and successful. He put his talent and anger toward ebert in this movie and love to him.
I don't think Ebert disliked Murphy at all. Murphys career had fallen by a lot until this movie. I think these guys were frustrated before this because he wasnt picking good scripts but I dont think either disliked Murphy. They were just waiting for him to pick a good script which he found here.
"Eddie is back" is disrespectful. He had been working non-stop in a film every year. Just because they didn't like the movies he was doing, it doesn't mean he was gone. Lastly, it's ridiculous to equate Sherman's analysis of being who others want him to he with Eddie himself. None of his characters were so vile or far removed from his early work that he had to become himself again. It ain't that deep! Bottom line, his talent was always there, but great talent needs great material.
What they’re saying is Eddie Murphy, at his best, played roles that tempered his cutting edge humor with a natural charismatic sweetness, that was appealing. He took roles later on that were more mean spirited and driven on his name and not his performance. He got back to what made him great.
Eddie was amazing here. Classic comedy. R.I.P. Siskel and Ebert
Eddie Murphy should have gotten an Oscar nod for this.
damn right
It wasn’t that convincing and the movie was just a formulaic comedy. A very good formulaic comedy, but one nonetheless.

How wasn't it convincing? And you don't think formulaic movies ever got Oscars?

IMO, He deserve an Oscar nomination. This is Dr. Strangelove/Peter Sellers ' good

And an excellent analysis of Klump and Buddy Love and how it related to Murphy's career at the time

This movie will never get old.
I can’t that they didn’t mention that this was a remake of the Jerry Lewis movie from the 60s
LOVE THIS MOVIE

This is one of the funniest scenes ever filmed. The rest of the movie was not bad also.
Something I don’t get why people have started to hate this movie recently, it’s a good comedy with a good message.
Because some people have grown offended by the notion that any movie that addresses obesity in a way that’s less that flattering is unworthy.
Of all the movies where Eddie Murphy plays more than one role, this movie is the ONLY time where it worked! :)
BOWFINGER was good too.
Coming to America was another good one. But I agree he had so much different personalities with every family member that this was definitely the strongest where he played many roles.
if you were to show this to someone and not say a word about who plays the klumps, they would never ever suspect it was eddie murphy the entire time
