The main reason this movie worked as a remake is because everyone involved looks like they LIKED the original and are simply adding a new twist - making the Eddie Murphy (who always respected Lewis) version an alternative instead of a replacement or improvement. The message I get from most remakes is, "We're too cool for the original; here's what they should've done the first time around."
Speaking of the professor, I think more people identify with the Eddie Murphy version better than the original, a big guy trying lose weight to look better for the woman he loves. I get that many people are social awkward but when your both social awkward and overweight, it's even harder for someone to get a date!
It also works better as a statement on our society. Whilst both professors are academically brilliant, it counts for nought in a society that is very obsessed with image and presentation. To a casual observer, people would be less judgemental of the Lewis version, since a lot of his features are genetic, such as his teeth, his glasses, and his voice; they are beyond his control. But Murphy's version is one that invites a lot more criticism from the casual observer - his appearance is associated with laziness, gluttony, and a lack of self control, so many more people would be dismissive or hostile towards his plight, simply because of that. And it definitely has its roots in his own insecurities - after a lecture where he has made a bit of a fool of himself, he immediately tucks into a Snickers, it shows he does comfort eat, a natural reaction to being embarrassed. Where Lewis' insecurity only really manifests because of genuine bullies, like the student and the dean, Murphy's insecurity comes from a lot of people, not just the bullies.
I don't think the problem with most modern remakes is that they didn't like the original. I think its often because they liked the original TOO MUCH and were scared of making changes that would offend its fanbase. See: the Robo-Cop remake and the King Kong remake for very good examples of this.

"Don't some of you wish you could do that to Dave Chappelle?" Way ahead of you, Critic. Only my line would be "Let me play you out!" followed by tossing him in the piano.
Dave Chappelle had good reasons to leave: 1) A lot of people were taking his jokes at face-value, to the point of Dave realizing he was becoming the very thing he was mocking, much to his horror and disgust. 2) Comedy Central execs were sticking their noses in where they didn't belong WAY too often for Chappele's liking. 3) Pressure to keep the show going, with the co-creator ignoring the above problems despite Chappelle's protests. 4) CC airing a bunch of "lost episodes" despite promising Chappelle that they wouldn't.
And now Comedy Central these days relies heavily on political comedy and a comedian who mocks other videos on the internet while re-doing some of them in his birthday suit as well as insulting people who are fans of certain things because he's a celebrity and he can do that.
The 1st one was honestly the straw that broke the Camel's back. I remember Chappelle after his "Hiatus" said about the show "People were laughing at the wrong things I wanted them to laugh at the Racists, instead they were laughing at the racism"
2014 wasn't a remake, it was a sequel to the original like Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla 1985. It changed the origin, but otherwise took the same track as Godzilla 2000 in terms of alternate sequel.
Geoffrey Sorkin Actually Godzilla 2014 has no connections to the original 1954 movie. This is evidenced by the fact that the Legendary Godzilla never attacked Tokyo in 1954, as well as the fact that he’s had his powers since the time of his birth in the Permian Period instead of receiving them after being irradiated by H-bomb testing in the 1950s. Godzilla 2014, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters are all part of one separate universe and continuity.

I also think the fat suite helps in helping you to think they ARE two separate people, where the Lewis version is just a costume and hair change it is literally not possible that the Lewis versions’ love interest can’t see the prof. as buddy love it’s a costume change nothing more. But with murphy nobody could believe it’s the professor why, it takes YEARS to lose that kind of weight not 3 minutes or whatever it was
fun fact: there is also an animated version of the nutty professor that serves as an unofficial sequel with the main character being Harold kelp, the grandson of Julius kelp of the original film, voiced by drake bell. And yes that is as forgettable as it sounds.
When he brought up the cool jerk, am I the only one who thought of Uncle Frank singing in the shower? GET OUTTA HERE YA NOSEY LITTLE PERVERT OR I'M GONNA SLAP YOU SILLY!
One common random ground: Both actresses who played Sherman/Julius's love interest went on to play characters who suffered painful unfortunate agonizing deaths: Stella Stevens: The Poseidon Adventure. Jada Pinkett Smith: Scream 2.
I agree about the ending undercutting the entire morale of the movie. Shortly after Miss Purdie says she wants Julius, she turns and we see the bottles in her back pocket, indicating that she wants both Julius and Buddy. Plus, the sequel to the Lewis movie shows that Buddy was a permanent part of Kelp (he switches between the two with no need to use the potion).
Murphy´s version was the "safe version" but for that it probably won as it was more consistent. It also had the correct amount of "rollercoaster". Meaning it played really well on the emotional side ( I believe I even got teary eyed during some moment of the film) and had enough slapstick to keep it a comedy, so it had a good balance of comedy with a message at the end of "be yourself". Kind of like a reverse romcom with emphasis on comedy so a comrom? On 2 days of a week, Lewis would win if you liked a certain element of a film more. It was more wild, it had more to it, more variation, obviously also being the source material. It did feel a little like Murphy´s version was the "original safe" choice and Lewis tried to one up it though by doing a rehash, not the other way around. Then again I saw Lewises version later than Murphys.
Nobody ever comments on Lewis's family in the original. The flashback to the parents, and their role reversal at the end, we're my favourite scenes. ' Idiot! Can't you eat with your mouth closed?' ' Not until I get something in it Dearest ' LOVE that!
When I was 5, I saw Nutty Prof in the theater with my older sisters and a crowd of kids. The transformation scene caused half the kids to flee the theater in terror. No kidding. We were traumatized. My sister had nightmares for weeks.
Old vs New episodes I wish Doug had done: Charlotte’s Web (1973 animated vs 2006 live-action) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1988 BBC miniseries vs 2005 Walden Media & Disney film) Little Shop of Horrors (1960 Roger Corman film vs 1986 Frank Oz musical) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 vs 1978) Imitation of Life (1934 vs 1959) Seven Samurai (1954) vs The Magnificent Seven (1962)
When I was a kid, I first saw the Eddie Murphy version & thought that one was the original one whereas I would later watch the original one with Jerry Lewis & think that one was the remake.
The irony is that your criticism of Buddy is exactly how he was supposed to be. You were supposed to know that something was off. Everybody did. But nobody in the film could identify just what was wrong. In the context of when the film was made it was exactly what should have been done. And student/teacher relationships were scrutinised a little differently. These were adults...not kids who could be intimidated by a bully teacher. Women/students weren't all victims. Today everybody seems to be a victim.
I remember I watched this movie with my parents at the theater when I was 7 years old and that "Godzilla" dream scene of the professor turning giant and attacking buildings gave me nightmares for a very long time.
Something I love about these old OvN’s is that you can tell Critic really likes (if not loves) both versions of the movies (Willy Wonka vs. Charlie aside), and has fun comparing them. The newer OvN’s don’t, they just feel like Critic is liking one thing the other and complaining about the other. Another person has to give out the positives for the original.
Given how much he harps on Eddie Murphy, I honestly expected him to show bias towards the Jerry Lewis version, like what he did with the Willy Wonka movies
Can you do more old vs new episodes please? These are very intriguing and entertaining. Do episodes on Cape Fear, The Longest yard, A Night to Remember/Titanic, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre please.
Well you can argue Buddy or Sherman’s own insecurity is the antagonist/villain. Both provide obstacles for the main character. I don’t know maybe I’m splitting hairs.

"that b*tch from peanuts" Lol. I died. 😂😂
Lucy was the bigger *itch than peppermint patty
Yea....Chappelle stopped his show because the whole point of it went over the heads of everybody.
I wanna check out the Jerry Lewis version now
+Kelsey Menges Glad you like Gloomy Doom.
digitivortex Youre like the third one on my comments that pointed it out lol.:)
One common random ground:
Both actresses who played Sherman/Julius's love interest went on to play characters who suffered painful unfortunate agonizing deaths:
Stella Stevens: The Poseidon Adventure.
Jada Pinkett Smith:
Scream 2.
I think this is the first re-upload that I didn't already saw.
See*
+Jakharr Vinta I wasn't seen it either. Despite see the other ones he make.
+Tsuyara wut
+Tsuyara *cringe*
RIP Jerry Lewis.
I think the ending joke could've been a little funnire if Patty's parents were actually complaining.
Lucy was the bigger *itch than peppermint patty
Aye Wasn't expecting JonMastu to be here XD
0:40 that’s as rare in Hollywood as an good sequel.
16:13, I was waiting for that scene :P
Nostalgia critic has done a LOT of stuff, man. I bet before he dies, he will think only of Family, Friends and UA-cam.
+PieNinjaProductions | Gaming and IRL! And the Doug theme.
digitivortex And don't forget....

when Dave was telling the jokes about Murphy I wanted to just reschedule out and give him a hug my vote for character is Eddie
Anyone watching this in honor of Jerry Lewis? Well I am. Thumb up if you want to honor him.
I honored Jerry Lewis because nobody can’t beat the classics
R.i.p., mr. Lewis!
In back to the future, doc brown jokes that Jerry Lewis is vice president to ronald reagan!
Lol!
i honor Jerry Lewis too
He truly is squidward 17:04
'"let me get my clarinet so we can have a proper conversation," CLARINET!!!!
13:00 OMG Professor Frink
Story - Jerry Lewis
Supporting cast - Jerry Lewis
Main character - Jerry Lewis
Winner - Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lewis...is dead?!
Poever Yes, I'm afraid so.
Nobody ever comments on Lewis's family in the original. The flashback to the parents, and their role reversal at the end, we're my favourite scenes. ' Idiot! Can't you eat with your mouth closed?' ' Not until I get something in it Dearest ' LOVE that!
Jerry Lewis has a special place in my rose tinted nostalgia goggles and I can't help but love the old one more.
When I was 5, I saw Nutty Prof in the theater with my older sisters and a crowd of kids. The transformation scene caused half the kids to flee the theater in terror. No kidding. We were traumatized. My sister had nightmares for weeks.
Which one the Lewis or Murphy version
@6:04-6:10
NC: Explain Movie, EXPLAIN!!
(Tiny Micro Nuke Happens on his head)
NC: Oh Good, that was just a Little one.
Old vs New episodes I wish Doug had done:
Charlotte’s Web (1973 animated vs 2006 live-action)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1988 BBC miniseries vs 2005 Walden Media & Disney film)
Little Shop of Horrors (1960 Roger Corman film vs 1986 Frank Oz musical)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 vs 1978)
Imitation of Life (1934 vs 1959)
Seven Samurai (1954) vs The Magnificent Seven (1962)

Oh, Hi, Benzaie !
... Watcha' doin' out of the Hard Corner ?
(If you're not french, you probably won't get that)
Yeah. I actually laughed out loud when Jerry jumped away.
That was great.
When I was a kid, I first saw the Eddie Murphy version & thought that one was the original one whereas I would later watch the original one with Jerry Lewis & think that one was the remake.
2:49 The hardcorner in a nostagia critic video !? WOW 😂
2:48 OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THAT
I think when she blurs out it means that he’s not listening
I had a highschool science teacher who was bullied into quitting, he only worked here for a year.
"Thank you very much I'm fatter
Flattered"
-Eddie Murphy
I haven't seen the original in so long, I really need to revisit it.
Yes, that was the best come back ever!!!... I feel so god every time I watch it.
Eddie Murphy never would have made his film if the Lewis version hadn't been so beloved. Points to Lewis for originality.
Yet when people say Nutty Professor, we think of Eddie's
Eddie loved the film. He has said it was the 1 film that made him want to be a comedian
I can already tell that neither the original nor the remake are hard to choose.
Given how much he harps on Eddie Murphy, I honestly expected him to show bias towards the Jerry Lewis version, like what he did with the Willy Wonka movies
The Nutty Professor Franchise (1963-present)
Box Office: $856.8 million
I think Peppermint Patty and Doug Dated
Well it would explain his distaste for her
+Jimmy Estrada Wouldn't it be funny if Doug ws in the Peanuts movie? :)
No that was Patty Mayonnaise....
Terrible joke I know
+YBH If you hadn't said it, I would've.
Omg I was looking for this
i didn't even know the knutty professor was a remake either, i always thought eddie murphy's version was the only one. pretty cool
That ending though... "WHO TALKS LIKE THAT?!?"
According to the late great Schultz, as a kid we often saw parent talk as gibberish
I think the old version’s main character’s voice sounds like professor Frank’s voice from the Simpsosns
It’s what the guy who voices Professor Frink based the voice off of.
The new one wins because of the professor's family.
10:39 I have a hard time believing those aren't two separate cuts where the emotional transition occurs.
5:32 I think it's supposed to be his glasses fogging up
