I never laugh when I watch Pryor's concert films. I just stare in awe and feel the pain in his story telling. I love many of his films he acted in and laugh a lot but not his concerts. Those just fascinate me.
Richard Pryor's first film was The Busy Body in 1967, NOT Lady Sings the Blues (sorry Gene). However, nice to see a S/O to Adios Amigos. VERY underrated film!
I honestly don't care, but I'm surprised they didn't bleep the "other" f-word. I kept thinking it would cut away, then when it didn't, they'd bleep it, but nope. There it is. Definitely a reflection of the time and what could be broadcast.
Siskel talking about Pryor not being as willing to be as risky and softening as he gets older. Okay, well, enough of that, let's talk about Eddie Murphy!
Really astute of Roger Ebert in looking at how Murphy and Pryor were both having to team up with white actors to establish stardom and would need to break away from that and become the leads not the sidekicks. Later Murphy would release Beverly Hills Cop which was his starring vehicle and then later Coming To America which was an black ensemble cast that he was the lead for. And then of course Murphy had flops ( Vampire In Brooklyn, Beverly Hills Cop III, Pluto Nash, I Spy) but also major hits ( The Nutty Professor, Life, Shrek, Bowfinger, Dream Girls to name a few) and over all did it on his own as a lead not a sidekick. Its really great to see how Murphy was able to break out even from this strong point in his career and establish himself as one of the great icons of the movie screen. Pryor unfortunately did not have much left after Stir Crazy and Silver Streak due to Parkinsons and couldn't capitalize. Overall this was an incredible episode and a great tribute to both men,
"The Toy" and "Brewsters Millions" were not Pryors best movies but they were the movies that happened to be the most current at the time that i was growing up and had cable and i watched them both all the time, they werent his best but i thought they were perfectly good funny films. i dont know what year this episode is from but i sort of seems like i remember them both not giving the best review to "Beverly Hills Cop" which must have been not long after this.
It's hard to blame either on of them on any career choices. I'd be hard pressed to turn down the dump trucks full of money that they keep delivering to these two guys' front yards. I mean Pryor made 5 time more money for Superman III than Christopher Reeve did.
Silver Streak is an absolute much watch. The movie is a love letter to Hitchcock.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Two legendary comic geniuses

Yeah, that just surprised me too

With both destined for some VERY hard times after their 1980s heights....

Pryor later admitted they paid him very well. SUPERMAN III, awful,. but a $3 million payday!
They took out the audio of the SNL skit.
I don't remember exactly what happen. I upload a lot of old episodes of S&E but Often, that's the option when there's a copyright claim.
"Beverly Hills Cop" proved Roger right!
Murphy was definitely in better movies

Not quite. Just double. Reeve got $1 million, Richard got $3 million.
Liked 48 Hours and Stir Crazy.
Didn’t like Silver Streak or The Toy.
Honestly have never seen Trading Places.
Trading Places is a classic 👌
Wouldnt they be disappointed by Murphy's awful career. The man is funny, but a movie with him has not made me laugh in decades.
I never liked either one of them.
And Pryor's career never took a chance after Superman III....
Silver Streak and 48 HRS are good action/comedy films, but Stir Crazy & Trading Places are just hilarious
The Toy is still unfunny.... ugh.
