Nothing better than randomly opening up UA-cam and seeing that someone has uploaded a new old or old new Siskel & Ebert episode. Thank you for keeping the memory of these guys alive. I’m a huge Danny DeVito fan but Other People’s Money is one of his movies I haven’t seen. My grandfather had it on VHS and I never watched it smh

I saw Ernest Scared Stupid in the theater when I was 11. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but I still enjoy it, and other Ernest movies

Yeah, the way they gave the movie a hard time brings back memories of disagreeing with these two.

Other People’s Money is a great movie and is one of DeVito’s best performances. His “Amen” speech at the end is so memorable and relatable today.

I just watched it on HBOMAX for the first time. I liked it. Danny DeVito is great in it. What surprised me was the drama toward the end. Gregory Peck is at the end of his rope and DeVito doesn’t back down. That was a bold move for a Hollywood movie to conclude. So I don’t know what they’re talking about when they call the ending soft. I guess because it shows hope for a relationship between DeVito and Penelope Ann Miller.

Yeah one of these days I’d like to see the original intended ending, but was satisfied with the one provided. Didn’t seem out of place.

@@wowview2 well maybe it’s the final scene that they are talking about because he does make a deal with Penelope Ann Miller where he does sell the shares back to Gregory Peck but he gained something else in return.

I just finished watching "Other People's Money" (thanks UA-cam for making it free in Feb 2023) and I'm trying to find this "original ending" from Norman Jewison -- you know, the one that Roger said bombed with the test audiences for being "too depressing". It may have never made it to laserdisc, but is there any plot synopsis of this "original ending"? I'm even having a hard time to find it by Googling it.

Roger nails the review. The Ernest movies are not “good” movies, but when you’re a little kid they are very entertaining!
I dug into Jim Verney’s history a few years back. Despite being a chain smoker he always spoke out against it, would never allow himself to be filmed smoking, and told kids never to smoke. Sadly, he died young of lung cancer :(

One of Leigh's best movies, one of Sayles' best and a re-release of one of Cassavetes' best; this was a pretty good week.

That line about a nation of dropouts is holding up well. Attended a couple years of college recently and was shocked to see how the classes shrunk throughout the semesters. Lot of dropping out.

Ernest movies were great for kids. They wouldn’t hold a kids attention for a second these days. But in the late 80’s and early 90’s I loved them.

Other People's Money was a love story?! Penelope Ann Miller rejects Danny DeVito's character at every turn, but seems to reluctantly put up with his sexual harassment to make a business deal.
