  • The Chinese Automaker Changing the Market in Africa | China/Africa Big Business | Business Documentary from 2013
    Episode 5: Moving Africa
In this fourth episode, we look into how Chinese automaker BAW is changing the market in South Africa. In the second part of the video, we follow how Chinese companies are working on rebuilding infrastructure in Angola.
This series looks at how big Chinese enterprises have found a foothold in Africa, how they’ve often had to adapt their approach and strategies to fit the African market, and how Chinese and African employers, employees and business partners have learned from and influenced one another.

You have a job, but so many other Pakistani don't and they will not into the future when your country becomes a colony to China. You have to understand that no other country can provide development and prosperity for another nation. No one did it for the Chinese, and the Chinese will not do it for you either. The Chinese are in your country for their own interest and the longer you can depend on them, the better. So you should rise up and pull up yourselves by your own boots strap. The problem with developing countries is that they want to jump from where they are, to enjoy 1st world statues without earning and paying for it as they progress.

You are correct about that, China has never had a colonial history but human history has taught us that, all human behaves the same way, given them the wright opportunity to dominate and lord over any other group. When people talk about colonization in the modern era, they don't reflect on that in the past. They are referring on the fact that, a powerful country as China can, and will use their loans to control a debtor nation politically, economically, and cultural for their own interest, and not for the debtor's interest. The CEO nailed it at the beginning when he said people who think Chinese product are "low quality" are incorrect. What people don't understand about economics is that it isn't a question of "Made in China" or anywhere else for that matter as such perceptions used to be popular with Japanese products who were thought of as inferior when Japan began its manufacturing renaissance post world war 2, mainly because they were "cheap". Well things are "cheap" because the market demands low cost products since that is what most people can afford. The same people who complain Chinese products are "low quality" are the same stingy people who refuse to pay a few bucks more for a quality brand made from better materials. First, I must commend China or the Chinese business men who've thought of doing this. Creating and expanding Automotive Businesses all over. This will help both Chinese and Ghana to grow economically, for example.
Secondly, it will help the nations to grow and be self-sufficient. All the people who would be unemployed are now busy creating a life for themselves and families. You've chosen well China, and for that I commend you along with those You've put in charge. I like their patience, and mannerism toward the employees. The employees, are very grateful for the opportunity to work with you and your colleagues to better their country. Other developing countries, who are very wealthy could do the same thing, if human conflict weren't standing in their ways.

If some developed countries before only want the agriculture products from your country your ppl can only be farmers forever. But now if you can be trained as an engineer just be quick to learn. Everyone knows the profit difference between a hi-tech product and corns. I strongly believe Africa will stand up one day and get the top of the advanced manufacture.

And in some countries, they even bring in their Chinese workers in constructions instead of letting locals work for them. How's that fair? With China too, they want cheap labour and in Australia, we have laws of standard minimum wage. It's much easier for them to exploit smaller, developing countries.

From my own experience of trying to establish a farm tractor manufacturing facility in various African countries, the bitter lesson is that contrary to what African leaders and politicians say they all prefer importation over local manufacture because importation allows the payment of (commissions) outside the country. Sub-Saharan Africa is falling so far behind even emerging economies that I would argue it is already too late to stop the decline.

People criticise China for the BRI, but this project is really difficult to realise and if successful it will bring prosperity to the world, its essential for the development of all the countries where it goes. The reason is China has a big interest that other countries prosper it will insure China prosperity too. It's logical, this is the reason we should not believe the west trying to antagonise China. We must unite to keep the world moving in the right direction.

I am very happy that our companies invest not only in business but also the local society. But I do not make sure, whether our companies and government understand the meaning of infrastructure and what they are doing to the local region. The infrastructure is not just a business, indeed it is the vital precondition for the growth of one country. Without the infrastructure they absolutely do not need to talk about the development. It is just like the blood artery to the human. So it is absolutely the New Life for this region.
We can not do it for everyone. Such project can only be done or created for the country, which makes sense for us. So the question is, what is the return? Only mining? the local government can be changed anytime or per 4 years. How can we protect our interest? it is very tough question, but we must focus on our core interest.
Maybe I have lived for too long time in Europe. But I really get such feeling that our companies do not correctly understand the value/meaning of there performance or work to the local region. Nobody else will do it for Africa, but China. But I really think, our companies do not know it!! And our managers are so nice, so fair, even a little bit naive! Only making money through the project is totally cheap price, compared to the meaning of such project to the region. They need to reconsider their strategies again!
We don't need to save the whole world, but we need to focus on our interest. No reason to shame on it!
