I followed your instruction and used a cutoff wheel to grind back both top corners of the diffuser and the sound was gone!!!! Thank you so much! Mine sounded like a huge fog horn every morning! Was so annoying! Thank you!
I had that vibration on a replacement burner. The gas feed line was bent more to slow the flow and that corrected the noise. Hard to believe, but it worked
Your a good man, thanks for the share . They should have sent you a new assembly even tho you would have to fix it to more than likely. Shame on them for ordering you to get a plumber.
Thank you soo much! I just bought a brand new AO Smith with the exact same set up and same darn sound. I hope bending the bracket back is all I need to do!
@@carolineboydston4936 It's insane. I filed a BBB complaint and they offered me an exchange. I took it hoping the newer one would not make the noise. It does, but to a lesser degree. NEVER touch an AO Smith again. I don't care if the others are twice the price!
I have a brand new ao Smith that sounds like a fog horn as well. After I installed it and fired it up for the first time I was amazed how loud it was I shut it off. Then I fired it up again and the same thing. I figured that maybe it would go away after heating and cooling (break in). I am on day two and it hasn't stopped yet so I may have to give it a try. Thanks for the video and researching it too figure it out. I have a bad feeling that a lot of the now mandatory low NOx water heaters are going to do this.
Todd....curious....did you get rid of your noise? New AO Smith water heater installed last weekend and have the foghorn noise as well. Really don't wanna tear it apart yet so curious if you got rid of the noise? THANKS!
I just installed a A O Smith and have this problem. They will send a authorized plumber from 30 miles away to fix it. I would do it, but it is under warranty, so am not going to touch it.
@@wernerblumer1823 I just had mine fixed last week. It had exact noise. Removed burner and bent bracket in back and put burner back in ... and been going a week noise-free
Just bought a water heater and installed it over the weekend. With the first turn on it made this noise.. I will definitely try to bend the bracket and see if that works. Thanks!
Hey glad you know your way around dangerous stuff am actually jealous But so you know you could have gotten the company to pay your plumber if you wanted to go to court I understand it's a long process and they bank on that Another thing is home insurance on appliances A third is life warranty on appliances I know it sucks to pay money but only if you can In the end this country is built so you that you either know your way around fixing things on your own or you know your way around the court and legal system Again kudos to you!
I called and they sent a new burner assembly via mail in 2 days. Heater was in warranty, but the gas valve was flashing code 6, bad burner assembly. I turned off the heater and lit the pilot light to clear the code, but it made all sorts of loose metal sounds (not a vibration) and the flame glowed from bright to dim. Probably in addition to the burner crumbling apart, the air supply filter on the bottom is clogged.
i have been in my new apartment for like 3 weeks or so and I started to hear this sound like the first week. I told my apt office it was like a horn sound coming from my water heater and she said she was gonna get to it but she hasnt bc we have had rain a lot and some apts are dealing with flooding if they live on the bottom floor but she said she will as soon as they get to the water issues. but she informed me that if i ever lose hot water to notify her immediately and i said so far its working good. but then after a week it stopped for a week and now its back at it twice a day. im notifying her today of it. how long will this sound go before the burner stops working and i lose hot water?
Do you only need a sediment trap somewhere along the gas supply piping? My furnace and water heater both have sediment traps near the inlet, and the manual specifically indicated a sediment trap. Or is it because you gas is flowing "up the line" instead of "down the line" as in my home.
My 4 years old Reliance heater burner is exactly the same as yours. My problem is loud Boom sound and rattle loud noise inside . Is that the same scenario in your case?
I keep hearing something very similar to this under the floor every once in a while. But also while hearing water flow through a pipe when I put my ear to the floor, and immediately after it goes quiet, what sounds like a ball dropping. Can't find anything online about it. This is the closest I've gotten so far.
As a licensed plumber I would not suggest cutting or altering any part of a water heater. Call the water heater company for a warranty replacement if not order a replacement part.
That is the ultra low nox burner on that unit. Maybe try adding a down pipe from that T&P relief valve so you don't get a face full of very hot water if it opens. Typical homeowner with way too much time on his hands. I bet he is an engineer who thinks he knows everything.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!!! 👌

Me too, can't spend $700 and expect stuff to work right i guess.

Same thing here . Installed it brand new and exactly as you described
Awesome video! Thank You for explaining this - I’ll sleep better tonight!

Hey. I was wondering if bending the bracket worked?
@@Blackwatermoss FYI... bending bracket fixed it in my case
Is he talking about pushing backer the two small brackets behind the burner?

Skip to 14:00 where he finally tells the root cause. Then skip to 16:15 where he finally says what he did.

Thanks You so much sir. My does the same thing and it wakes me up when my dad turn on the water. I am gonna try it tomorrow.
I have the same problem and my question is, other than being annoying, is there a danger here? Thanks in advance.

Do you think spot welding the defuser on the front and back could fix the noise problem?
So is the vibration dangerous at all? What if I didn’t fix it?

Mine makes a big noise as well. Only when the burners are coming on. Like for a few second it makes this loud sound.

What to do if screen has hole in it...? Do we need to replace the entire burner assembly?
5:10 You got harness with red and white which is thermocouple and black 2 wire for limit switch. not vise versa my friend.
Ao smith has the same problem. Thanks
Instead of bending the feed line ..Close the feed valve slightly to reduce the flow..

Thanks for sharing, but my god this could've easily been a 2 minute video.
Let me know what you think.
I just replaced mine yesterday $800 and it's making the same sound
I have almost the exact model -- my top of burner has a hole in it
then you had to replace the screen
Thank. I hace. Proyecto to be done
no dirt pocket required lol

We are referring to the gas port burner portion of the gas heater. Not the water or the relief valve u know it all DUMBASS!
