  • The Sacramento region is built on race covenants that prevented people of color from living or purchasing property in certain neighborhoods. The impact can still be seen today in Oak Park and Land Park. This is part one of a four-part series.

I moved to Sacramento in 2016 and worked as a Lyft driver, as I would drive around the various neighborhoods and downtown, I would notice the amazing discrepancies in wealth and poverty (poverty unlike I had ever seen before), I came from the Bay Area as my point of reference. North HIghlands, Del Paso Heights, South Sacramento were some of the worst, what I found truly amazing was in all these areas of extreme poverty, there would be little pockets of great wealth, huge homes (usually gated) .....I remember, I was looking at some real estate magazines and became interested in buying a house in Oak Park, the ad was very well presented and attractive, but made little mention of the surrounding area...which after picking up passengers in that area I found to be less than desirable, for me....I find this video extremely interesting, it should be required viewing for everyone in Sacramento....Thanks.

It's horrible. Oak Park is my neighborhood. Pure trash now. Oak Park is the most notorious neighborhood in jail.

Glad to see this being covered. Too many people walking around wondering why they have so much, while others have so little. This is important and very educational. I'm looking forward to part two.

There are important historical reasons for segregation in different neighborhoods. But more recently, as the speaker alluded to: there was the 2008 crash, and massive transfer of ownership via wealthy investors, aka gentrification. Currently, assisted by the pandemic, modest middle-class neighborhoods are being changed again by huge numbers of corporate investors, some of whom took government loans meant for homeowners. This needs more media attention.

Media or not, corporations have all the money they need to bribe… oops sorry, lobby the government. Honestly there is nothing that can be done, in the government’s perspective this is perfect investment opportunity for the wealthier people coming from the Bay Area and other areas. Wealthier residents means more tax revenue. The poor people suffer the most as always. Breaking the cycle starts with education. Capitalism at its finest.

Exactly! I lived in Oak Park during the 1990s til 2017. I saw the real estate crash. I saw the MANY homes boarded up, like a ghost town. And I'm seeing investors buying property and property values rise astronomically. In 2015:there were lofts going for$350,000 on north side of Broadway at 35th across from the tire shop.

Yep. My mom & dad could have lived anywhere back then, they both had great jobs and made very good money. When the time came for them to purchase a home they were only shown homes in oak park and the south area.

Yeah. Understand the story and thank for the informations. But the point is what you gonna do about it. The history tell facts in the past. Now thing change over time. I actually see many Asian family move in and live in land park neighborhood. With all the rule and restrictions in real estate business nowadays things get easier. I know the normal person just looking for something better and safer. It is human being.

I really understand the topic. Of course just like the upper class kid will have more advantages than the others. But things change over time with will. Not easy but possible. It need the big heart to do. For example what if the group of successful 2 or 3 generation decides not to buy or live in land park neighborhood and live and built some place nearby. Then literally thing will change. Look at elk grove or Vinyard. It is new development and not bad.

My grandfather came from China with nothing in 1929. He wasn’t allowed to buy north of Sutterville in old Land Park in the late 40’s. With hard work and not dwelling in the past he and my grandmother passed on a way of life that made everyone after them modestly successful. It wasn’t lines in a map. It was just hard work.
