Well done, Ian. Coming along very well indeed. That engine is so CUTE!! Great that Miss Hubnut is helping organize the bolts. Without that system you would triple the time just figuring out which bolt goes where, which always leads to the biggest questions, "Where does this bolt go? What do you mean we have to pull the engine to get it in???"
Excellent progress has been made. In the past, I've made a temporary clutch aligning tools by wrapping electrical tape around a deep-reach socket to fit the spigot bearing and then lots of tape further back along the socket so it fits the clutch plate. The key is to always have rolls of electrical tape in your tool box!
I really enjoyed watching this. Miss Hubnut has pushed you a bit to take it on but she makes the job go much more smoothly. Reminds me of Eeyore and Piglet.
Great work! Top marks for Miss HubNut labelling everything! Nothing worse than coming back weeks later and having to spend plenty of time sifting through bolts and getting them mixed up🙂 Not too much longer till the first start!
Thanks for the video, Ian. Marvellous to see the Daihatsu coming together. This takes your tinkering to a new level, well done! It gives inspiration to many, and also proved that labelling parts is very useful.
My go-to clutch alignment tool is a long bolt with the appropriate amount of masking tape wrapped round. Infinitely adjustable. 😁 Great to see the progress.
My go-to tool was a half inch socket set extension bar with a varying amount of electrical tape wrapped around it! Think I will follow your idea of using masking tape in future, sounds a bit less expensive. 😃
Miss Hubnut did an amazing job cleaning/bagging everything, it's going to be the most cared for Charade in the uk, Hopefully many many happy miles to come!! throughly enjoyed this series so far!
I am glad to see the majority of the engine work is now done on Chemmy the Charade. Also that Miss Hubnut is a great assistant mechanic & it also helps having a workshop manual. I look forward to seeing the final episode with Chemmy the Charade up & running.
I would never have thought that learning to drive in Myrtle would be difficult, but look at it this way, the Daihatsu will feel a lot easier. I did my driving lessons in a knackered diesel Corsa, and after I got my license, switching to my petrol BX was like driving silk
I learned to drive on a 1972 Dodge Dart sedan. That is a car about the size of Betty, but with the famous and infamous Leaning Tower of Power, the 225 Slant Six. It did have an automatic gearbox, but unassisted recirculating ball steering and fabulously ineffective unassisted 4 wheel drum brakes. Hard to believe but we were brave enough in 1979 to drive that from here in Southern Ontario to Banff, Alberta in the Rocky Mountains! That is 2,500 miles each way, or 35 hours of driving time.
Yep just get Miss hub nut to move around all the cars that she is happy to do to build up confidence , jumping from one to another you learn to adapt to each cars idiosyncrasy's on the fly , means you can drive anything .
If its loose the clutch alignment tool. Try wrapping insulation tape around the alignment tool end until its snug fitting take up play for ultra accuracy. 16:03 😀 Scary when wearing head phones. Great progress
Miss HubNut has the learner driver stance down 100%. Bolt upright, four inches from the windscreen and with an appropriate air gap between the seat and her back.
When I was regularly killing Holden 3 speed gearboxes, I ended up stripping the input shaft out of a dead one to use as a clutch alignment tool. When I did an engine swap on my Mazda I put the clutch assembly on and half tightened it all up, then offered up the gearbox so it lined itself all up, then tightened it all up while it was in place. It's definitely easier with the right tools.
The engine is in and Miss Hubnut is a big help she is a Godsend can't wait for the next installment hopefully next video the Daihatsu will be driving around and Miss Hubnut will be learning to drive again
Packs of interlocking foam mats, with a chequer plate pattern on the top... They're 15 quid or similar at Halfords, I use them just for laying on when crawling about under cars, they're brill.
I owned a NEW Daihatsu Charade in 1982 - a nice little car(for 1982!), right up to the point that it made fatal contact with a milk float(clue - very heavy.....!)
Ian dumps old engine on floor - me thinks oil is bound to leak. Ten minutes later in the video Miss Hubnut is cleaning up oil flowing onto floor from old engine! One must wonder if Miss Hubnut ever tires of cleaning up after Mr Hubnut? (probably). But it was great to see you both working together to get the replacement engine in, really hope it's a good one and you can get the car back on the road once more.
Bolt up all the large ancillaries while you have the free room to them (eg: water pump, pulleys, starter motor and alternator plus engine mounts) and exhaust manifold with front down pipe. Everything else is accessible when in that way.
Super job, both of you worked as a team. BTW love Miss HubNut's pink hair. I finish work for good tomorrow and promise to at least try to lend you a hand and many workshop tips 👍
I would have fitted the engine THEN swap the sumps over both then up in the air and easy swaps. Good to see some progress though most admirable mrs hubnut getting stuck in 👍🇬🇧
You should have a sense of achievement. That is a great milestone. I remember that feeling after you get the new engine in, even though it isn't running yet. I thought I had heard all the automotive Britishisms but you have sprung a new one on me. The spigot bearing in America is a pilot bearing. One wonders how things get to be named so differently. Anyway, crossing my fingers that all works out well.
For couple of dollars / pounds it is well worth replacing the spigot bearing if it is actually a bearing as nothing worse than having it all back together and finding the spigot bearing is dry or noisy.
I simply love the two of you working on this. Keep them coming those vids. Kudos to mrs HubNut love the hands on approach 🤎🤎 Stop apologizing 🤣🤣 more than one video a week... You two are almost a production facility 🙂 Have mercy on yourselves 🤎
When Miss Hubnut said, "As opposed tothe ones (bolts) that were free range ", I nearly choked on my tea!!
Miss Hubnut certainly using her muscles pushing two & pumping the engine hoist. She is a great help & she is lovely
Wow, genuinely very impressed with you both! Fantastic progress. I'm crossing everything that it runs ok and can't wait to see the next instalment.
I massively support a full rollout of Miss Hubnuts bag and label system 🙂
What a team you both are. I can tell Miss HubNut is happy you've finally got it in.
Great Job for both of you on changing the engine. I am cheering you on form across the pond. I can't wait to hear the new engine start.
Excellent progress has been made. "Rusty on the outside, but beautiful inside".
I can relate to that!
Well done folks!
I accidentally skipped while talking to the dog. I looked back at the screen and wondered what was going on! Now I know Mrs H was helping
My go-to clutch alignment tool is a long bolt with the appropriate amount of masking tape wrapped round. Infinitely adjustable. 😁 Great to see the progress.
Funny enough for me it was part of stainless pipe from a shower assembly. Also adjusted with the appropriate amount of tape...😂
And for me it is an an old punch with tape....
And for me it's the ol' eyeball.
The first clutch I did was on a Fiat 500F. I used a budgie perch, packed out with insulating tape to fit.
You two are great together. Long May it continue.
As The Rock says
" Finally "
Love the patience from you both well done on this never ending progress 👏👏👏
Well done to you both for getting the engine back in, a really enjoyable video, looking forward to Miss Hubnut turning the key on the Charade.
I am glad to see the majority of the engine work is now done on Chemmy the Charade. Also that Miss Hubnut is a great assistant mechanic & it also helps having a workshop manual. I look forward to seeing the final episode with Chemmy the Charade up & running.
Miss Hubnut is turning out to be a most useful mechanic's accessory. She was a worthwhile investment 👍
I would never have thought that learning to drive in Myrtle would be difficult, but look at it this way, the Daihatsu will feel a lot easier. I did my driving lessons in a knackered diesel Corsa, and after I got my license, switching to my petrol BX was like driving silk

Love watching you both working together. Best wishes to you and Family Ian.
Wow, huge amount of progress! Looking forward to seeing this start up, and hopefully being a non smoker.
Great to see progress. The fleet seems to be progressing to a great state this year and the Berlingo will prove to be worth its weight in oil.
You two would be stars of the F1 pit lane!
Great, long awaited video, you work together well - good on you Miss Hubnut 👍
By the time the Daihatsu Charade is back on the road it will be classed as a Historic Vehicle and be MoT Exempt! :P
Yea of little faith!
@@vladimirskitchen1820 Only joking 🙂
Imagine the feeling of achievement you'll get when she starts and runs... hopefully 🙃
it will make a better video if it does'nt 😁
Great video Ian . Really loved this one … and Ms Hubnut is an absolute star , the way she just gets stuck in and grafts along with you . 👍
Cracking, liked that, great to see you back messing around with the tools again!
Great progress and teamwork. We almost saw some Hub butt at one point too
Great to see the engine in.Happy days. All the best to you all
Yep just get Miss hub nut to move around all the cars that she is happy to do to build up confidence , jumping from one to another you learn to adapt to each cars idiosyncrasy's on the fly , means you can drive anything .
Watching you guys work in hoodies and coats at the end of May while I roast in 93°F weather today makes men slightly jealous.
Good work takes time. You learn a lot about how a car works, completely different from a 2CV. And now wait for the engine to start.
Great work you two. That would have been challenging on your own. 🏴
If its loose the clutch alignment tool. Try wrapping insulation tape around the alignment tool end until its snug fitting take up play for ultra accuracy.
16:03 😀 Scary when wearing head phones.
Great progress
Good job, nearly there! Won't be long to it's running
These are by far your best type of videos - so nice to see some progress well done
Miss HubNut has the learner driver stance down 100%. Bolt upright, four inches from the windscreen and with an appropriate air gap between the seat and her back.
To be fair, it's not really worth moving the seat just to move the car a little, and she has very short legs...
@@HubNut Yes true! I hadn't realised she didn't move the seat, I just thought she was sat like every other learner driver does 😄
When I was regularly killing Holden 3 speed gearboxes, I ended up stripping the input shaft out of a dead one to use as a clutch alignment tool. When I did an engine swap on my Mazda I put the clutch assembly on and half tightened it all up, then offered up the gearbox so it lined itself all up, then tightened it all up while it was in place. Well done to the both of you. Quite an undertaking.
Primer. Waxoyl. Am I really on the HubNut channel? 😂 Great to see progress with Chemmy, can't wait to hear her fire into life again.
Packs of interlocking foam mats, with a chequer plate pattern on the top... They're 15 quid or similar at Halfords, I use them just for laying on when crawling about under cars, they're brill.

Congratulations Ian this is progressing well. You make a great team!
Stop waffling Ian 😂
Diggin the aging wheels shirt!
Bloody well done on getting this far.
What a brilliant team you make. Poetry in motion.
do not forget to swap out filter and fill with oil prior to any sort of start
Congratulations on your first engine swap! I'm sure it will work lovely once its all hooked up
First transverse engine swap. Foxanne and Elly have both had engines fitted. Quite a few of them in Elly's case...
Well done both of you.
Let’s hope A it runs and B it doesn’t smoke.
Good times.
Bolt up all the large ancillaries while you have the free room to them (eg: water pump, pulleys, starter motor and alternator plus engine mounts) and exhaust manifold with front down pipe. Everything else is accessible when in that way.
The real Hubnut is back.
Well done on getting the engine back in! Looking forward to seeing Chemmy start up and drive!
Bravo to you both! 👍 Must be really satisfying to make a major step forward.
Looking promising. Well done guys. What a team.
This was great to watch, has taken some time but a good project nonetheless. Really enjoy seeing Mrs HubNut joining in and learning too.
' long hard Strokes ... '
Gotta love the Hubnuts x
Progress is a good thing. What a team you two are.
I haven't a clue what was going on (I'm no mechanic) - but it's great to see this coming together. Looking forward to the next installment.
I'm talking to your insurer and make sure Miss HubNut will drive the other cars!!! yes it will happen.
Love watching you guy Ian
Well done! What team work! Very pleased that you are making progress
Super job, both of you worked as a team. BTW love Miss HubNut's pink hair.
I finish work for good tomorrow and promise to at least try to lend you a hand and many workshop tips 👍
‘Nice long strokes’ - I nearly snorted tea down my nose………..🤣😂🤣
Ambitious project goes well. Good job.
It's a good idea to try the clutchplate on the input shaft first, just in case it doesn't fit, it wouldn't be the first one to be boxed wrong.
Feeling of relief is immense
another great video has always Ian and miss hubnut and hublets and hubmutts👍
Top effort by the A team! 👍
For future reference. Old brake fluid gets RTV silicone off.
Great progress on the Charade. Will be a good start up video, top stuff. Best wishes.
Congratulations, well done, both of you !
90 days, not bad!
Fingers crossed 🤞 Miss HubNut!
Love the sense of humour despite the hard work!
Brilliant video Ian 👍 you are brilliant at what you do Ian 👍
I would have fitted the engine THEN swap the sumps over both then up in the air and easy swaps. Good to see some progress though most admirable mrs hubnut getting stuck in 👍🇬🇧
Great Teamwork - hopefully one fully sorted Charade
Great job, you'd be lost without Mrs hub nut & her muscles 👍❤️it
Well done both of you. Fantastic team work. 👍👍👍🇬🇧🏴
Fantastic progress on chemmy and keep up the great content and work 👏 👍
I will cry if clouds of blue smoke come out of the exhaust when you start it 😵💫
So will I...
Back on it. Like sonic. Love it.
Hello I am so glad you are almost finished with chemmy engine swap and I your editing skills are very good aswell
Make sure it has oil in before starting it
For couple of dollars / pounds it is well worth replacing the spigot bearing if it is actually a bearing as nothing worse than having it all back together and finding the spigot bearing is dry or noisy.
Great progress, well done both of you.
Great work with the engine swap.
One new product for the shop would be "Hub Nut" undies. Seeing you flash them enough might as well advertise, haha.
Or HubNut belts...
Oooh I like Miss Hubnut's hair! :) Nice colour!
Really enjoyed this video - can't wait for the next instalment!
The drama. The editing. The cliff-hanger ending, still.
Awesome! Great job both! Team work makes the dream work!
It's in! Well done, both of you!👍
Progress, success and the next time: click, click and vrooooooommmmm! Good job guys!!! See ya... 👍🙃👍
well done you 2 for getting this far
well done, and this would be a relationship challenge for many couples, so you better be proud
Great progress, hope it runs!
I simply love the two of you working on this.
Keep them coming those vids.
Kudos to mrs HubNut love the hands on approach 🤎🤎
