    No bench space… I’m stuck with my Lansky sharpening kit. This looks very nice, though.

      @@RazorSharpMuenchen The way the knife is held in the jig is incorrect. Its parallel with the spine of the knife and its supposed to be parallel with the cutting edge. Imagine a straight line between the point and the base of the heel and align it to that. You can see how he is fighting against the stone much more than necessary to cut the angle the way he wants.

    You should not lift the jigg at the end. Roll it instead.

    Please excuse my comment.
    I have a Tormec T8, and there is a shaft that restrains the rotation of the leather wheel. It is constantly clicking, and at the same time, the axis is repeatedly moving back and forth, and the vibration is transmitted to the entire body of the machine. I have asked the dealer and the manufacturer and they say it is within normal limits.
    Does your Tormek have similar symptoms?

    I recently bought Tormek T8. Based strictly on my theoretical anticipated use, I bought a second support bar. My intention was to use it for guided (as opposed to free-hand) honing, setting up in horizontal mount to match grinding angle by making appropriate compensation for different diameter of honing wheel. The isea is to leave the knife or other tool in the jig for both grinding and honing, until removing it for final deburring of back face. Is there good reason to abandon this proposed guided method, or does it make sense, even if viewed as overkill from some perspectives?

    • @jesmondo5785
      @jesmondo5785 Рік тому

      Definitely not overkill. Sharpening is a precision process and needs to be treated as such. Freehand is risky business on the honing wheel.
      I personally run mine with two wheels. 320 grit in the bath and 1200 grit on the right I then move to stropping on paddles for accuracy. As I get very consistent, efficient and good results.
      Stick with your process in my opinion! Sounds awesome

      @@jesmondo5785 Thank you for your feedback. Actually, my process is working out just as intended. I particularly like the extended support bar for grinding. (I am carpenter, so mostly deal with chisels and plane irons at 25 degrees.) The bar extends far enough to left of grindstone so I can slide jig over and spin it around to inspect grinding progress without removing jig from bar. Then on to the honing wheel with its own bar already pre-set to matching honing angle. Feels very efficient and minimizes fiddling around and potential attendant errors.

      @@michael.schuler nice! Glad it's working well. My next purchase is going to be the extended support bar, I'm sharpening almost exclusively kitchen knives and with the extension to get the extra wheel on I could do with some extra length...
      Yeah that makes sense, sounds like a pretty slick process. Tormek make great sharpening systems but with some thought and slight adapting they can be amazing!
      The only issue I found was the knife jig hits the support when trying to strop with the support on the horizontal. May need to rethink that!
      Cheers!

      @@jesmondo5785 I've sharpened my tools with decent success for decades using high speed grinder and Arkansas stones. The one aspect of the Tormek wet grinding method that I didn't appreciate fully actually until using it is how absolutely stress-free the process is. Not a chance ever to burn an edge. And the leather honing wheel and polishing compound pretty much eliminate need to hone on stones altogether. I bought T8 strictly for my carpentry business use, but I've ended up buying knife and scissor sharpening jigs as well. As I move further into semi-retirement, at least from on site finish work, it strikes me that adding a local knife sharpening sideline would be a low cost way to bring in some extra income when the warranty on more of my body parts runs out...

    I’m a blacksmith in Kentucky who makes custom knives on occasion and I still don’t have a Tormak!! Lol why do you?? Seems like a pricey investment for somebody who doesn’t do this for a living. Also, you didn’t get these from the Indonesian wonder KH did ya?
