Jim McVicker: A Way of Seeing

  • This is a documentary film from 2008 about a true artist, the American painter Jim McVicker, who lives and works in the wild and woolly landscape of California's "Lost Coast:" The Pacific coast of Humboldt County, just south of the Oregon border. A largely roadless, sparsely populated zone of giant trees and salty little towns.
The film is an exploration of Jim McVicker's world, and a tribute to his work. We follow the painter as he works in the places he loves: The meadows, forests, harbors, the little weatherbeaten towns, and the ragged sea-cliffs of Humboldt County. The scenery is entrancing, and watching this painter as he drinks it in, and then translates it into his own artistic language, is a joy. The film then goes further, and strives for a deeper understanding of the bond between this remarkable artist and his astonishing native ground.
Jim McVicker: A Way of Seeing, is a beautiful and touching film about a way of life, and a realm of beauty, that have not yet vanished from the world.

I yearn to watch Jim Mc Vicker paint a full painting, seeing his palette and brush strokes. I don’t have money or ability to go on a workshop so this short video is a few minutes’ viewing of priceless gem. This feels like being close to God while Creation is being loved. Beverley Schmidt

I knew Jim McVicker when he was a young artist. He lived in Ontario California. He was friends with my now deceased husband Jim Schuit . We greatly admired Jim. My Jim was a gifted sculptor. I hope to meet Jim someday so we can commensurate. Carol Schuit

No artist, and landscape painter, has ever been so inspirational as Jim McVicker has been to me. My son, Brigham, died 4 years ago, and we were very close. After his death I did not paint for 4 years. It is because of Jim's work that he has inspired me to paint again. And painting has been great therapy for me. I owe a lot to Jim. For if it were not for his wonderful art, I would have given up on life, and left this world. In reality, he, and painting, saved my life.

Im so envious of this skill to be able to paint realistically. Im a painter but I cant do realism. People tell me that im lucky to have the gift of imagination and composing from my mind. But I wish I could do what this man does. Yes I won the regional art prize and the judge said he hates paintings from photographs. So well done and such great paintings.

Jim McVicker is one of the best!
He is best not just in oil but also watercolor, not just in landscapes and still-life but also portraits. Jim McVicker paints time lapse watercolor portrait seems to be his only watercolor demo in UA-cam. It is the best example of how watercolor portrait should be painted- spontaneous, loose and quick!!!

Such incredible skill. And he shows what we see with our eyes with such precision. I kind of find an innocence in this as he does not put in an abstract interpretation. The question is always what is art. And I like it that his art is what the eye see.

I feel a kinship with Jim McVicker, his intensity and passion and connectedness to nature is exactly how I feel when I approach nature. Sometimes my classical training can get in the way of natural spontaneity. I now feel that I can approach plein air painting with confidence, now. Thank you, Jim. Nice work, really nice work.

There is so much in this story, I'll have to watch it again. It was good to hear him say that sometimes he hates what he is working on and has to push through that until it comes to a place where it is working again. I feel like that at some point in every painting.

I'm an artist still wondering when I'll find my niche. You paint what you see. You're so right that painting takes a lot of energy and is hard work. I'm going to try painting your way. I always felt that the light changing had serious effects and you confirmed it. You and Monet that is. Thanks for affirming many things that I wondered about. Thank you

Kudos to a rarity - an honest painter. I hope Mr. McVicker has rights of reproduction, as financially original painting sales alone may not generate the funds he deserves. How a man like this, who's worked for decades to paint from life, with neither pretense nor cynicism, can be overlooked by the many desperate but naive persons drawn to the manipulative kitsch like T Kincade cranked out is a sad testament to general public ignorance of what art can be.
