Jim McVicker: A Way of Seeing

- This is a documentary film from 2008 about a true artist, the American painter Jim McVicker, who lives and works in the wild and woolly landscape of California's "Lost Coast:" The Pacific coast of Humboldt County, just south of the Oregon border. A largely roadless, sparsely populated zone of giant trees and salty little towns.
The film is an exploration of Jim McVicker's world, and a tribute to his work. We follow the painter as he works in the places he loves: The meadows, forests, harbors, the little weatherbeaten towns, and the ragged sea-cliffs of Humboldt County. The scenery is entrancing, and watching this painter as he drinks it in, and then translates it into his own artistic language, is a joy. The film then goes further, and strives for a deeper understanding of the bond between this remarkable artist and his astonishing native ground.
Jim McVicker: A Way of Seeing, is a beautiful and touching film about a way of life, and a realm of beauty, that have not yet vanished from the world.

I yearn to watch Jim Mc Vicker paint a full painting, seeing his palette and brush strokes. I don’t have money or ability to go on a workshop so this short video is a few minutes’ viewing of priceless gem. This feels like being close to God while Creation is being loved. Beverley Schmidt
He is AMAZING painter congratukation for magnificent extreme marvels in the canvas.thankyou for all this Beauty wonders.
I love the painting of the model sitting in the chair. I think this one really works.
I knew Jim McVicker when he was a young artist. He lived in Ontario California. He was friends with my now deceased husband Jim Schuit . We greatly admired Jim. My Jim was a gifted sculptor. I hope to meet Jim someday so we can commensurate. Carol Schuit
No artist, and landscape painter, has ever been so inspirational as Jim McVicker has been to me. My son, Brigham, died 4 years ago, and we were very close. After his death I did not paint for 4 years. It is because of Jim's work that he has inspired me to paint again. And painting has been great therapy for me. I owe a lot to Jim. For if it were not for his wonderful art, I would have given up on life, and left this world. In reality, he, and painting, saved my life.
I am happy for you on taking that next step. I'm sure it was hard to move on. They are gone, but never forgotten.
I'm sorry about your loss, Ace Robst.
Keep painting, Ace. Thank you for sharing.
Ace Robst agreed
Hope your doing ok
Im so envious of this skill to be able to paint realistically. Im a painter but I cant do realism. People tell me that im lucky to have the gift of imagination and composing from my mind. But I wish I could do what this man does. Yes I won the regional art prize and the judge said he hates paintings from photographs. So well done and such great paintings.
A gentle and inspiring film about a man and his work. Thank you.
Jim McVicker is one of the best!
He is best not just in oil but also watercolor, not just in landscapes and still-life but also portraits. Jim McVicker paints time lapse watercolor portrait seems to be his only watercolor demo in UA-cam. It is the best example of how watercolor portrait should be painted- spontaneous, loose and quick!!!
Excellent film, which packed in a lot of information without bludgeoning you with it.
Love this video, great job!
Such incredible skill. And he shows what we see with our eyes with such precision. I kind of find an innocence in this as he does not put in an abstract interpretation. The question is always what is art. And I like it that his art is what the eye see.
What a lucky man to have found what fills his soul with completeness. So comfortable with his place in this world. His reason for existing...how many can say that?
This was such a beautiful inspiring video. Thank you.
Jim McVicker is the kind of artist I want to be when I grow up.
Come now, you can't do both :)
Watching this film has inspired me try painting from the landscape itself as opposed to painting from photos. Jim's way of life and his love for painting is wonderful.
Well done all, great camera work, chatty interviews, nice variety, solid pro production - and as for Jim - he's BRILLIANT!
Masterful.
Thank you Jim for bringing inspiration to everyone....blessings to you.
Jim is an absolute natural! They are all so realistic as if you were in the presence of whatever he is painting. They are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing the beauty you see Jim. I want to be a painter/artist and paint learn how to paint as you do.
Thank you all for watching this video and all your comments. It's greatly appreciated.
You are the one in the world, you did very dificult tecnic really not easy.GOD bless you
I feel a kinship with Jim McVicker, his intensity and passion and connectedness to nature is exactly how I feel when I approach nature. Sometimes my classical training can get in the way of natural spontaneity. I now feel that I can approach plein air painting with confidence, now. Thank you, Jim. Nice work, really nice work.
Wow! Really moved by his life and his paintings. They were so pure ! Really gifted and hardworking!
One of THE BEST painter's vids on youtube.
l have a slide with Van Hock and McVicker painting on the bottens of Arcata in 1977.Those were very good times, the people used to call them the blue and purple painters as they used a lot of these colours.
What an inspiring story, truly a master with a voice of his own. His work speaks volumes - thanks for sharing his work.
A great film, a gifted painter and just very inspiring. Thank you!
There is so much in this story, I'll have to watch it again. It was good to hear him say that sometimes he hates what he is working on and has to push through that until it comes to a place where it is working again. I feel like that at some point in every painting.
When I get bogged down I just move to another painting, this gives the mind a rest. In a week or so, I'll come back refreshed. No forcing myself needed...just fun (nearly)all the way!
A second viewing of this and always inspiring me to keep trying. Thanks Jim
So inspiring story - love this video. Beauty is in simple things that is all around us, Jim McVicker see these things and create awesome masterpieces.
Beautifully shot and narrated, and excellent artwork. Loved the whole thing. Awesome. A must for anybody interested in plein air, or art in general.
Ive only just heard of Jim through a podcast, what an amazing and beautiful movie. So inspiring
Jim McVicker is a truly dedicated artist... I'll give you applause :)
Jim, youre an inspiration for the next generation with your love for painting.
I've been a fan of Mr McVicker's artwork since the year he did a watercolour live painting of a trash talker friend of his. I was convinced from that day onwards. He is REAL!
when the talk about "air" they mean light and atmosphere. This artist really has a skill in subtitles of light...excellent.
Yes what you do is incredibly hard work so well done. Im a painter not of your type but I really admire what you do.
This was a beautiful experience for me. Thanks for documenting and sharing.
Marvelous. Thank you for posting.
His landscape work on scene is very immediate. Like a quick draw cowboy shooter. Very loose and confident. The best combination for any artist.
Thanks so very much for this video, really enjoyed it! You, Jim McVicker, are a fabulous artist!
Calling this man’s work “almost photographic” is an insult of the highest order. They are lifelike and possess a beauty that a photograph can never capture.
Beautiful! Inspirational. Thank you Jim
Jim .
Thanks MUCHO ! As always it's life at the moment & the Painters individual response & how he or she is excited to express it .
All the Best to both of you

Great film!
This video film is great! I like the way of this artist's painting. He really paints what he sees in real life and tries to depict all the nature beautites. Thanks a lot1
I suggest you to visit Isle of Skye in Scotland and Iceland. You'll find many amazing landscapes in those countries.
Jim, I just met George while we were painting at Plein Air Vermont. He's invited me to come up and paint his area of NY. I'm looking forward to joining the "tradition." Inspiring work and video thanks!
Chad
Inspiring, thank thank you
I’m very inspired to get outside and paint now!
wonderful doc thank you. Learned some things!
Extremely enjoyed the presentation.
Thanks for sharing...
Nice work Jim!
Great insight into an accomplished artist. Its helpful for artists to see other talent approaching and solving the painting process.
Amazing
Nice paintings , he looks like a realist painter , depicting the nature as it is and with a little twist of
Impressionistic Colors of course, he is a great artist , as he can paint as well portraits ....see you
one day in California !Hi From Canada - Montreal .
Lovely documentary.....fantastic work. Congratulations!!
thanks for the great quality...good video as well..really great.
I love this... It reminds me of artist Aureliano de Beruete y Moret... I really think you are a great painter, with the essence of the real artist
fantastico!!!
this was very nice. thanx
Patrick's point. Trinidad. Neat
Wow!
Vídeo incrível!!!
Wonderful documentary. Makes me wonder why I am not outside painting. It has been years since I have done any plein air painting.
No words...you've put in your time...you are beautiful and the video is well, well done.
I'm an artist still wondering when I'll find my niche. You paint what you see. You're so right that painting takes a lot of energy and is hard work. I'm going to try painting your way. I always felt that the light changing had serious effects and you confirmed it. You and Monet that is. Thanks for affirming many things that I wondered about. Thank you
Kudos to a rarity - an honest painter. I hope Mr. McVicker has rights of reproduction, as financially original painting sales alone may not generate the funds he deserves. How a man like this, who's worked for decades to paint from life, with neither pretense nor cynicism, can be overlooked by the many desperate but naive persons drawn to the manipulative kitsch like T Kincade cranked out is a sad testament to general public ignorance of what art can be.
z1522 T Kincaid had his marketing team and his time which has now past. His stuff has devalued because of mass production.
@z1552 you mad that the people wanted T Kincade? Manipulative kitsch, huh? They were works non the less and works that the people wanted. So what does your comment say about you?
i love it and want to see some more paintings of your...
OIL PAINTING IS A PLEASURE, A CLIMAX
Très beau reportage je ne comprends pas tout mais l' émotion et Mme talent. Parle pour moi c est très joli et me donne envie de me lancer aussi bonjour de la France et du Finistère en Bretagne Béatrice
I was unaware of his work. He captures the ambience of the setting so elegantly. A fellow artist friend of mine posted the link to this video. I am grateful that he did. Very inspirational video and wonderful work.
One of my art school friends does just what McVickers mentions…The result is that paintings are beautiful but the work is staid and too formulaic.
Wonder what his real job is when he is not painting. Beautiful!
Wow
it is a very good work . I live in Chile and like to paint
I liked the paintings, but I would have liked to see more of the sweet little donkey.
I know that great painter actually don't do such things... But I really wold love to see a kind of tutorial... would be fantastic!!!!
too bad he'll never be around to see the comments lol. he's outside somewhere
Fantastic video.. original.. i'm agree with artmother5.
