Profile of Joseph Paquet
Joseph Paquet was born in 1962 in Patterson New Jersey to hard-working parents of immigrant stock. His father Jim was a railroad man, working as an ironworker, dock builder & mason that also painted and carved wood and stone. His mother Theresa was a homemaker and craftsperson who sewed and knitted.
His childhood was one of being outdoors: wondering, wandering and daydreaming.
“It’s a great irony to now get paid for those things which got me into trouble when I was a kid,” Joe says.
He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and credits artist-instructors John Foote, David Palladini, James McMullan with inspiring his deep love of drawing.
Later he studied with John Phillip Osborne in Ridgewood New Jersey and was introduced to the Prismatic Palette. Joe states, “John opened a new world for me and set me on a path to painting outdoors - it was incredibly life changing.”
Paquet’s philosophy is one rooted in deep connection and sensitivity to his subjects.
He says, “Because I work directly from nature, each painting is a chunk of my life - a piece of me and record of my experience on this earth.”
Joe was the subject of the October 1995 Washington Post Sunday Magazine feature article. He’s also been featured in the March 2004 issue of American Artist magazine and the July 2005 issue of PleinAir magazine.

Joe is my brother, older by two years. I've seen him interviewed before and it's cool because I get insights that even knowing him for well over 50 years I haven't learned. I too am inspired by the aesthetics of the space in which I work which is why I'm building my studio in an old church. Nice interview, Jeff.
I love Joe's attitude. Especially about Instagram. The Reels and artists touching up their final paintings for the world to see...' entertainment artists'. All B.S! I'd love to take a course with Joe. He appears to be the REAL DEAL!! His work shows.
Tender, patient observation... keys to the kingdom. Beautiful conversation. Thank you.💖
Guys spot on with a lot of whats wrong with modern society, I love watercolor painting but people keep telling me
"Oh you should learn oil painting you'll make more money"
"Oh you should learn to paint more like Zoseph.Z"
"Pssh watercolors are for kids"
Like.. no buzz off I love watercolour, and my style speaks to me. I'm doing this because I love it not for money
Thank you for including names and photos of the paintings that were being mentioned, it's very helpful! Such deep discussion! As always!
Joe draws a hard line for us all to follow but he's correct every time.
Very interesting pod cast. Beautiful paintings with a meaning.
Joe is high on my list of favorite painters now! I need to watch this again a couple of times just to catch all the wisdom he dropped! Phenomenal!!
Thank you!
Such an Amazing interview!!! 👏
“Chunky little kids with wings everywhere” 🤣
Ok, I now know who I want to be when I grow up! Geez, those are some damn fine paintings! Thanks to both of you for this discussion.
Great interview Jeff. Love the spirit between the two of you. I’m off to sign up for a PaguetJoe workshop!
Could I listen to Joe for hours and hours… definitely!
Excellent interview!! And so inspiring!! I want to say this one is my favorite because it speaks to my soul, and stirs within me the desire to humbly pursue this love I have. Thank you both!!
This was a great podcast for me. So many little tidbits that are and will
be super helpful in improving my personal work. I had heard a number of my artist friends extoling Joe Paquet and his wisdom - yep it was true!! thanks.
Thank you, Jeff! This interview with Mr. Joe Paquet has made my day. This podcast has provided me the information on skill set improvement and more inspiration for furthering my painting progress.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Joe you are amazing artist. Thank you for sharing . Jeff keep up the amazing interviews.
Thanks for this Jeff. It was really helpful in furthering my interest as a painter. Joe is a great teacher and artist who consistently delivers brilliance in both areas. 👏🙂
Another interesting interview. Thanks for doing these.
What a great, thoughtful conversation. So many amazing insights and truth nuggets shared.
Thanks! Joe has so much to offer. He’s brilliant.
@@jshpaint agreed. I'll probably watch this one again just to absorb more.
Thank you
what a great interview! so much knowledge shared. I appreciate the effort you put into adding images and for your thoughtful questions.
Thanks so much! It was a lot of work so I’m so glad you appreciated it.
Another extremely insightful and interesting interview. Great job, Jeff, this feels more like a conversation than an interview. I enjoy it so much. Keep it up!
Great interview Jeff and the shared knowledge is truly good stuff!!!! CONGRATS!!! What I do not like at all is the undermining of others, am referring to Joe Paquet mentioning David and art equipment . I think both mentions are OUTSTANDING in their respective knowledge and understanding!!!.
Oh JOE! Great interview-so inspiring in the true meaning of the word. Gives me heart-thank you both for your sensitive conversation.
You are so welcome! I really enjoy it.
My pleasure- thank you for listening
Joe gave a wealth of knowledge and advice throughout the video, not just at the end. Maybe things we have heard before in another way. Joe was thought provoking, and backed it up with his paintings. Great work! Man, to imagine the possibilities next time I paint. Thank you all.
You’re welcome! Joe is a fountain of knowledge for sure.
Many thanks for an inspiring podcast.
Our pleasure!
Awsome. Joe's work is great! Also nice to see bit more light shining on landscape painting as well. It's such a huge part of traditional painting yet it gets all too little love and attention. Keep it up! Great stuff, enjoyed it alot! Will definitely subscribe to begin with!
Thanks for subscribing! Joe is amazing. I've got many more to come.
This is an awesome interview. What an interesting conversation. Great stuff, and is essential in my own artistic journey. Very inspiring.
Brilliant. Learned so much in such a short time. I’m inspired.
Joe has so much good stuff to say.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful, in-depth interview. I am a beginner en plein air painter. I am 63 and I just hope that I can paint long enough to put some of this information to use! I can see that I have a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I believe that you may go out playing there for a few hours but all that detail and all that work that's accomplished in one of those big pictures you would have had to colada studio time !!!!!!!....🤔
I would love to see us work and haven't seen it as of yet maybe near to the end of this video that shows some of his work. I would love to see it
Love Joe, doesn't baffle with bs.
Watched it twice. Really great stuff. Love Joe’s fundamentalist attitude - so refreshing.
Tremendous messages and with philosophies for living❤
What a great interview! Thank you both!
Thank YOU for your comment. I’m glad you like the podcast!
Thank you
What an informative and inspiring discussion! Thanks so much!
I'm looking for a bumper sticker that says, "Caution! I brake for scenery!" I tell friends, "You almost lost me. I passed two ponds on my way here!"
I apologize for my phone it's not dictating my quotes right correction I haven't seen any of his work as of yet. Would like to see please. Thank you
You forgot to go back to that quote that was over his doorway to his studio. Oops..
I was halfway watching interview with Casey Baugh and it disappeared switched to Joe Paquet ?
Yes sir correct me if I'm wrong. What you're saying is you don't have a technique? I was thinking about myself if I was to try to teach somebody how to paint I couldn't do it ....(I don't have a technique) that I know of , (I just paint).... I keep thinking there's a basic of how to start a painting then the rest of it is personal like teaching somebody how to write ,should I say ,how we ( learn ) how to write everybody's handwriting is different....😊
I'm wondering if a person tries to paint a scene, and they dramatically change it. For those that's never seen the location how would they know that it was dramatically changed beard and what does it matter if a person doesn't know it's been dramatically changed?... I'm confused here, help me .Ty
Love the guy, but let’s be honest we’re all Frankenstein painters. Just saying
I'm confused here I understood you to say but not to add or take away or fill in with an imagination moving trees or moving this or moving that just paint what you see. Yet on the forest scene you talked about moving the trees here and moving the trees there. So I understand you did change it. forward or back whatever's... so I understand that you did change tell me your paintings as the forest and the one of the road that goes nowhere.??.... that painting tha that was shown of the silos... how did you accomplish that in a plane Air day... all those lines all that detail add you accomplish that in playing are?
Of course this interview is not about me. But I paint I tried to paint exactly what I see and I was criticized for. Comet please. Thank you
Aren't you respect sir. But I understand you to say one thing and then say another. ?????...
