Bishop Barron on the Power of the Cross

- I recorded this video as the Christian world enters into the holiest and most spiritually intense time of the year. The long season of Lent has prepared us to delve once more into the mystery of the dying and rising of the Lord Jesus. As I have been contemplating the events of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, my mind has turned, again and again, to the brute fact of pain. Please watch and share!

Now I understand why the Catholic Church cherishes Faith and Reason. Thank you Bishop Barron🙏🏻
Awesome!
@@josephboyat-bt1jf, the problem is you're too much judgemental but you're unfortunately less aware of the true reality of the Catholic Faith. If you really want to understand what is the Catholic Church, you may start by following Bishop Robert Barron *VERY WELL* then you'll understand *HOPEFULLY* .
@Zen Monk, *may you provide the whole reference where Saint Thomas Aquinas stated so, please* . Meanwhile, do not judge things you do not understand at all, please. Why not learn and read about Catholic Faith at first then you'll know what to say about it?

How prophetic, Bishop Barron. Thirty years ago today our 4 1/2 year old daughter passed from Leukemia. I can't tell you how much your Ministry has touched my life. God bless you! And Happy Easter!
Al, I cannot say I can comprehend the pain you and your wife would have gone thru on the loss of your child, I can only imagine and know that it would be extremely painful. I have no words of wisdom to make sense of it all. All I can do is to stand with you and pray for you.
God bless you. And have a very happy Easter!
i can not imagine pain you been through, im sorry for your loss..I will say a prayer for your daughter right now, she is with our Lord up there
prayers for you and all you hold close
Al Eriksen God bless you and your family. God bless your daughter who passed away.
5:15 reminds me of the quote that the real test of a character is not on how you prepare for situations to be right but on how you react when everything goes wrong.

A new one!!! Yes! I miss those books in the background. Happy Holy Week and Good Friday Bishop Barron!!!!
I have been waiting for a new one! I'm addicted to bishop Barrons videos❤🙏❤🙏
I will listen again at least once without a doubt! I just want to share this: what about circumstance when no one is to blame for the pain? No one actually causes that pain to happen either directly or as a catalyst? I have my own brain and spirit answer but am curious about others. What a great teacher this man is Bshp Barron thank you.
Plot twist : they're not even real. Books 😂😂😂 thank you Bishop Barron, we missed you greatly

Good morning Michelle. What a good question. What kind of pain are you referring to?
@@mi-ka-eltheguardian3837 For instance, physical pain caused by disease or health condition...I suppose one can turn to the question of sufferring. You can blame others and rightly so sometimes for an act or lack of acting to cause other types of pain but not so with disease like say ALS or Huntingtons disease, Parkinsons and on and on. Regardless I am a full believer of the risen Christ and catholic faith.
Thank you for that great video. I am a baptized Christian converting to Catholic and your videos and books have been a great inspiration and wealth of knowledge. I hope everyone has a terrific Holy Week.

Beautiful ,beautiful explanation Bishop Barron. Thank you. Happy and Peaceful Easter. Bishop Barron.
Pain is so basic and understandable. Sin is linked to pain. Jesus took every kind of pain on cross and overcame the pain in a way the pain won’t ever mess with him or those in again. Jesus overcame sin.

Buenos días ! Gracias querido Padre Rober!
Concise. Thoughtful. Beautiful. True. Bishop, your words lead hearts and minds through the gorgeous landscape of The Gospels arriving directly at the foot of our Savior, Jesus. I thank you for leaning into and shining a light on the most fundamental of human conditions, pain, and showing us that all-important, unbroken line we have to the pain experienced by Jesus Christ who endured it as both fully man and fully God.
As we reach the climax of the celebration of The Lord’s Passion, may He bless you and keep you and continue to inspire your important ministry.
So good.
This post really spoke to me. Often I have thought - yes, Jesus suffered horribly for a few days, but there are people who endure pain and suffering for years - decades - lifetimes. Forgive me, sometimes I have minimized Jesus’ suffering. Thinking a few days of horrible suffering would be easier than the trial of years of constant suffering. It’s easy to make Jesus a character in a story without appreciating the wholeness of his humanity. In addition to the excruciating physical pain of the cross, Jesus did suffer mental, spiritual, emotional pain - loneliness, betrayal by his friends and feeling abandoned from God- his Father. The pain of seeing his mother and friends suffering and grief at his death. He probably suffered the knowledge of the horrible sacrifice he would have to make throughout his lifetime. His mother surely knew. The important thing to remember that as God, he did not have to endure any of it. He could have opted out. He CHOSE to suffer FOR US. “For God so LOVED the world, that He gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Thank you again for much needed perspective. I see more clearly why the saints meditate on the cross so much; why stigmata is a grace of remembrance. To know God’s Love is real, we must dwell in Christ’s suffering AND that HE CHOSE IT - for LOVE OF US.
Thank you Bishop Baron for your wonderful message on the power of the Cross. It's a great incentive to live a Holy live. I remember you in my prayers as for my spiritual mentor.

Another insightful discussion on the vicissitudes of life and the pain this brings us. Richard Rohr put it well. Pain that is not transformed will be transferred and transmitted to others. Surely, this is what sin is, and the transformation of our brokenness is what resurrection means for us.
I agree - blessings
The difference between my two modern-day intellectual heroes, Bishop Barron and David Bentley Hart? Bishop Barron seeks out Jordan Peterson in charity to dialogue and share ideas. He recognizes a fellow well-intentioned man. Hart, on the other hand, mocks and ridicules Peterson like a jealous baby. I can’t stress how much respect I have for Bishop Barron. A true one-of-a-kind.
Mercy is the key to Love. I’ve been trying to imitate Christ as the Sun of Justice. I was manifesting qualities of vengeance, anger and retribution. That isn’t Justice. That is merely its shadow. I see now that suffering of the Sacred Heart on the cross gave God an infinite understanding and thus an infinite mercy welled up to meet it. He calls us to be instruments of that Mercy, that is truly the Just path. “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.” This an immense teaching. Bless you. 🙏🏻

That’s the thing about pain. It demands to be felt.
He's had conversation with Jordan Peterson, yes! I can't wait! I want nothing less than a 10 hour video from their discourse.
Love these videos. Could you please do one discussing eastern orthodox theology? I'm at a cross roads between Catholicism and Orthodoxy and it would mean so much to hear your insight Fr.Barron!
God Bless 🙏
Don't get sucked into Eastern "Orthodoxy" like I did. Big mistake and a waste of time. They're a false sect that rejects the Papacy and supremacy of jurisdiction conferred upon it by Christ. They make a distinction between God's essence and energies, saying that the former surpasses the latter and is without beginning while some of the energies are created and others uncreated yet are somehow both fully God, which means they believe in two distinct gods, thus breaking up the Trinity and teaching polytheism. They also reject the Filioque and allow divorce and remarriage, which is a contradiction of Christ's teaching in the Gospel, and they also deny the Immaculate Conception among other things. Check out these videos, they prove that Eastern "Orthodoxy" is not true Christianity.

... a great theologian, a modern day st. Dominic!
"Our sin comes from our own pain, if God's Mercy has wrapped up and conquered pain, then ...He's wrapped up and conquered sin." ... "The Divine Mercy is fundamentally basic, the Divine Mercy that accompanied our pain all the way down and enveloped it. And in that, we find our redemption." Christ suffered 3 types of human pain, but as God, God also experienced this pain but "wraps up" our sin as God is without sin, since sin means to be away from Him.
Wow. I’ve got some work to do in order to get my head wrapped around those last few sentences
The emptiness, loneliness, depression in ones life is lack of GOD in their life.
Susann Hartwig I disagree, sister, I am a Consecrated person and I suffer from depression. Its an illness. It has nothing to do with “lack of God”.
Yes and it’s a form of suffering among other: it is our cross.
When the saints suffer, does it mean they lack God? Suffering is meant to make us strong, virtuous and holier. It is even a sign that God is even closer to us.
Joan D Happy Easter and God bless you
Great talk as always!! I wonder if you could do a part two on suffering- lessons learned. Somehow our suffering gives us greater vision. Bishop Sheen used to say something to the effect- if you need wisdom or advice go to someone who is suffering, the greater the suffering the better the wisdom. Why does suffering a component of sin give us such great perspective?
Those suffering often act towards those not suffering as if they were the cause even if they are just living their life. Those in sin see an accusation by those not living in sin even if all they want is to live their life freely.
Pleased to see you return to your old format - I think short form communication is best for these sorts of issues when engaging with secular crowds or younger people, like myself, who have grown up with videos demanding shorter attention spans.
Interesting way of preaching to communities, he makes a contrast between the gospel and the social situations that every community experiences as part of daily life. He stablishes a relationship between the cross and common social sufferings. In a way Christianity is also political or at least it gathers people around political communities. The suffering of Jesus corresponds to the transgressions he supposedly committed and that was judged for, even the drink of vinegar and gail they gave to him while on the cross had a meaning and a purpose as part of histrial and punishment.
In Greek the word cross is translated as Post, a single and vertical post. And crucifixion is translated as the action of placing the post inside a hole in the groud.

Chris Jordan From what I've heard him say about Orthodoxy, he focuses on the role of suffering in redemption. That's basically what Catholics believe in too, except Orthodox folks live this truth better than most Catholics which is a shame. He doesn't say that Orthodox Trinity makes more sense, and local patriarchies than the Bishop of Rome. So, basically he could be Catholic.

If pain is in relation to sin then the Christ suffered not on the cross, for he is without sin, The Power of the Cross is to reveal sinless man, divine love for his enemy, thus forgive them father for they know not what they do,
To suffer as a murderer or a thief is one thing to suffer for love is another, if I am betrayed by someone whom I have trusted, then my suffering does not come from my betrayer, it comes due to my ignorance, and this is why so many people suffer, out of ignorance
Where your treasure is there your heart will be also, if you have your heart on what is perishable, when is perishes so does your heart.
This man speaks as one who knows not the spirit of God, or a relationship with him, if he is with God then being alone is meaningless, because he is Never alone, what is hellish about loneliness, a godless man.

When will the Jordan Peterson interview be released?
So you see suffering as the consequence of sin? I would be grateful if you could please elaborate on that idea I think I don’t fully understand it. Thank you very much.
Start by reading Genesis 3:17-19
Let's look at the prodigal son and the fall. Prodigal son lives with his father in his house as humanity (Adam & Eve) lived with God in the garden of Eden. Prodigal son claims inheritance and autonomy and leaves his father's house. Humanity claims autonomy by breaking God's command by eating the fruit and leave the garden as a consequence. The prodigal son is now away from home where he had everything he needed and suffers hunger after wasting his inheritance. Humanity is away from the garden, Paradise is our natural habitat. So we suffer a great hunger, a great pain because we are now in the wilderness.

Bishop, please find the real translation of Jesus's last words. I hope you will make a video on the Last word of Jesus with the correct translation.
Came across to me, in emphasis, that the cart was somewhat before the horse: because Christ experienced/resolved pain therefore sin was mercifully resolved. Isn't it rather that because He mercifully resolved the sin problem, pain was / is therefore resolved?
How do you understand the idea of pain, sin and suffering resolved as we still have pain, sin and suffering ?
I am not academic so i think of this language sort of as a mystery (dogma like) a sort of playing out of old testament prophecy. What I do take from it is that in my daily life, as I struggle with pain and suffering, if I link/offer them to Jesus and his suffering on the cross they become bearable. As for the resurrection it our great existintal hope.
Happy easter, Jesus is risen.
I would say that sin is “resolved” in the sense that it is forgiven on account of Christ’s death. And also in the sense that it’s power has been broken. We are no longer obligated, if you will, to sin. While I agree that physical pain will only be “resolved” upon death/being with the Lord, absent disobedience and perhaps ignorance of what Christ has done and does for us and my experience has been that all psychological and existential pain can be “resolved” here and now.
@@live2encourage thanks for that. Do you ever feel this supernatural claim is an arogand claim? I suppose the answer is yes but with that said it's a salvation open to all.
@@carlf2842 (I like your handle, BTW) "Do you ever feel this supernatural claim is an arrogant claim?" No, not anymore than any truth claim such as "The earth revolves around the sun" somehow is an arrogant thing to say to someone who doesn't believe it. It seems to me that truth claims made by anyone in any religion are not arrogant claims in and of themselves. It's people who get arrogant regarding what they happen to believe is true.
@@live2encourage And one last thing about your own Christian formation(i.e your belief in the resurrected Jesus) I am assuming catholic because of the Bishop but not necessarily?
Is it cultural, intellectual, a moment of grace, or grace of a life time. Or something else i am Just curious.
Thing are good always because God is in control.
I think you may have outdone yourself
Seeking a book or other media explanation: how does Christ take away sin & death when both are still with us? I can grasp Christ as the hero archetype -- worthy of emulation -- but when it comes to this resurrection as proof that *we* are absolved of sin/death...it's either more complicated than a 10 min video can cover or I'm hitting a barrier & can't see around it.
One has to understand the cross in light of the resurrection. That total event shows that God's love is greater than both sin and death.
@@BishopBarronThe resurrection acts as proof that Jesus' methods/teachings are the revised edition of the covenant, one based on love, along with works. This contrasts with the old covenant, merely going through the motions, with one's intention being to "earn my way," (obedience is all; intentions/love not relevant.) Sin and death persist, but they are, in the grand scheme of things, overcome by acting in this new way. Am I close?

Good but I needed just a little more elaboration. So God knows our pain? He is the ultimate empath? the ideal counsellor?
All these and more even. It is 'redemption' from the clutches of various kinds of pain it's debilitating power over us that Jesus obtained for us by his own suffering and death.
what about human beings that suffer even more pain than Jesus did?@@marypinakat8594
Hebrews 4:14-16
@@antidepressant11
I am not sure about the 'quantity' of pain to be compared with that which some other human beings may have undergone? I would think the mental and emotional pain is even worse than physical pain and when we take into account the setting, the humiliation and mocking by the enemies, the betrayal and abandoning by the closest, the sensitive frame of the sinless Son of Man indeed suffered the worst. If the son who always enjoyed the company of his Father God cried out 'why have you abandoned me?' there indeed was the maximum. Still the bigger picture is that because of what Jesus suffered he has obtained for humanity the power to be not defeated by pain but to find strength and stay afloat even in a sea of pain. The miracle ought to be the highlight and THAT is REDEMPTION.
I know it is not a suffering contest but there have been humans who have suffered more; emotionally, psychologically and existentially than Jesus did.@@crisislegacy1

9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.
