Who ever figured this out is a genius. Now I can tackle those patterns that start with chain 200. 😁
instablaster.
Chain 200 and keep a striaght line 😩
Exactly man.. and the headache of having to count the chain starting that says " do it in multiple of so much + so much"
Five years after you made this, it’s still the video that actually solves the tricky bits for nearly half a million of us: just where to put the hook into the “bottom” of the stitch.. Thank you!
This video is FANTASTIC! The way you explained the bottom base loop to stand ‘tall’ was the biggest tip, as my work was curving. THANK YOU!!!
Glad it was helpful : )
This is the first time I actually understood foundation chains. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤
Oh my gosh.. I have gone through several different videos trying to learn this stitch..... and thanks to you ...I FINALLY GOT IT!!! THANK YOU!!! I have 2 graduation afghans to make by June.. and the pattern I want to use requires this stitch.
Yes thank you! Figuring out where I'm supposed to insert hook for next fdc was so complicated even after like 3 videos but yours is like oh wow I didn't realize it was that easy. THANK YOU
Glad it helped!
I can’t even begin to thank you enough. I’ve watched so many other videos, and was doing it right but without truly being able to see and fully understand. My stitches were subpar and I am one of those people who wont move on until I reasonably perfect the technique and approve the results as good. Your use of larger yarn/hook along with your clear, concise directions has made the world of difference. My stitches are gorgeous and mine looks like yours. I am a solid beginner, with good beginning intermediate skills and you just became one of my favorite teachers. I am working on my 1st, basic blanket and this was the last part I needed to understand (using my beginner yarn) before jumping in with my project yarn. Thank you!
I am so glad you found the tutorial helpful!!
Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate that you use a large size hook and choose a background that is a good contrast colour to the yarn
This is my fourth video I’ve watched trying to learn FDC and it’s the first one that I could actually do myself. Thank you for the clear explanation!
I had no idea such a thing even existed (and I've been crocheting for over half a century)! Thank you so much.
Thank you for making foundation chains seem simple. I have been so confused by them and have suffered with chains being too tight. Because of you I am finally able to do half double and double foundation chains.
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve been crocheting since a little girl and I always forget how to start this stitch. Thank you so much. Love your enthusiasm, a great teacher.
I have been trying to figure out this stitch for ages, and I think this is the ONLY video out of so many that has explained it so clearly that I can actually understand it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
THIS IS FOR ME! especially with the history of a left finger break that healed nerve-impaired.
Now it's easier to crochet a foundation. Thought I might have to give this hobby up due to imperfect starts.
Been crocheting for 50 years, never too old to learn a new trick , stitch:0), thank you! Like my yarn, I'm hooked (subscribed).
I am a long time crocheter and have attempted the foundation chain many times, with no success. With this video, which I watched a couple times, I will never "chain" again! Thank you very, very much.
Wonderful! Glad it helped!
Thank you for explaining where to start on the second row. I've read and watched so many tutorials trying to figure out how to transition and NO ONE explains it😂. Super helpful.
I needed to see this because I usually hate straight away double crocheting, but this makes it a lot easier! Thank you!! Saving this video!
Yay! So glad it was helpful!
THANK YOU FOR THIS EXCELLENT TUTORIAL 💝! IT DOES MAKE YOUR FINISHED PROJECT LOOK SO MUCH BETTER! VERY CLEAN & NOT SO TIGHT AS STARTING WITH SINGLE CROCHET STITCHES 😊💝!
Thank you for a great video that was easy to follow. Also, thank you for not having crazy long nails that are extremely distracting for so many of us. I seriously appreciate that. 🙂
Thank you for this! I crocheted a lot and then I stopped working on my projects this really refresh my memory at 2:32 I think you explained it the best! Thank you!
This is amazing. I was shown a different way which was way trickier and hard to get the same size stitch all the way across. Many thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful!
I just wanted to thank you because I watched several other videos and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. After watching your video it turns out I just needed to loosing up lol that one little tip changed my life lol now this is my favorite stitch to do
Thank you so much for this video! I have tried so many times over the years and just couldn't do this. After watching your video last night, the light bulb finally came on! Haha I guess I was making it harder than it truly is! Now I can tackle all those projects I put aside! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Where has this been all my crocheting life?! 🤩😍🥰
👍I haven't made anything for at least 17yrs and was like what is this?
I've been looking for a good FDC tutorial. Most of them either go too fast, don't show a good angle, or just plain do it wrong. This is perfect!! I was able to follow it easily and now actually understand it instead of just following it along.
I am so glad you found the video helpful!!
I was sooo confused how everyone was saying this video made it so easy for them because i could NOT get it. Then I realised I was the problem 😂 i didnt start in the first ch, but now i got it!!! Thank you so much! Lol
I’ve watched other videos on Facebook and yours is GREAT! Really shows exactly what to do, holding the yarn and the work in a great position to see and understand the process!
This is by far the best and easiest tutorial I ever used. I think I was doing work with. Thank you. I’m looking forward to using your using forward to use your tutorial again.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much! The way you explained it made me realize how easy it actually is. Now I am wondering why I bothered with all those annoying foundation chains in the first place. Thanks to you, never again!
omg this is genius! i love the neatness of the bottom edge.
I have tried and given up on the foundation double row many times and watched many different videos but your video finally made it all click! I can actually visualise what I'm doing with that ch1 forming the bottom then working the stitch sideways in comparison to the normal way. I am doing a second cardigan for my baby nephews and I did the first one with normal chain rows so I am looking forward to an easier and neater edging on this one. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful!!
Thank you! I appreciate the refresher! Its been SO LONG since I've done this, I just could not get it right. You Rule! Very easy to follow
This is the easiest to understand than anything I have found. Thank you for rescuing me.
Thank you so much!! I watched so many different videos from different people and you’re the first one that was able to really teach me. I feel like yours is more simple than the other ones that I watched. you aldo explained it much better.
Oh ok basically you extended double crochet all the way up, cool 😎 now it makes sense for the pattern I was reading thanks for sharing ❤
This is perfect! I’m making a lot of Afghans and this method will be much better than chaining 250!!
Whew! I tend to crochet pretty tightly and I HATE that first row into chains. This is an awesome alternative. So much easier. I’ve crocheted for 30 years and can’t figure out how I never knew about this! 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Wow...I believe you are the first one I've ever seen hold your yarn and hook exactly like I do. Definitely subscribed. 😃
Thank you for this video, now I understand that you have to keep the chain separated from the double crochet, thinking of this keeps me on track!
Great tutorial! Easy to see, concise, and clear diagram of the stitch. Fantastic!
Why am I just now learning about this!!!! 😮 Game changer!!!!
How do you continue with foundation row when you have a base of say 90 chaines
Thank you for your clear explanation. I especially like how you describe the actual anatomy of the stitch. It makes sense now!
Glad it was helpful!
Been Crocheting for years and never heard of this. I like it now that I got to see how to do it! Now I can make this Bulky infinity scarf that had this for the start of the pattern. 💗
Glad it was helpful!
This is an excellent tutorial! I’m very much a beginner-level crocheted and it was easy to follow even for me. Thank you so much.
Genius!! This video makes it much easier to understand. This will be great when making those blankets and afghans with so many chains. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Explained the best &simplest I've seen. Great, great teacher!
Fantastic, thank you, it helped the start of a hat, setting the foundation for a few rows of front post stitch. I found doing chains and then a row of double crochet it was feeling tight from the chains alone, this doesn't with dc foundation, it's perfect :)
Thankyou Ashlea for all of your foundation crochet videos. You did such a great job explaining how to do it!. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Love this! Such a clear explanation and thank you for showing how to do the first row. Very helpful.
You're welcome : )
I love this. Ive been doing it the other way for so long i have to rewire my brain. So excited i came across this. 🙏🏽
Watched a few videos on this and it's not made any sense until now - fabulous instructions thank you!
Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial! I've always wanted to create a rectangle shawl, but I didn't want to deal with the long chain. I just subscribed to your channel. THANKS AGAIN!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Ty! Perfectly explained , I love how you told us which stitch represents what. And Also i know why my chain was curling
omg. this was easier than I thought. LOL THANK YOU! I had so much anxiety over it.
I really enjoy how you explained each step. Really helpful!
Thank you!!! I avoided learning this for so long! LOVE this technique!
Thank you! I’ve tried this a few times in the past and couldn’t get it until now! Great tutorial!
Glad it helped!
This was a very clear and easy tutorial.
God bless you for sharing this.
Thank you so much for counting the stitches. Helped me a lot. 😊
Thank you!! I was having such a hard time with this in a pattern with only written instructions. Needed the visual and the repetition!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Ashlea!! You made this so easy!! I'm starting your Lori Poncho and wanted to do it like your's. I have crocheted since I was 8,,,so, 50+ years,,,but still like learning new tricks. 😂
Thank you! I'm so glad I 'm came across your video! I've watched several other on how To Foundation Double Crochet but yours made sense to me!! I finally got It! LOL! Thank you!
Thank you, this was really clear to watch and helped me to understand that I have been doing it wrong for years :D
The best explanation here in UA-cam....
Very beautifully explained. .. base, dc and top chains.
I got it in one go. Thanks
This was difficult to learn on lace- weight yarn, but so worth it! Thanks for this video. 😊
Great tutorial! Every step was clear to follow and it was clear what you were doing the whole time. Thank you so much!
Thanks - VERY clear instructions, and video is very well done, so we can see exactly how you are doing it. I have read multiple instructions and watched multiple videos on this technique, and this is the best I’ve seen. I find it interesting that you start the first foundation DC in the bottom loop of the first chain - I have seen and read of it done in a variety of ways, but I like the look of this, a nice square corner. You are very clear about how you turn to start the next row, thanks. Maybe clearer with DC, but in the past I haven’t clear with SC on whether you start your next row on the “top” or “bottom” of the stitch. I will watch your foundation SC video.
My only concern is that the bottom corner of that last stitch is rounded and doesn’t match the corner by the first stitch. Do you kind of square this up when you do a border? I think put a stitch marker in there to make sure I don’t get confused about where the corner is.
Anyway, well done!
Really clear and easy to follow, thanks! Makes starting my huge blanket much easier.
Brilliant!!!!😁🤣 Finallllyyyy! Thank you so much. This is my first foundation stitch I have learned. Now going to look at your sc and tc foundations. 🥰😚
Wonderful!
This is such a good tutorial! I was wondering why my rows were curving, thank you!!!
This is absolute GENIUS!
omg finally someone explaining it so i can understand!!!! thank you so much!
Great video! The tip about keeping the first loop tall, at the same level as the others was very helpful to me. I subscribed and will be watching all your awesome videos! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you! I'm making a throw and that first row always seems to be smaller and tight. Going to keep practicing 😊
I heard that if you use a hook half size larger than the hook used for the work to do the foundation row it will not be smaller or tighter. So if your work calls for 5.0mm then use 5.5mm for the foundation row only.
Your videos are so clear and helpful :D thank you! Your tip about how to maintain the tension is exactly what I was looking for :D
Thank you for making this so easy to understand!! I really need to learn how to join the stitches though. I am trying to make fingerless gloves starting with a foundation double crochet and I can't figure out how to join them!!!
This is an awesome tutorial. Crystal clear, thank you!
So clear, so helpful! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
YOU EXPLAINED IT SO EASILY THANK YOU SM!! 🥰💛
Glad it helped!
This is awesome!! Thank you for sharing! This is going to make starting my next project a breeze considering I have to start with a chain of 430! 😅
Ooof! That is a lot! Glad this can help in some way!

OH MY FLIPPING GAHDDDDDDAHH …..I just got it on the first try. Ma’am you are holy.

Fantastic explaining - you make it very easy to follow - thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this video I have never got this but straight away with your clear instructions I have mastered it!
You're welcome. Glad it helped : )
Thank you for this video! Now I get it. I watched other videos, read written instructions...you made it pretty easy. Thank you from a new subscriber!!
Hi, where can I find the WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS you refer to?
@@gretchensteward4078 The written instructions I was referring to were in a pattern that I was working on. I googled and found your video and it made great sense. The pattern, not so much.
Umm okay. Thank you! Man i was always intimated by the FC! But this made it seem so easy and it was! I love it. Gracias!
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much for sharing. Very nice tutorial. Exciting to learn new things
Thank you for showing me how not to curve. That was a problem I was having.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😁😁😁
That was super easy thanks to you! I’ve tried to watch others teach this stitch but you nailed it and made it super easy to follow so THANK YOU
You're welcome!
Excellent commentary! Very good instructor.
Thank you! Now ican start my picnic poncho ❤
This is the first video that I could learn how to do this wi th
Thanks! I’m starting my first garment & it calls for the FoundationDC====🤷♀️What??🤷♀️🤷♀️🧶🧶NowI know what it is & can try it out.🧶🧶🧶
I'm new to crochet and I really understand what you're doing and can do it exactly as you explain it especially because you explain things so well, but my foundation chain doesn't come out looking the same way. My chain doesn't sit up as tall and as defined. It's almost like its smooshed I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I just started learning and started using a tension ring to help with my tension as I was always too tight. I guess I should just practice this more?
This was so easy to understand!
Thank you for a clear understanding of the stitches
