Trailer for Mr. Holland's Opus.
1965. Musician and composer Glenn Holland decides to switch gears in his career by taking a music teaching job at John F. Kennedy High School in order to have more free time to spend with his bride, Iris Holland, and compose, most specifically a symphony which has always been his dream to do. This career change is despite music rather than teaching being his passion, and having no experience in teaching beyond having a teaching certificate. He quickly learns that it is a job that he hates - largely because his students generally don't relate to music the way he does, and of where he and the music program fit within the pecking order of the school - but which he sticks with if only because of life circumstances. With some help most specifically from school principal Mrs. Jacobs, he understands he has to find the same passion that he has for music and translate that somehow into the way he relates to his work and to the students if he is to survive in this life. His teaching work over the years is seen at various specific stages, and against the backdrop of milestone events happening in the world. His job and dealing with students and the staff also affects his personal life, not only with Iris, but also with his son Cole (who is named after John Coltrane), who on the surface could not be more different than his father, and as such is someone to who Glenn has difficulties relating, and to that much wanted time to compose that symphony, which was the reason for taking the job in the first place.
Had the honor of meeting Dreyfuss today at Cincinnati Comic Expo; truly an amazing man in person. So kind and told me this movie was one of his most honorable movies because he belives teachers are some of the hardest working people we have in this country.
Wow
I just watched this on Disney + and I was not prepared. Yes, I cried 😭. Dreyfuss deserved an oscar.
It's up there with his best films.
He deserved an Oscar
I just rewatched this movie today, and thought this deserved academy award. I've forgotten how beautiful of a movie this was.
My husband and I created a slideshow tribute to "The Conductors", meaning the music teachers of his high school in a small town where the railroad was parts of their lives - outside of school. We chose "An American Symphony" by Glen Holland as the background music. Thank you to the cast, crew, and their families for a great film.
One of the best movies ever made.
Went to this movie not knowing what to expect and just loved it. I had a music teacher like him. He was my favorit teacher. He had a temper big time but he gave a damn. He was an anomaly in the 60s a Christian Lebanese. Broke my heart when he left to become an Evangelist. Just missed catching up to him half way across the country. By 1 dang day. Think he's passed now.
after all these years this movies touches me everytime i see it on tv. very great movie. ending brings me tears in my eyes every time no matter how old i am.
Watched it when it first came out, as a kid. Throughout all my turmoil, I remembered it. Specific moments. Him cheating on his wife. The wife discovering the child was deaf. The realization for both of them. The child realizing, the father realizing, sound, is movement, and emotion, and far more then what either could have forseen. It changed my perception, and though my own disabled children were not deaf, they were nonverbal, and it was part of my learning, understanding, this movie.
I don’t remember him cheating on his wife. I remember him feeling tempted to cheat, but resisting it. I need to watch the movie again. I definitely missed something.
He didn’t cheat, he was tempted to go for his dream (that had been put off), with the young student singer going to New York, but he didn’t follow through with any of it. He didn’t cheat.
The biggest point that this movie made ,to me, was how the arts program is always the first school program to be sacrificed
If schools don’t have an arts program, they may as well shut down all programs.
One I know my kids school would Never shut down would be the Football program….
God Forbid !
Can’t shut down a program that makes big money !
The years my kids were in band
They constantly did well
The band programs still are.
The football program has its ups and downs but the support is always there.
Thanks to the community supporting both , both have thrived in many aspects.
So have other areas in sports and arts.
The minute any school administration forgets that !
They have failed their community !
Rest In Peace Olympia Dukakis :(
Richard should have gotten the Oscar for this, not Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas!!
As a recovering alcoholic who was inspired to get sober by Cage's uncanny portrayal of what it is like to spiral down hard all i can say is, Richard who?
I always loved Alicia Witt in this movie but didn't then recognize her right away when I saw her in later Hallmark movies. Her role here was wonderful! And now that she has lost her parents (December 2021, tragically), the line in this Trailer seems all the more meaningful.
the character of Mr Holland was inspired by my current teacher Mr Eisenhart, I didn't know this and I've been his student for two whole years...
I never got to watch this film as a kid. Love going back to watch old films. Memories of a simpler time
facts
Oh, man. You consider this an old film. Shit.
They were truly better, simpler times. Peace, RIP.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
I watched this at my old Town down movie theater back when it was released in theaters and the movie film sadly broke at the end and was skipping in most parts but after 15 and 11 years later I got to watch it over and over in its entirety. I enjoyed every minute of it and richard Dreyfuss is one of my favorite actors
I too, watched this movie in my old hometown theatre.
In my younger days, that theater was my, home away from home.
I revisited the town recently and where the Regent Theater once stood, is now a car park. Apparently, the theater burned down, several years ago, in the early hours and under suspicious circumstances.
I watched this for the first time last night, and it was so good. A professor of mine suggested this. I searched it on my Roku last night. Truly remarkable. Plus, I am a music major who plays percussion
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I have to watch it again.
What an absolutely beautiful movie. If you have not seen it, please watch it.
I just saw this film for the 1st time on free TV. I only saw the last 40 minutes but it was enough to leave an impact on me, especially the end of the film. It reminded me of a time that I went to my little boy's school assembly about 3 years ago. They announced that one of the teachers was leaving. The teacher stood in the audience and he just gave a bit of a wave and that was that. I kept watching and one of the male students in his class started crying. The teacher and other students tried to console the boy. All the students of that class had tears in their eyes. I was awestruck. I hope that teacher knew how special he was. A million dollars could not buy that. I still feel emotional just thinking about it even though it had nothing to do with me. Cherish the little things in life. And the special times. That's probably why we are here, anyway.
The old age make up nailed what Dreyfus would look like in his later years.
On my list of must watch and must have movies!!
29 Oct 2020 happy birthday Richard Dreyfuss. This is one of my favorite top 3 of your movies⚘💖
I just like love this movieeee sooo amazing and emotional! Me as a current high school clarinetist can relate and I just want to thank my band directors and overall teachers more!
What a great movie
This is a very, very, very good movie! I love it!
"Hi students, (lifts leg and rips a 30 second fart causing some students to go deaf) my name is (BEEEELCH) (lifts leg again to fart) Glen Holland ooohhh I gotta fart (lifts leg and rips a fart so hard some poo flys onto the wall) Dayum, that was a (BEEEELCH) raunchy one."
The next scene is the principal firing Mr. Holland
Principal:Mr Holland....oh my God he's lifting his leg. Everybody....RUUNNNNN!
Then the movie cuts to black and the credits roll..... perfect movie
One of my favorites.
Came to watch the trailer because I saw this movie is now on Disney+!
Same hahah
I was in Jr. High in 98-99 and this must have been my band director's favorite movie. Every time he had a substitute or we had free time he would always put this movie in. We never got to watch the full thing of course, but thankfully I was able to watch it all tonight (thanks Disney+).. feel just a little old now haha. Such a great movie and it was nice to relive those memories in the band room watching bits and pieces of this movie, even if a few of us grumbled about it haha.
Rest In Peace Glenne Headly.
I haven’t watched this since it first came out. It must’ve left some kind of impression on me cause I often think about it randomly. Time to watch it again.
Under distributed outside the U.S. through MGM Studios.
Bro I have only seen Richard in Krippendorf‘s tribe and what about Bob. I am so not used to him being a emotional and deep character. I’m so used to laughing at him. This movie just shook me. I didn’t know that Richard was that type of actor, but I most certainly would not put it past him. My cousin recommended this to me like a week ago and yeah, this movie was deep. This was a good watch.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I remember watching this movie in band class when I was sixth grade.
Great movie
Sad movie. The whole thing is about a guy who failed at the most important thing ever…being a dad.
He didn't fail he just had difficulty in learning how. He succeeded in the end.
I never did see Richard Dreyfus’s Orfice !
It was very touching. Excellent
1:50 She used that voice when she talked to "Christoper" in the hotel room on Sopranos. I knew I had heard that voice before!
My mom was an extra in this movie!
Excellant movie
Great movie, but I hate how the trailer spoils the whole movie lol
Dreyfuss...what do you love most about you?
:30//It's a good thing Meryl Streep (Roberta Demetrius) wasn't teaching. She would have told them off!
CLEVER FILM !!!
TISS brought me here..
Young Terrence Howard at 0:46
Well when you take a moment to really examine musical compositions they are constricted by numbers and time, they all have heartbeats, we call them, _tempos_ .
Just like a physician can use a heartbeat to determine if their patient is on a depressant or stimulant or even the species based on contigency to normal heartbeats, musician(s) must adhere to tempo of composer when playing a piece
When is the last time you saw a Hollywood movie promote raising a family??
명작!
Terrence pay attention
is this movie really that great, i mean 🍿 🥤 worthy?
yes
Jean Louisa Kelly should have been a bigger movie star
❤
yay
I got a music scholarship in H.S.
The trailer tells too much.
Agreed
what you learn from this lol
Make sure to bring a barf bag if you plan on making it to the end of this movie, Highschool Over Rated. On second thought, bring a second barf bag as that first one can fill up surprisingly quick from the endless corny dialogues and tired clichés.
Boring
It's a great film
