The Last Crown (Bl Karl of Austria)

Emperor Karl was the last emperor of the Austro-Hungary Empire. He was crowned as the Emperor after the death of his great-uncle: Emperor Franz Joseph on November 21, 1916.
He was known as a pious man with a deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion can be seen in the way that he ruled the country. He passed various legislation in conformity with Catholic social teaching to improve the lives of his people. He also tried to stop the war by supporting the peace proposals by Benedict XV. He saw it as his duty to love his people and devote his life to them.
After the war, he was banished from his homeland. However, the pope requested him to retake his throne in Hungary as the pope feared of communist takeover in Central Europe. Seeing it as his duty to serve his people, Karl attempted to take the throne, twice but failed. He was then exiled to Madeira. He saw his abandonment there as a commission from God, a duty he could not put aside.

Fun fact 1: Karol Wojtyla (Pope JPII) was named after Emperor Karl. He had hoped that he would be able to beatify both Karl and Zita at the same time, but unfortunately, the empress's cause did not progress as fast as he hoped.
Fun fact 2: In 1911, Pope Pius X greeted Karl as the future emperor of Austro-Hungary. Karl thought it was a mistake given that time, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the crown prince.
