  • More than 100 years before the famous Catholic rebellion in Vendée, France, there was another Catholic rebellion in the Far East. This history is mostly forgotten in today's Catholic world, so hope this song will spark more curiosity to learn about the Samurais and the peasants who died defending the Faith.
The rebellion happened during the era of Tokugawa Shogunate. Fearing the rapid spread of Catholicism in Japan, Tokugawa decided to curb this spread by declaring that Christianity was illegal for the Japanese and began the persecution of Japanese Christians. The oppression towards Christians and over-taxation against the peasants were especially harsh in the Shimabara region, where the majority of the population were Catholics. Disgusted by the treatment of the daimyo of Shimabara towards their people, a group of ronin (samurai without a master) decided to plot an insurrection. On the 17th of December 1637, under the leadership of 16-year-old Amakusa Shiro (Christian name: Geronimo). Legends have it that Shiro could perform miracles and was seen as a messianic figure, hence he was nicknamed "The heavenly messenger". The rebels also carried banners with the Blessed Sacrament drawn on those banners.
At the opening of the insurrection, the local daimyo forces were defeated and had to take refuge inside the castle walls of Shimabara. After almost a month of fighting, the rebel troops received news that a massive shogunate army was en route to Shimabara. Shiro commanded the rebel troops to withdraw to Hara Castle and took their last stand there.
The Shogunate army arrived with the strength of 100,000 men, outnumbering the rebel forces by 3 to 1. Despite their numerical superiority, their assaults against the Castle Hara were met with failures. Their commander was even killed in battle. Desperate, the shogunate troops requested the help of the Dutch to bombard the castle from the sea. The Protestant Dutch, who had a great disdain towards Japanese Catholics, agreed to help. They sent one of their ships and bombard the castle, but most of their shots missed.
After months of siege, the rebel forces did not have a way to replenish their supplies. Many of them went hungry and they started to try to find supplies. Unfortunately, they were caught and executed. The rebels were also betrayed by Yamada Emosaku who reported the grave situation of the rebels. Having this information, the shogunate army decided to assault the fortress for the last time, and the Castle defences crumbled. An orgy of violence happened the next three days after Hara Castle fell. It was estimated around 40,000 people (mostly Catholics) were beheaded by the shogunate troops. Those who managed to escape the siege were hunted down and executed. Among those who were executed was Shiro, the rebel commander. His head was displayed in Nagasaki as a warning to Christians there.

@@JuanPedrazaxXXjk Constantine sounds like a good idea, but I am not sure about Charlemagne. He had multiple wives and concubines. Not a great model for chastity.
