  • As the secular world put June as the month to commemorate Asmodeus, let us remember the martyrs of Uganda who gave their lives to protect the Christian faith and the virtue of chastity.
St Charles Lwanga was a chief Page in the court of King Mwanga II. He was appointed to that position after the previous chief, Joseph Mukasa, was murdered by the king because he rebuked the king's homosexual lifestyle and protected the younger boys from the king's lust.
As a chief Page, St Charles did everything he could to protect the boys and the men who served in the king's court from the king's sexual advances. He managed to do this for six months before the king became suspicious. The king called one of his pages and interrogated him. He found out that the boy had been receiving religious instruction from Denis Sebuggwawo. The king called Denis and killed him by thrusting a spear into his throat. He then gathered all of his Pages and separated the Christians from the rest. The Christians were ordered to renounce their faith, but they firmly refused. All the men were under 25 years old (including St Charles Lwanga).
These Christians were bound and forced to march a 37-mile trek to the place of their execution. One of the missionaries, Fr Lourdel, witnessed this march and was amazed at the courage and joy of these young men on their way to martyrdom. He saw St Kizito, a condemned 13-year-old boy laughing and chattering during the march. The Father also saw the execution of a soldier, James Buzabaliawo. Before he was killed, he consoled Fr Lourdel by saying, "Why are you so sad? This nothing to the joys you have taught us to look forward to."
The survivors of the march arrived at the place of execution. They were kept imprisoned for 7 days and at the feast of the Ascension, they were all burned alive. St Charles Lwanga was separated from the rest. The executioners decided to kill him slowly, so they burned only his feet until they were charred. He was then offered to deny his faith so he could save his life. St Charles refused and he was then set ablaze. When he almost died, he looked up to the sky and cried "Katonda! My God!" and then he died.
May Christians everywhere draw inspiration from the martyrdom of St Charles Lwanga and his companions in resisting the pride ideology that is so prevalent these days, especially in June. St Charles Lwanga and companions, please pray for us!
