After the Cascade Woodturners club asked me to do a demo, I needed to make a practice run. After the last whistle, a viewer suggesting making the whistle in a way that it could be tuned instead of relying solely on the depth of holes drilled in the cylinder.
This whistle is tuned by inserting a dowel in the opposite end of the whistle. Move the dowel in and out until the target pitch is achieved. Then glue it to lock it in place. OR, for the tone deaf, just glue in different lengths of dowel.
For this whistle, the air chambers are drilled completely thru the main body cylinder. Drilling these deep holes is quite a chore.
5/8" down from the end, the inner air chambers are exposed and slightly flattened dowels inserted above the gap with the flat to the outside.
On the other end, I inserted dowels to tune the whistle. After cutting the dowels to an appropriate length, they are glued in place.
A mouth piece provides a convenient way to blow the whistle with a small inner chamber allowing air to each whistle chamber.
An end cap on the other end, hides the dowels and completes the project.
The whistle body is maple (6 inches); the end caps are walnut. Both are finished with a beeswax and mineral oil mix. The overall length is about 8 inches and 2 inches in diameter.

Nice whistle :) The dowel plugs at the mouth end are called 'fipple plugs', the gap above is called the 'windway' and the edge created by the inner hole and outer angled cut is called the 'labium lip' (though I think 'labium' means lip anyway). The angle of the cut only matters to the extent that it shapes and sizes the opening and labium lip. The shape of the forward edge of the lip determines the quality of the sound.

Thanks for the technical specs. I hope to make more music. :)

Yes, tedious. But better than switching to a hand held drill.
    Thanks for commenting.

The only reason for the smaller lathe is that I had to use it for the club demo.
Using a small lathe makes me appreciate my Powermatic 3520A.
As for acquiring grandchildren, I cannot control that. :)

Why did the wood split? Deep drilling is a bit of a challenge but doable.
    Good luck.

Ok. The depth of the individual chambers determines the pitch. In my earlier whistle, I drilled each hole to a different depth for a different pitch in each. In this whistle, drill the holes entirely thru the blank. Then insert a dowel into the "tail" end. Move the dowel in and out until the target pitch is achieved. Then glue in the dowel to lock it in.
I'll edit the description to clarify.
    Thanks Pablo.

    At least it sounds official.
    Thank for the tip.

Sorry about that. Just pull the dowel in or out until you get the sound you like.

Anyone catch how deep the groove went into the drilled holes?

The v=slot is about 1/2 inch or less.

Even CA glue on the skin is not great - let alone gluing them together. I really would hate to have my lips glued together and try to get them separated again.

Oh, I make plenty of mistakes. If I edited them all out, it would be a very short video indeed.
