- This is from a capture of a 30 year old VHS Tape. The quality is quite poor. But if you're a die hard fan, you might still appreciate it.
Good old Merv. Danny was trying to decide whether to just BS his way through the interview but decided to give Merv some respect. Hilarious.
Danny takes the phrase "Wild eyed boy" to a completely different level
Danny so adorable behaving himself during the interview. GOD I MISS OINGO BOINGO!
I love Danny's energy so much :) noticed a flock of seagulls in the beginning too, nice
my zaniness is even worse
I'm attempting to form a band called diabolical sabotage
They also got some of Dolby's Europa & the pirate twins, classic 80s 👌
I never expected him to sound like that when he spoke. He definitely should have played a character like Joker. The way he acts and looks. He would have been perfect.
well, he was the devil in th Foridden Zone, way more theatrical and interesting than the joker
"What are you going to do next Danny?"
It's wild to think there was a point where Danny Elfamn was just known as the vocalist of a rock band.
And not the composer-lyricist of that rock band?
If you want to split hairs, sure.
Movie scores suck this is the only.thing hes done worth.a shyt
@@ralphtom3431Personally I wish he would do more Nightmare-style operettas if he’s going to do movie music. He in fact wrote a couple of his own that never got made beyond the demo songs because Disney cut the funding.
Danny is a true professional at his craft.
Merv was such a cool dude. Brought a lot of attention to a lot of new bands
Absolutely the best Oingo Boingo song ever... Watching them play and sing while playing their styled xylophones is incredible. I remember that live at the Greek Theater when I saw them also...
The instrument is called a Balafon. Danny got a settlement from a car accident early on and booked a trip to Africa. There's where he learned about this instrument. But it is basically like a xylophone, with gourds hanging below as resonators. I used to see them at the Greek and Irvine Meadows back in the old days as well.
@@rockwellcreative very cool, thanks for the info!
Best bass synthesizer hook ever. Kerry Hatch on Danny's left. Steve Bartek in shorts. Priceless. Thank you.
I absolutely agree. That bass line is sooo underrated. I’ve been trying to figure out what synth was used for it. Any ideas?
@@xandermijares342 it's a Moog source
The other keys are an Emu emulator 1, and a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
Still not my cup o tea but undeniable genius….so much music happening and yet still sensible enough to make it into “mainstream” of its time…..the ability to do that you’re in like Stevie Wonder territory….
Thank you so much for sharing this! It's getting harder and harder to find these early Boingo performances and interviews! What a delightful maniac
The description says this video is 30 yrs old, around 1991. But this looks to be back before Boingo had John Avila as the bass player.. closer to 80 - 84, I would say
You're right. I bought the tape in the 90s from a store on Melrose. But this particular segment from the Merv Griffin show is definitely from the 80s. Most likely 1982 as they were promoting the "Nothing to Fear" album.
@@rockwellcreative Ah, I see. Interesting'
This was filmed at Palm Springs High School in 82 or 83. I remember when they played there, but was only 12 and no one would take me. Went to that HS a few years later.
Yes, you’re right. It was after “Private Life” was released. Like ‘82, maybe?
@@rockwellcreativethanks for clearing that up. I knew it was some time before he did the score for Batman or he would have said so. "What's next Danny?"
"Oh gee I thought I'd give composing films a try!"
Thanks for posting this gem. Man. I remember playing this song over and over when I drove to high school. Boy, how I miss those gloriously fun '80s.
Everyone seems to forget that period in the early '90s when they dropped the "Oingo" and were just "Boingo." That really didn't last! Everyone was like, "eh, get outta here, you're Oingo Boing!"
i already knew this band for a while but yesterday i saw interviews of danny elfman and i can tell that i like him a lot :DD
The vocals are just fantastic
Later, Merv came out in his bikini briefs and Danny said "I'm not ready for this"
Oh my god that's priceless
Who's that lurking over there?
Love thissss! My favorite band and my favorite song of theirs!
Batman, Batman Return, Scrooged, Nightbreed, Darkman, Edward Scissorhands. The best 👏👏👏👏
Thanks for posting this.
I was there. I ran up to Elvira and kissed her after the show was over. I was 13.
That's awesome! Right on. 🙂
OOOOOHHHHH....Will be Right Back....is that a Versace?? OOOOOOhhhhh....
It's a goooooodd suit!
Danny Elfman looks so different now
Perfect
Funny thing about this vid is that Flock of Seagulls was playing in the BG for the first 3 minutes.
🤪
Saw Food For Feet at NAU student union 1992
HEY, I CAN HEAR "I RAN" FROM - FLOCK OF SEAGULLS IN THE BACKGROUND 👍 !
2:15 anyone recognize this synthesizer used for the bassline?
I believe that's a Moog Source, same synth used for the bassline on Blue Monday by New Order.
@@StopRequested thank you!
@@xandermijares342 FINNALLY THIS CLEARS THIS BULLSHIT UP
when it comes to oingo boingo songs like this or just another day now I know how the hell I would emulate this bullshit
Live vocals with the music pre-recorded is such an odd choice.
Did Merv's audio engineer call in sick that day?
Not sure why that made that choice. Could have just been some technical issues. We may never know.....
Can you please post these two episodes of the show: May 21 1980, Jan 9 1970?? Please!!🙏 It's very important!
Sorry, Madeline. I only have this one tape. Also, you were fantastic in Clue and Blazing Saddles. ;)
Real
K R O Q 📻 F.M., BABY 👍 !

Elf an is one in 6 billion
Unfortunately, this song has turned into prophecy.
We're all Devo.
And that’s why it made it to his 2022 Hollywood Bowl setlist.
Danny Elfman is really a musical genius his music is all over the place in movies etc..
Awesome
Danny is one of the most vocally gifted people in music history.
Brilliant.X
