Achilles later gives the seashell necklace to Briseis when he lets her go. He knew how much she loved the gods and worshipped them, so he gave her something that was made by a goddess.
Only the good - maybe the excellent ones - die young and glorious. And I don't hide my proudness of being born from the city that Thetis says in that scene, Larisa.
1:10 Thetis lives in Larissa, which as a female russian name is shortened Lara. Both Thetis (Troy, 2004) and Lara (Dr. Zhivago, 1965) were interpreted by Julie Christie.
Yes very true. Even in the book “song of Achilles” Thethis sends Achilles to Scyros in disguise so that he can stay away from the war. No mother would want the death for their son
It’s a great reminder to live by what she says; which is to live a life full of adventure, and no regret, and leave your Mark and Legacy for others to look at for a long time
You gotta realise these were strong characters... Even mothers are strong characters she's sacrificing her son so that he can die for what he has existed all his life.. she was breaking down but being proud and glad for her son because he is achieving his purpose and end goal of life
Lol…no. Her vocal tone grew once she brought up the fact that him fighting in the war would cause him to be known as a legend, something she knew he always wanted. The movie never touches on it, but She already knew he was doomed to die in Troy when he was a baby, which is why she dipped him in the River to prevent it.
I remember even years ago when I was younger, I thought there was something very special about this scene. Achilles' mother appears not as a gorgeous and glowing young goddess like you'd expect but an older woman - still beautiful and elegant in a way but ordinary and with something magical and mysterious about her. It's an interesting choice and clever writing. She clearly worries about her son and doesn't want him to go to war but is giving him a choice. It's a powerful scene ❤
This wasn't the first time I saw Julie Christie on the big screen - the year before, I took a 5-week summer filmmaking course at NC-School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and they actually screened DOCTOR ZHIVAGO on the largest of three screens there from a 65mm print!!! That whole course was my introduction to a lot of things I loved about cinema.
Metaphor for today- Choose a life of staying in your hometown with family and friends. Or move away, devote your life to a company. Become successful and well remembered but sacrifice the relationship with your family.
I see it differently. I believe you can either choose to live a “safe” and mediocre lifestyle and just do what normal people Or truly go after what you have always wanted to in life and chase the glory so that your legacy can be left behind for others to follow
I don't think he was trying to challenge fate, he knew what he wanted and how to get it. He only changed his mind when he met Bresis and being with her meant more to him than glory.
Why couldn't another option have been, "Stay in Larisa, wait until a war that's remotely sensible and worth fighting comes along (unlike this Trojan one), and then go fight in that one and have your name immortalized that way, if you'd like"?
on homer iliad version. Achilles' mother, knowing that her son would die if he fought in the Trojan War, disguised him as a woman and entrusted him to King Lycomedes' household, where he lived among the king's daughters. Achilles fell in love with one of Lycomedes' daughters, Deidamia, and impregnated her. Later, Odysseus discovered Achilles hiding in the court of Lycomedes and tricked him into revealing his true identity

How does providing facts over an unexplained opinion that had no reasoning constitutes as a “loss”? Anyone with critical thinking skills would know that if someone has an opinion, the best way to back that opinion would be with reasoning and an explanation. Just saying iT LoOkZ bAd is an opinion with no argument whereas stating how a film was award winning and hailed by critics are facts. when I first saw this movie years ago with zero knowledge of the actual story, I would've NEVER been able to tell this woman was a goddess, lol.
They say your mother was an immortal godess. They say you can't be killed.
Achilles: I wouldn't be bothering with the shield then, would I?

I think she was trying to tell him NOT to go
Nope. She's the one who pushed Achilles to go to the war for the sake of fame
@@pheromone714 Actually, in the mythology, she hid Achilles so he wouldnt go to war
@@pheromone714 She actually did not push him. She gave him a choice, it was his own decision to go to war.

I like her hair bun style ( achiles's mother)
