I've been riding a long time. Started weekly lessons when I was 7. Have ridden many, many other people's horses over the years. Managed 2 horse farms and on the polo farm, kept 12 polo ponies and 4 fox hunters in shape but that was almost 30 years ago. Herniated back discs, severe pain and no reliably safe horse kept me from riding for about 5 very unhappy years then I started again with a dressage instructor for something less jarring followed by a 9 week balanced seat refresher to put me through my paces under a watchful instructor's eye and while I could do all they asked in the lesson, I felt like I had no vocabulary for the things they were saying, that all I was taught was wrong or different now, that everything needed fixing. I stopped the lessons and began exercising others' horses again but I have felt at times like I've forgotten everything I knew. Proper position, proper hands, proper aids, core strength, confidence- gone after those instructors picked me apart. I haven't cantered in months and today I chickened out because it was windy and the horse I was on was excited and not listening. Had to go ride inside to combat my fear of being on a 30 year old hot horse who was acting like a 12 year old. I searched videos to prove to myself that I do know how to ride correctly, even if I'm out of proper practice. Saw your video channel for the first time and I love your style of teaching, explaining and demonstrating. I'm watching all your vids now to learn, refresh and recharge. Thanks for your hard work.
Please make sure you only canter when everything is good particularly for the first few times. Your confidence is very valuable and I would hate for you to lose it. There is no shame in walking and trotting until you feel very confident in those paces first. Try some two-point in the trot so that you are sure you have your balance (go and watch that video) and then go into the canter. 🙂
"Why would I be cross with my horse when hes offering me work?" Is a question far more riders need to ask themselves. Thank you for this video! Youre so thorough with your explanations and so balanced with your treatment of your horse. Its lovely to see!
What a perfect lesson. All your videos are great, but this was a true gem for me. My smart, sensitive mare always anticipates the canter and I'm never quite sure what to do. Asking for patience ends up frustrating her, I think. Allowing her to go ends up rough and often on the wrong lead if she won't let me set her up. I love how you offer explanations. That is real teaching! It gives a deeper understanding so we can reason through situations that may be a bit different from your specific videos.
This video is really helpful. My horse gets fast because he's been a race horse and won't stop when I pull on the reins to slow him down, I also tried doing circles to get him to stop cantering but he just does canter drifting and still won't stop. My trainer told me to pull really hard on the reins, when I did he started galloping and I am still learning how to canter so that was a scary experience.
Late response here…but I’d get some lower level dressage basics going. Lots of bending and circles in the arena. Avoid long stretches of space. Keep your hands up above withers with consistent gentle contact. Sit up straight and relax your seat when you want to slow down. OTTB are trained to speed up when you pull on the reins, so start with your body. Find a good dressage trainer. Good luck!
Thankyou so much from day one trying this i feel my horse is way smoother and relaxed on the canter its not perfect yet but the improvements are amazing. Again thankyou so much you know what your saying thats for sure
This lesson was just what I needed. My horse has lost confidence in her canter. She had ulcers which was making canter painful, and she started performing every time I asked for transition. Took us a while to diagnose the cause & treat the ulcers, but the legacy is she gets flustered and wants to perform at transition times. I have been looking for a way to get her to just relax into it as she used to. So today I tried this exercise & it was brilliant. As you said on the video they starti thinking about the downward transition, this took her mind off feeling fussed. The upward transition was far smoother, she held her frame better in it. I was mindful not to work on it to much, but really feel it’s going to help us work through this bump in our road together. Thankyou
I have taken your advice on how to go on the right lead and it worked perfectly, know i will put this lesson to test, my horse does go fast when cantering. Thanks for the lesson
I’m glad it helped you and I’m so glad that at 13 you are wanting to learn and help your pony 💕. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with 😊
@@BasicHorseTraining thank you so so much, all of your videos have been so useful! I was wondering if you could make a video on exercises for unbalanced horses? 💜
I put mine onto a circle and spiral in and out and then will go into trot and if he gives a nice trot instead of a really tense fast trot I will go back to canter. If he has the frustrated fast trot then he has to do shallow loops or spirals to get the balanced trot and then into a walk. I will bring him all the way down as far as I need to before going back to canter but that will only happen if he is balanced, listening and not pulling or rushing. Once he is working in a relaxed manner, we transition upwards. If my legs, hips and pelvis are working ok then that obviously makes my riding more natural and less self focused on form and balance, which in turn helps him to do his job and makes the above example happen a lot less. He has a superb canter when my body is working ok!
Thanks, Josie. I came back to this video about a year later and further along in my riding learning and it taught me some additional pointers. So many subtleties with riding!! I really appreciate how you break things down to the basics (which are simple but not easy!).
Thank you so much for posting this. What a wonderful teacher you are! I ride a young horse (4 years old). He doesn't know canter yet. He only understands gallop and he often speeds up like a maniac. I will try this with him and see how we do.
Yes that makes sense ... recently been on a horse that wanted to trot all the time. he wasn't doing anything nasty so had to put him on a small circle he seems to be happy trotting. His canter felt like it was at 90mph and yes he ran onto the canter that was fast
I love your videos! I'd love to try this but my downward transition into the trot always feels a bit bumpy...would love a video on smoother downwards transitions
Thank you!!! This video is so helpful to us!!!! The canter of my horse is quite powerful for me. Visually everybody say is wonderful. But on saddle is, wow, so hard!! He was badly trained. No half halts such as many others are missing. In canter, i loose the control of my body, becoming not balanced, therefore not balancing him. But yes, he goes just forward and he doesn't know how to go slower (he cant collect that much yet - I am still working as well on his muscles). I will start doing those transitions and hopefully i can get him in a circle, this last being quite difficult as well. The left lead is really bad and wonder if it is me or him. But on the left i control even less his canter!! I tried on straight lines few times, but he falls on his forehands quite badly. I tried straight lines as circles in canter are so demanding for me! Anyway, sorry for this long message :) Maybe you have an additional suggestion for us :) I love your videos!!! I saw the video on trot - canter transitions with the leg yield suggestion. Awesome!! Ill look how to do a downward transition from canter to trot :) THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
Hi Josie, my ottb isn’t too bad in the canter but I thought I would try this today to work on his canter a bit more. The many transitions tend to just make him super nervous and this makes him want to go too fast in both trot and then the canter. I then had to hold him from going too fast and losing control, so much so that my hands become sore. Without the many transitions, he usually trots nicely for me only occasionally becomes unbalanced, similar for the canter but I do want to slow it down more. He is a fast learner and easily forms habits and also anticipates a lot too. If you have any pointers for me that would be awesome.
That is an excellent question Annie and shows that you are very thoughtful regarding the horse. To answer it - all horses are different just like we are. Some are more athletic than others. Putting a rider on their back will certainly affect their balance though and so we need to be mindful in the beginning that we don't make it harder for them than it has to be. So Yes a green horse can be very unbalanced without a rider but the added weight of a rider will always impact their balance some more than others and that comes down to the athleticism of the individual horse. 🙂
Hi Josie can you maby do a video to show hoe to gallop on a horse me and my friends love to go on outrides but I always feel when galloping that im going to fall off🙈
Hi, I've only just found your channel (looking forward to watching your other videos however forgive me if this has been covered). My horse transitions to canters fast to begin with because of his laziness/lack of impulsion to collect and keep the movement going. I check with the outside rein and try to push from behind but a lot of the time he will break back into a trot when I try to bring him back. I've tried making his canter circles smaller but as you would know its also harder for a horse to canter smaller so yes he slows down but he also loses balance and struggles because he is not collected. My horse will canter with incredible impulsion and collection when we are working cattle because he loves cattle. Completely different horse. But when I am trying to do some training/dressage to improve his cattle work he is lazy and not as interested. I have not being using a dressage whip only dummy spurs to get him moving with energy. I feel like its going to take a lot of transitions but would love videos or any exercises you could suggest
I have currently the opposite issue. I am starting a mustang and she won’t canter under the saddle. Trot is just fine, canter without a rider too. I ask for a faster trot and she just stops. I am puzzled but will just continue to trot.
This was great help Josie! Though I do have a question, I have a 6 year old and he seems to get quite nervous when lunging and seems to go quicker in trot and canter, would I do the exact same thing if asking him to trot, walk, trot, walk .
I have a horse the scoots into the canter and we loose all steering during the canter basically. Obviously hes running in the canter very unbalanced. But im struggling as i said the canter transition from trot to canter is a scoot and vroom running with hardly any control. Could you maybe give some tips for how to work this out We do tons of trot poles and 20 meters with poles as well. But im not sure how to translate the balance to canter and the steering and bend either. Its like he blacks out.
The horse I ride his canter is very bumpy but I can work with it well it’s just he gets super excited and I don’t know how to control him when he gets to fast I just get nervous and stop all together even when I half haul the still gets faster? I’m not sure what’s wrong mabye I should try a smaller horse or diffrent position idk what to do have any suggestions?
My horse keeps popping her shoulder out and on a certain side of the arena going the left lead only in the canter I’ll turn her and she will keep going straight running me into the rail but she will have her head but her body going straight.. how do I fix that? I’m adding leg and rein
How do I keep my horse’s head to the inside when cantering whilst keeping her on the rail? She is always looking out and getting fast, but will take any invitation to get off the rail.
hello there! I am sort of a begginer (ive been rideing for about three years) and I am soely in lessons and do not own a horse, the horse I ride is a super fast (she is bred to be a hunter/jumper) and I only get to be on her 45 minutes a week, and only about 10 minutes canter and I don't really want to tell my instucture what to do and I can not for the life of me get her to slow down, I do half halt after half halt and it does not help a bit. She also is in a bitless bridal because she throws her head alot. Any tips i could use?
My horse is 20; I have never cantered on him because he just keeps getting into a faster and faster trot, which becomes really hard and I feel off balance and am afraid to push him into the canter; he also has run off with me a few times and it's always a rough run. I will go back to ground work (I'm watching a lot of your teaching now) but how do you get a horse to go from an easy trot to an easy canter without just ending up in a faster and faster trot? Thank you. I have jumped (very low jumps) and shown hunter hack; also ride western/trails.
It’s hard to answer without seeing your issue but try teaching the horse the word canter on the lunge so then when you get in the saddle he already knows what you want. Make sure you aren’t inadvertently telling him go and stop at the same time because you are nervous to canter. That would not be fair to the horse. I hope that helps a little. 🙂

Добрый день! Я из Украины и не знаю английского языка. Могли бы описывать урок в одном комментарии под каждым видео, чтобы я через переводчик могла понять в чём суть урока. Заранее, благодарю.
My horse trots, then stops and it goes on like that and it’s make me like go so unbalanced how do you fix a horse like this to make it stop when u ask it. But continue trotting without just go stopgo stop
Hi Teale. I don't see why you couldn't but you might need to think about the reason you would want to...I'm wondering if the horses education need to be a little further along etc. If the round yard is big enough it would just be like a 20m circle.
This scares me because I know if I do this, my horse will learn that he only has to pick it up and then he can immediately drop it. Now to find a way around THAT...
My horse is not cantering away from the gate, and when I make him canter towards the gate he goes off the track and goes super fast. He's not green or young either. 😢when I canter on a circle he always will try and duck out towards the gate. I don't know how to fix this.
It is a little hard to give advice when I cant see what is happening but you could try a couple of things. When he begins to speed up going towards the gate you could turn off on a circle line to turn him away from the gate and see if he slows down. It might take a few times so don't give up straight away.and If he is completely fixated with the gate I would perhaps get him cantering in front of the gate and then move away from the gate and allow him to rest. If he heads back to the gate again allow him but make him work there and then go away from the gate to rest.
Hi Josie, I love you explaination and I tried this method however my horse anticipates the canter and won’t come back down to a trot even with just a few strides. I try to turn off the rail and circle but then she is like a freight train to turn, falls in like a dirk bike and throws her head down making me lose my balance. I am worried to even trot because she becomes rushy and then comes off the rail especially in corners. When she banks in at the corners like a dirt bike is when I fall off because she’s running and turning too fast. Any tips please? Much appreciated:)
I would forget about the canter under saddle atm and work on the trot. I never do a higher gait until I have the lower one under control first. The trot is the same principle except you ask for trot then come back to walk with in a few strides. Same exercises but use trot walk instead. Try to lunge your girl and allow her to find her balance at the canter without you on her.

@@BasicHorseTraining thank you. They are taller than I thought. The mare crossed with the Welch stallion must have been big. They are lovely horses your pair.
No she was only 15:2 🤔
What does it mean to have a "better" trot?
Добрый день! Я из Украины и не знаю английского языка. Могли бы описывать урок в одном комментарии под каждым видео, чтобы я через переводчик могла понять в чём суть урока. Заранее, благодарю.
My horse trots, then stops and it goes on like that and it’s make me like go so unbalanced how do you fix a horse like this to make it stop when u ask it. But continue trotting without just go stopgo stop
Hi Josie,
Working with a very green OTTB, would you suggest doing this in the round yard at all?
What breed of horse
What breed of horse is rebel
Hi Rebel😊
Hello 😊
@@BasicHorseTraining I always love learning from you. You are such a great teacher Josie.
Always fair to the horse & speaking for them in an honorable, respectful way😊
That is the kindest thing anyone has said to me - Thank you. It is always my intention to be respectful of the horse. They are such beautiful creatures and I am grateful as well as in awe of the fact that they allow us to ride on their back. 🙏
@@BasicHorseTraining I just love horses too & completely agree!
Too many idiot in the equine industry that are just dominating animals & that’s absolutely disgusting to me.
You really are clearly passionate about working with horses & helping people learn.
I always enjoy your explanations of things which are sometimes, otherwise, too complicated or overwhelming for person like myself to understand.
How in the heck is anyone supposed to know what a half hault is, if nobody has ever shown you?
I guess it’s the way you break things down, And two simple, easy to understand steps. I am amazed that you are able to make these high-quality videos, pretty much by yourself without a regular cameraman and on top of that you are also a nurse! Don’t forget a grandmother and taking care of all of your horses/animals too!
