Just found your channel. It's right up my alley! I'm a new rider. Having private lessons currently. I will be buying my own horse eventually, once I'm proficient enough and find a decent livery yard🐴🐎
Thanks! I used to gallop at the track & racehorse farms, for 12 years, & i’ve recently started riding an Oldenburg 4th level dressage horse. Sitting a canter is a challenge for me. The slo-mo part of this video and your explanation really helped me. You put into words the feeling of the stages of a canter so well. I didn’t really know uphill, level & downhill. Thanks & ride on, fam.
That’s fantastic! Sitting trot is usually much more difficult than canter. I know it is for me as well. I’m sure your balance in the canter will come soon enough. ☺️
I find sitting the canter is easier than trotting or doing rising trot. Just know this: bareback sitting trot is the foundation for the canter. It teaches you to relax your thigh muscles and follow the movement of the horse with your hips.
@@DeannaThompsonCorby I was looking for a video to send a student. I like to teach sitting trot and how to engage the hind end; and to help the students to learn how to get the horse to move off their leg in circles, laterally, etc to begin to understand what it means to maintain the frame. There is so much to do in sitting trot! If they master all this in sitting trot, their first canter is a delight to them and to me to watch! Canter work is so much easier, as they already understand what they did in the sitting trot. Now it is just a matter of applying it while in the faster gate. Most do very well with this, depending on the horse and it's particular way of going of course, but the understanding, the foundation is there.
I love the addition of videos AFTER your explanations. It helps to understand without being overloaded with info! You've not confused me one time yet! Thank you so much for your videos. You're helping me get back in the saddle after 20 years! 🙂
Stumbled upon this video while watching another. So happy I did, liked, subbed and alarmed after watching it. This and gallop scare the heck out of me because I always feel that I am going to go flying off the horse. Unfortunately I have not been on well behaved horses for a beginner rider and never on an English saddle! lol I didn't think there was a place to hold onto, so thank you for that tip if I ever get over my fear.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it. It sounds like you need to spend some time on an old been there, done that type of school horse that will just lope along in the canter. That will help you get some experience in the gait so that it feels less scary. Don’t think of the canter as being faster, think of the canter as just a different order in which the horse puts his hooves down on the ground. You’ll get there! 🙌🏻
i came to this video because i just started riding a horse with a strong, downhill canter, and i’m trying to figure out how to... well... ride it. the horse i rode before him was a little fjord pony with a short stride and a nice uphill canter. the new horse that i’m riding feels VERY different compared to the horse i used to ride, and i always feel so off-balance when i ride him at a canter. i just had a lesson yesterday, and it was a lot better, but... i still struggled a bit. i think this video will help a lot. thank you :))) (i’m a hunter/jumper rider, by the way).

Fantastic video! I am going on a trail ride today and wanted to prepare for cantering. I’ve cantered once before and I had no idea what I was doing and it was quite a scary experience lol! This video has really helped me to understand the technique! Thanks!!
I'm trying to better my trot and canter as I honestly don't have good balance, every now and then i'll do fine but, sometimes I get cramps in my hips, legs, feet, etc. and i'm also trying to break the habit of grabbing with my lower leg when in a canter, made that mistake a few times and the horse didn't approve lol. anyways, I'm from NC also!
Hi neighbor!! 😁 yes, clutching your legs in the canter or while riding at all is not a good idea but sometimes it’s a hard habit to break. To prevent cramps, try some gentle stretches before your ride and look in to some Pilates and Yoga as a way to cross train for your time in the saddle. Good luck! 💛
Hey... I just found your channel and this video is really helpful. As you see, I'm also learning horseback riding from past few months...but I think I'm a very slow learner or let's say...I've a low self confidence honestly☹️ I'm unable to balance myself properly and every time my horse start cantering, I panic a lot!! It seems like I'm not controlling him, he is!😁🧐 I hope you'll help me through your videos. Thank you🥰🐴🐴💓
I love your videos and can see how important it is to you to get really good/correct and important details and methods of riding out there for others that may not have the best instructors with correct knowledge or education on important parts of learning to ride effectively, efficiently, correctly and just healthier and kinder for the horse. Could you do a video or video series on half halts and different types and the breakdown of aids and when and how to use them?? I also have some other things I wanted to run by you. Maybe I could send you an email regarding the more in-depth stuff.
Thank you very much! And yes, that is very true, those things are very important to me. I would love to do a video series like that. I’d love to hear your ideas. Feel free to email me at: deannacorbydressage@gmail.com I look forward to hearing from you!
That’s a great idea! I will put it on the list. What I can say for now is to do your best to learn your own independent balance by taking lunge lessons on a safe horse and from an educated trainer so that you may be prepared for unexpected moments like the one you mentioned. Thanks for watching my videos! 💛
When I canter I literally sit on my tail bone (not sure what it's actually called) whilst leaning up to get a balanced canter, how can I do that without sitting like that?
In the downward movement of the canter isn't that when the horse is going to need a slightly forward rein cause of that stretch? How do you lean back and keep your hands in a good position?
That’s a really great question! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes, your elbows should follow the horses neck in the canter and most definitely in the walk. In the down phase of the canter, as you “lean” back (don’t necessarily LEAN back just try to make yourself stay on your bum), your arms should be almost straight and then in the next beat of the canter, the uphill phase, your elbows go back to being a little bit bent, since the neck of the horse is will be a bit higher in that moment. I hope this helps.
Learning to ride is your own personal journey. Sometimes things take a while. I would suggest having a calm, honest conversation with your mom and tell her exactly how you feel. I think that will help. Good luck. ❤️
I keep wanting to slide of sideways to the inside of the circle when round pen, I don’t know why. My only guess is maybe I put uneven pressure in the stirrups? It honestly feels like I’m being sucked in by a vortex it feels that powerful
You’re probably leaning to the inside and dropping your inside shoulder in the corners. Try looking in facing your chest a little bit to the outside in every corner. It’s too hard to tell without seeing a video of your riding but give that a try and let me know how it works!
Bareback is a fantastic way to learn really excellent balance! It’s easier, on a way, because you do not have a floor (your stirrups) getting in your way and pushing you back up against the bounce!
Had a quick question Deanna. You said a rider who uses his seat for propulsion isn't the best example of a canter seat.. in a collected canter does that rule still stand true?
I’m not sure you understand my intent. Or perhaps I wasn’t clear. What I meant is that the rider should not push their seat in an artificial way as an attempt to stay in the saddle. The rider must learn to relax and allow their hips to follow the motion a little bit but the key is to RELAX. As far as collected canter goes, assuming you are schooling at LEAST second level when collected canter is introduced, then there are times, like in medium canter to push your seat to encourage the horse to engage and reach. I hope this makes sense! 💜
Hi, I've come across this technique in a book and wanted to know what it meant. Your video has been really helpful. I feel bad for your horse though, the poor thing had to stand motionless the whole time. I don't see what standing next to a horse has accomplished. Don't get me wrong, I am sure you're a great instructor as many people have already pointed out. I am just concerned for your horse.
Hi! Thank you so much for watching my video and for your comment. There is no need to be concerned for my horse having to stand still obediently for 7 minutes while I film a video. Personally, I think more horses should stand still obediently. Ground manners are very important. Standing quietly for 6 minutes will not hurt any horse. Someday, hopefully not, you may need for a horse to stand quietly for that amount of time to tend to a wound. My horses live outside 24/7 with shelter and unlimited quality forage. I never deal with lameness, colic, ulcers, etc. I do appreciate your concern though. Thank you so much for caring and of course for watching my videos. ❤️
@@DeannaThompsonCorby Hi Deanna! Thank you for correcting me. Most of my knowledge about horses comes from movies and books; I have learnt a lot by reading your comment. Good luck
here are some tips to sit your canter more easier, 1: move with the saddle, as the horses front legs move forward, slide your body with the saddle. this helps for sitting 2: do lunge lessons, they help keep balance and you do exercises such as trotting with no reins. it makes you aware about the amount of balance you need 3:at the same time your moving your body with the saddle, practice keeping your shoulders open and chin up and keeping your shoulders as still as you can. it benefits greatly! now try limiting your body movement. hope this helps, practice all these until you are comfortable, then try the style of canter you were originally trying to sit! this benefits greatly it posture, sitting, and balance! also, if any of these don't seem familiar to you, don't come after me! EVERYONE HAS DIFF. TRAINING TECHNIQUES! :)
Lmao I basically can’t stop myself from post trotting because every time I trot I instantly post after the first few steps. I hope this helps me with getting better at cantering because I’m just learning how to canter with my lesson horse who is usually calm but she spooks at her own shadow before realizing it’s just her shadow.
My instructor has me learn to canter off of a lunge line, because the horses they have (since sadly I don’t have my own) there speed up on a lunge line, and they are not balanced very well. What do I doooo?? 😂 I’m not afraid of cantering, I’m very excited to continue with it, but I struggle with keeping my lower leg solid
Keep practicing use good technique that you're trying to learn and you'll get it. sdn appointed out you need to move your hands to be in rhythm with the horse soap being very particular and learning to be very good at the walk-in following the horse's head in mouth it will help your canter work.
I usually have really good balance but my horse is good at balancing me and herself at the canter so that definitely helps but my other horse can hardly balance herself so it’s up to me to balance her and myself.
I never do lunge lessons I don't see much learning in them I think someone who wants to learn should be able to move on their own and learn how to change the rein in a faster pace. I have done weaving in trot already and I tried lunge lessons but it's just boring and not enough freedom. Another thing is you also learn more about balance. I've been riding for 2-3 months and I'm on jumping positions/fast pace lessons.
This is easy when the stirrup is long “right amount long” but my instructor tells me to canter with short stirrups , it looks impossible, i have to hold with my groins and knees (lock on the horse) to avoid bouncing and loosing balance . I dont what is he trying to establish.
Abdulaziz Alkhaja although I am not an expert, I will say this, do NOT grip with your knees. It sets you so, so, so far back with your riding and is a really hard habit to break. When you grip with your knees your entire position becomes stiff and your entire body comes out of the saddle. Instead try to elongate your thighs and lower leg, wrapping around your horse. This will make you much more secure In the saddle
Abdulaziz Alkhaja and I had to ride with short stirrups for the first time in a while the other day. I’m glad to say that even with the short stirrups I was able to actively sit the trot and engage my body because I practiced so much with Longer stirrups.
The Horse is a legit mood.
😂😂😂 That’s his constant state of being. He’s a potato 🥔

I have problems with the pumping too.. I do that mainly when i feel like they're slowing down.. Thanks!! :)
It seems like I'm not controlling him, he is!😁🧐
I hope you'll help me through your videos. Thank you🥰🐴🐴💓
Every master started out as a disaster. You will get better. ❤️

Thank u😘😘
Great video!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Feel free to email me at: deannacorbydressage@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you!
Kindly please make a video how to control when horse suddenly turn and how to balance yourself
That’s a great idea! I will put it on the list. What I can say for now is to do your best to learn your own independent balance by taking lunge lessons on a safe horse and from an educated trainer so that you may be prepared for unexpected moments like the one you mentioned. Thanks for watching my videos! 💛
The hourse looks so nice I wish to have a hourse like that
When I canter I literally sit on my tail bone (not sure what it's actually called) whilst leaning up to get a balanced canter, how can I do that without sitting like that?
When you say "hips" when describing upper and lower half of rider body, do you specifically intend to refer to the pelvis or the hips?
My mums forcing me into canter after falling off and being stood on my horse . I’m terrified. Maybe you should make a video about anxiety on horses
Learning to ride is your own personal journey. Sometimes things take a while. I would suggest having a calm, honest conversation with your mom and tell her exactly how you feel. I think that will help. Good luck. ❤️
Great video madam
Thanks for watching! 💛
Love the idea of lunge lessons. Being able to concentrate on your position and not worry about solely having to control the horse. 😊
They are sooooo valuable!
I keep wanting to slide of sideways to the inside of the circle when round pen, I don’t know why. My only guess is maybe I put uneven pressure in the stirrups? It honestly feels like I’m being sucked in by a vortex it feels that powerful
Hello! I have a pretty good position and seat but I struggle to stay balanced in the corners in my canter! Any tips?
You’re probably leaning to the inside and dropping your inside shoulder in the corners. Try looking in facing your chest a little bit to the outside in every corner. It’s too hard to tell without seeing a video of your riding but give that a try and let me know how it works!
@@DeannaThompsonCorby thankyou! I will try that!
What if you’re learning half-seat?
It’s my first time hear!
I can do sitting trot bareback
Bareback is a fantastic way to learn really excellent balance! It’s easier, on a way, because you do not have a floor (your stirrups) getting in your way and pushing you back up against the bounce!
@@DeannaThompsonCorby and my pony is young so we learn together
When I canter I’m bouncing up and down 🤣
I need to learn to sit back and actually sit in the saddle ;-;
Yas
@@DeannaThompsonCorby understood! Thank you for the quick reply that's pretty awesome :)
Good luck
here are some tips to sit your canter more easier,
1: move with the saddle, as the horses front legs move forward, slide your body with the saddle. this helps for sitting
2: do lunge lessons, they help keep balance and you do exercises such as trotting with no reins. it makes you aware about the amount of balance you need
3:at the same time your moving your body with the saddle, practice keeping your shoulders open and chin up and keeping your shoulders as still as you can. it benefits greatly! now try limiting your body movement.
hope this helps, practice all these until you are comfortable, then try the style of canter you were originally trying to sit! this benefits greatly it posture, sitting, and balance! also, if any of these don't seem familiar to you, don't come after me!
You will figure it out soon enough! 💛 I had a horse that once spooked at the sound of her own poop hitting the ground. 😳😅😂
Sarah Posey thanks!
I've been riding for 2-3 months and I'm on jumping positions/fast pace lessons.
fell off yesterday because I was too floppy lol it hurt
Another NAP!!!!!! I love Roman!!!!
I started cantering yesterday & didn’t even use a lunge line
Way to go!! 💜
Deanna Corby thank you!❤️
I have galloped in England am I was on a good horse but I ride in Switzerland and I find it hard to trust the horse
Hey denna it’s Jillian Jones I love you
Ilysm!! ❤️
Why my horse doesn’t go from trot to canter? I’m struggling with him so much
Well come village horse safari rajasthan
