Hey i have a question when I move to the canter, do I keep my outer leg behind the girth for the duration of the canter, or when I start the canter only and then put it back over the girth?
This is so helpful. I took lessons for 6 years in college and was cantering around and jumping courses with ease, but then I had to take a 4-year break. I just started lessons again and am having so much trouble keeping the lesson horse cantering. I just realized it’s because of this! I’m gripping so hard with my legs and my feet are getting shoved up into the stirrups. And then I feel that I can’t safely move my lower leg to give a kick to keep the horse in a canter because it means I have to stop gripping. But instead I just need to sit back and relax and stretch down into my heels. When I’ve tried this, I’ve suddenly felt too loose and floppy, but I think I just hadn’t given myself a chance to find and flow with the movement of the horse and instead reacted with fear & tension.
This video hit home on all levels. I do all the things I shouldn't !! I've been aware of them for a while and we've been working on my position to try and get better. This video is really useful to help visualise what I'm doing and why. Brilliant 👏
Ahh my instructor keeps telling me to use rhythmic squeezes with my inside leg to keep the lesson horse cantering!!! No wonder the lesson horses start trotting when I don't keep on doing this. Going to implement your steps instead at my next lesson. You are such a gifted teacher, thank you Amelia

I've recently moved from recreational riding to co-leasing a sport horse and it seems I forgot how to canter. I grip, I tip, I lose balance and I get frightened. The horse is super nice and willing, but also quite forward and surprisingly spooky. I guess it will take a while before I feel confident again, and this video provides the mantra I need "sit back, heels down... sit back, heels down". Thanks Amelia!
This has been a problem for me for ages; leg grips & goes back whilst the rest of me goes forward. Yesterday I was working at canter in the school, horse jigged at something in the hedge and I ended up on the deck. A friend has just sent me this link & how I wish I’d seen it before! Given me something to work with. Thank you!
I've been watching a bunch of your videos, and I find them helpful! Thanks! Two months ago, after 20 years of once or twice a week lessons on school horses, I started leasing a retired show jumper. She's more than I'm used to, and except for being as safe and sane as a schoolmaster, she's 180 degrees different from the school horses (more go than whoa!). I'm trying to improve sitting her canter, since she has a big movement. And yes, I'm used to pushing the school horses along almost every step to keep the canter, so I have to change some "bad" habits. With her, the canter is her reward, she'd run around at the canter all day looking for the next jump off! She's also hard to get back to the walk after the canter because it's not as much fun for her. So we're doing a lot of transitions, and if she stays at the walk, say, for one lap, or the long side of the arena, etc, whatever I choose, I'll let her canter again. The more I improve my position, the better for her, and the more I can let her canter and be happy. I'm enjoying your videos and emails!
This video has really helped me understand what may be causing me to bounce in my canter. My horse is still young (coming up for 6 years old) and is still learning but he is so good and wants to do more. Hoping these tips will improve my seat and help make our training so much better. Thanks Amelia
This is what i struggle with a lot. So theoretically this makes sense, I just don't know how to put it into practice. I understand the not gripping and quick bumping but being able to actually not grip and putting heels down and doing independently in real life I am having a hard time wrapping my head around bow to actually do.
Go in circular motions with your hips and focus on being stable in your core, that helped me a lot. You can also do ab exercises to help your core carry your body weight.
I think it may start in childhood just riding like wild without knowing techniques. Just flying like the wind!!that’s a hard one to break like relearning to walk or ride a bike!!
Thank you so much! I am doing a free bootcamp and would love to have you join. Here is the link: amelianewcombdressage.com/free-online-riding-bootcamp/?UA-cam&Strides+2025
Thanks Amelia! I continue to work on being able to isolate and move my body parts independently from one another. Like how you broke down the little quick kick and heel down move. I also find that by consciously moving my toes in my boots it helps my legs stay looser :)

I love your videos Amelia thank you so much. We were taught to ride the canter gripping the saddle. In a lesson we had coins put between our knees and saddle to grip tightly. Lo and behold if you dropped your coin!! ... We all did.. I have always felt that I was never a great rider and never would be. The only time I felt really good was when I was jumping. I now understand why, (when my horse bucked) , I was so unbalanced, I came off.. on my head. I now suffer the consequences of a bad fall. Keep up these great videos, always learning something new. 🇿🇦
I have been struggling with canter depart keeping all aids organized, proper bend, and transitioning to canter from first request. Your videos have been very helpful and I will keep watching ! Thank you!
Glad I came across this one! This is my challenge now (have been riding / taking lessons for the past 4 months and learning the transitions. I tend to struggle with the balance when my horse breaks into canter. =)
This is what I struggle with at the trot as well. I am working on this as I rehab from surgery. We worked at the walk for two weeks, now at the trot. It is such good work to make me aware of the moment I grip! Canter will be next! Thank you Amelia!

I know I've been doing this for quite awhile now - my Arabian can be quite explosive at times, spook spins are not fun. I was playing around with letting go with my legs last summer using the kick/release as demontrated with some success. I've also caught myself doing it with my Andalusian because he could be behind the leg when I was initially riding him. Now that he's fit, I can let my legs off him, sit and try to just relax into the movement. My new trainer has been very helpful in that regard. Mirrors and video are very helpful to help correct some of these bad habits even if you don't see the video until hours or days after the ride that was filmed. I'm learning to sit deeper on my horse, take leg off and ride with less tension across my shoulders. A work in progress :-)
That sounds like really positive progress! Such a contrast with the two horses, but that will ultimately improve your riding! Totally agree about mirrors, and it's great that your trainer is effective!

I have one horse that I am working on this with... he just has a ginormous canter and I am stillearning how to stay with him. I often get grippy when I start losing my balance and get ahead of the motion... or maybe I'm behind it? 🤔 either way it gets ugly super fast! 🙈😄. He's teaching me for sure how to keep my legs off! Definitely helping with the other horses as well! Great video and demo! Thanks! 🦄❤

I finally get why the reason the horse falls back to trot. Its also really hard for me bc im quite stiff in my back. I used to ride lots of horses with a small canter step, so riding this horse with bigger steps makes it hard for me to find his rythm. Trying my best to improve every lesson i follow the manege every week. 😊 i will try to apply these tips. ❤

Hey Farah, I'm not sure if I do- I don't think I have that one yet! (sorry I have so many sometimes I forget whats in each one!!). Make sure that your horse is responsive to your leg aids in the walk and trot, so that if you start to feel like he's about to break you can encourage him forward. Making sure your seat is following and not gripping is important too. Check out my upcoming free rider position webinar, I think it could be benefitial to you! bit.ly/3LqMFLX
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage hi Amelia, thanks for your reply, the gripping video helped a lot, and I always keep in mind your tips about shoulders and arms as well, my canter has become so much better because of these tips, thanks for the link as well. 😊
I have been struggling recently with my canter… a lot of bouncing and balance issues that I never had before. This video has answered so many of my questions and gives me a great idea what to try next!! In hunter/jumper seat, can these same techniques be used for maintaining a canter?
HI Lisa, thanks so much for watching! FOr hunter jumper, as your seat is slightly out of the saddle, the balance and weight would distribute to your heels with your upper legs holding you in place, but the same principle for not gripping still applies!

Yeah this is great an all, but but does it apply to western riding? I see way to many of these folks in broke english horses in these videos talking about trot canter etc. Nobody talks about how to ride in a gallop and to get your horse to stop that gallop. I gripped my horse in the gallop and we were gone in the wind. Then when I stopped riding the gallop I was bouncing in my seat and he was still going 20 30 yards. Do you grip with your calf in the canter or not? What about an older horse(10-14) that has speedy canter or fast trot that's bouncing you?
Hey Blyfactor, Yes the principles are the same in both English and Western. To answer your first question: How to stop from a canter or gallop, you will need to incorporate more half-halts and build balance and strength in your horse so that you can come back more quickly from the canter/gallop. And for your question regarding gripping: no, you do not grip with your calf in the canter. You want to remain balanced and with the horse (ie not bouncing) by using your core. :)
This was so helpful! My question is- are you kicking with both your feet at the same time in canter or inside leg only (with strong outside rein)? I am trying to overcome an extreme “pumping” motion that I appear to be doing on canter, and I suspect it’s because I’m squeezing my legs as you say!
Just the inside leg! Try thinking about letting your hips move and keeping your shoulders still (but still let your elbows follow) to help yourself sit quieter.
Would this be also true with lunging? When your horse is in the canter he should just keep going without nagging with the whip while you stand in the center?
Huge thanks for this video...it came at such perfect timing. I've only just found you, your email subscription and your channel! It's so useful! Should you be doing any videos on keeping the lower leg still or step by step guide for leg yield (still unsure if my leg should be on or behind the girth! 🙈) I'd love to see them. Thank you 😊

So glad this helped!

I've recently moved from recreational riding to co-leasing a sport horse and it seems I forgot how to canter. I grip, I tip, I lose balance and I get frightened. The horse is super nice and willing, but also quite forward and surprisingly spooky. Thank you!
Sorry to hear about your fall- but I'm glad this video helped!
Thank you for your channel. I'm happy to see that a woman teaching in a man dominated venue..... I really like your method. Thanks for you help.
Thank you for being here!
This video has really helped me understand what may be causing me to bounce in my canter. My horse is still young (coming up for 6 years old) and is still learning but he is so good and wants to do more. Hoping these tips will improve my seat and help make our training so much better. Thanks Amelia

I've got the same problem, which is the main reason I'm not allowed to gallop I hope we improve 😅

Thank you, Amelia! This video is very helpful. Now I understand better what my horse breaks in canter.
So Glad to hear that!
When you say give him a kick then heel down, is that on the outside or inside or both legs?
Thanks Amelia! I continue to work on being able to isolate and move my body parts independently from one another. Like how you broke down the little quick kick and heel down move. I also find that by consciously moving my toes in my boots it helps my legs stay looser :)
That so great Mary, I'm so happy the video helped, and thanks for watching!

Very helpful, I have a hard time getting my mare into a nice forward trot to enable a nice canter transition!
Helped me ! Thank you. Consciously NOW I am not gripping and my horse actually seems happier !!!! Thank you for being awesome.
Wonderful! So glad it helped you!
Super helpful. I just figured out I was gripping badly so trying hard to fix it. Thank you!
Glad it helped!

Glad it helped! Little bits at a time, you got this.

This is what I struggle with at the trot as well. I am working on this as I rehab from surgery. We worked at the walk for two weeks, now at the trot. It is such good work to make me aware of the moment I grip! Canter will be next! Thank you Amelia!

Thanks for guidance

Hi Amelia, lovely and helpful videos, I'm wondering if you have a video on canter falling back to trot video? Thanks
Great info!
Glad it was helpful!

Yes so many grip and have spurs makes me cringe. I often do “legs away at all gaits to ensure I’m not gripping 😊
Yes exactly!
Can I ask you how do I get my horse to counter my horse do I go real slow with my horse to counter thank you Nannette
Thank you 😊
Hi Rachel, first- welcome to our community. I have step-by-step leg yeild guides in some of my courses and workshops, but this video on youtube might help. ua-cam.com/video/VO_W9H4ReyM/v-deo.html (and leg should be at the girth!). Any tips for an inside leg that braces forward in canter?
Great question! Try thinking about keeping a tennis ball behind your knee. This will help engage your hamstring which will keep your leg in position.
so do i keep my outside leg back the entire canter? n what is it that is happening with the inside rein and i jus pullin on that one a bit x
Outside leg stays back, inside rein is reserved for gentle direction and supplying
