Guys, I know there was PG Mortal Kombat stuff and Robocop and Police Academy cartoons. I’m aware and watched them. The point of the video was that the source material was rated R which is also the point of my post.
Ripley's flamethrower was upside down, her action feature was the little peg would go in her pocket and when you twisted her at the waist it would push the peg and the flame would come out. Had that toy as a kid, unfortunately ended up losing the flamethrower.

Yeah, the MPAA system is screwed up enough on its own. It gets even screwier when you factor in the rating systems of other countries, which have their own criteria and ideas on what is appropriate/inappropriate.
Not suprising really since there are other cartoon shows based of R-rated movies such as Rambo, Conan the Barbarian, RoboCop, Toxic Avenger (the cartoon was called Toxic Crusaders instead) & Highlander.
Well, if the Police Academy toys get a mention for being based on a kid-friendly cartoon based on a rated R movie, the Toxic Crusader toys should get a mention for being based on a kid-friendly cartoon based on a rated R horror movie that includes a child's head getting crushed under the car of one of the movie's antagonists.
Despite the ridiculous levels of censorship in kids' programming in the 80s, the decade was truly a lawless wasteland when it came to transitioning hard-R movies into cartoons and toys. You'd think the 1979 brouhaha over the aborted Alien line would've signaled caution, but the 80s gave us toys and cartoons based on movies so violent, they had to be CUT to get an R in the first place. See RoboCop, and Toxic Avenger...a movie that features a close-up of a child's head being run over by a car. 😕
Man this video gave me too much feels. I remember having the Arnold T-800 and a lot of those Kenner Aliens. My father used to buy me those everytime he find a new model. Great video! I think toy and movie execs realised that kids were getting to see most of these on home video. This is why Highlander, Rambo and Robocop generated toys and cartoons too. Plus the 1994 timing of Kenner’s ‘Predator’ series ties in with the syndication of the two Predator movies. When I was a kid I had the Terminator toy where you could put the T-800 skelton into a mold of skin and then peel off the skin. It was cool but a huge mess.
Although I wasn't allowed to see ALIEN until I was a little older! I was a huge fan of monster toys and got the Kenner ALIEN figure for Christmas in 1979. Glad you covered a little of the history of that toy.

These have been really fun to watch, & I anticipate each episode, Great job on these Dan, can't wait for the next Episode!
One thing to consider is that all these movies eventually got edited TV versions. I wasn't allowed to see Predator unedited as a kid, but I taped and wore out the TV version and got at least one of those figures.
Not gonna lie, I used to watch the alien films and loved the Kenner line and their unique designs, especially the snake alien My childhood was weird but I loved it
Something to remember about 'back in the day'.... While the shows were rated R at the theater and video, There WERE other versions too. Back then the network cable stations would show off an 'edited for Television' version. I couldn't see R rated movies, but with some fancy editing that cut out the swearing and sex.... I had vhs tapes of Lethal Weapon, Rambo 1 & 2, Robocop, Aliens, Terminator and a lot more. Therefore when "I" saw a Terminator figure or a Rambo figure... they weren't some unknown quantity. They were from movies I had seen and loved. Even if I didnt' realize how much swearing and violence and nudity the director's MEANT there to be in them... I had stlll seen the story and the characters. Honestly, I wish that was still a thing. I'd love to introduce my nephews to some shows that I loved... that frankly are NOT acceptable for little boys. Nowdays they just show them on the other 400 channels that can get away with more and really don't cut anything anymore. :(
There was also the Batman Returns line that I remember because of the protests about McDonalds also having toys in the happy meals for an R rated movie while toystores got hit as well...
There was a big figural game for the movie Alligator. I don’t remember if Grizzly was rated R or PG, but there was a rubber figure and a Collegeville Halloween costume. The Incredible Melting Man was definitely R-rated, and Collegeville made a Halloween costume for that film, while Imagineering made a makeup kit aimed at kids. Mego was going to make a game based on The Car, but there is disagreement as to whether it was ever produced. They made a TV commercial for it. The very R-rated Mad Doctor of Blood Island had a rubber figure in 1969. I could probably think of others if I thought about it.
I still love this video. Even tho TMNT and MOTU will always be my fav properties, this episode of Toysplosion shines to me much more than those of the aforementioned properties. But you never revisited this Dan. It's been five years 😢 I myself know of a few toylines that'd fit this category too aside from *fake coughs* Robocop
You're probably unaware of toy lines based on previous tv shows from r-rated movies Planet Of The Apes and Logan's Run in the 70s, when I was a kid. Sears had foot-tall Apes figures, and Mego made the short Logan line. I have neither, but I distinctly remember Dr. Zaius in his beige outfit with tiny snap buttoned vinyl coat.
Great video!! well done!! I also have thought about how funny toys based on R rated films (or any film not so kid friendly) is, too. Some others are: toxic crusader(s), Rambo (already mentioned in comments), swamp thing, Killer Tomatoes, Bill and Ted (maybe? wasnt rated R, but not really a kids movie.) I suppose it may be a different video, cartoons that were based on R rated films that got toy lines...
@MarvelandDC379 Today's PG-13 is PG, "hard" or "soft". PG is G. R is still R. The whole concept of the PG-13 rating was to introduce a category to distinguish movies that featured material a bit too edgy for the standard PG-rating (usually violence) but not intense enough for an R (e.g., "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Gremlins"). The rating was used appropriately for a while, but sometime in the 90's, it became clear the PG-13 rating was the most marketable; around this same time, PG movies increasingly became family-oriented. The association with being kid-friendly stuck to PG, and thusly the G rating was rendered all but extinct. So, what began as a nuanced rating to bridge a gap between PG and R has instead become a replacement for PG, shifting PG's function to G and essentially eliminating G (which is now only used for things aimed at very young children).
@@dreamlandnightmareThe G rating had a bit an interesting history as well when the MPAA rating system was first implemented. Stuff that was rated G back then would’ve definitely been rated PG or PG-13 today like the first Planet of the Apes movie had a G rating.
I have to thank you for the tmnt video I wouldn’t have known they were already released without your video I have them all except for April and splinter while I’m at it just thank you for making all your videos I’ve watched you every day for the past 5 years
I had some of the T2 toys despite not watching the film until later in my adult years. Although, I do wish I had those Police Academy toys. Those and the Beetlejuice toys looked like tremendous fun that I regret missing out on as a kid.
Love this retrospective sadly we never got a Sargent Callahan in the police academy figure line 🫠 And also that last part in the video when you said that you’ll be revisiting the subject again, is that a tease of some kind 🤔
Loved this! I still have my Mahoney, along with a few Predators, aliens and Terminators. I use to have og Rambo and Robocop too, thanks for posting this.
Not sure about Marv, but their was a frakus in 1999, when Trendmasters released action figures for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. One of the figures was of Austin in his underwear with a base that had a recording of his line, "Do I make you horny baby?" A mother that was shopping with her son saw this and complained so the figure was quickly pulled from retail at major stores.
I think the aforementioned Sin City toy was made by Macfarlane Toys. It courted controversy because (a) toys for adults were a fairly new thing at the time and (b) remain an alien concept to the moral guardians.
Great video! In Canada we have similar rating for the exception of a 14A and children can be accompanied by adults to rated R movies. I loved the robocop and terminator toys!
Dan, i never get tired of watching your content. Another amazing episode. I loved the inclusion of Jason too. And as usual after watching your videos I'm off to spend spend some money on even more toys
The exploding T 1000 was cool for the first few days. Then it wore out, and you had to hold it together because it would just fall apart. The Mobile Assault Vehicle and Heavy Metal Cycle were pretty cool too.

One thing to consider is that all these movies eventually got edited TV versions. I wasn't allowed to see Predator unedited as a kid, but I taped and wore out the TV version and got at least one of those figures.
Not gonna lie, I used to watch the alien films and loved the Kenner line and their unique designs, especially the snake alien
My childhood was weird but I loved it
Years later and now we’re getting Alien and Predators toys for kids again thanks to Lanard and Walmart and this makes me happy
Nostalgic! Thanks Pixel Dan!
Kenner made some awesome Adult movie toys for kids. While I miss them I'm glad that Neca is remaking a lot of those old R rated film toys.
I still love this video. Even tho TMNT and MOTU will always be my fav properties, this episode of Toysplosion shines to me much more than those of the aforementioned properties. But you never revisited this Dan. It's been five years 😢
I myself know of a few toylines that'd fit this category too aside from *fake coughs* Robocop
Always a great subject. Thanks Pixel Dan!
My introduction to this subject was Rambo toys. Rambo! Wow!
Love the Alien toys and i am building an army of the Kenner t800 figures. Great video!
Loved this video :D I got a couple of each line :D terminator, aliens and predator were the hit when I was a kid :D great video brother
Awesome Dan i love the blast from the past
Great video!! well done!! I also have thought about how funny toys based on R rated films (or any film not so kid friendly) is, too. Some others are:
toxic crusader(s), Rambo (already mentioned in comments), swamp thing, Killer Tomatoes, Bill and Ted (maybe? wasnt rated R, but not really a kids movie.) I suppose it may be a different video, cartoons that were based on R rated films that got toy lines...
I like that the Neca Predator figures has the same box design as the original toys!
Toysplosion whooooo! What an awesome topic Dan epic video! 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
If you want to watch a pg-13 movie from the 90s watch cool world just saying it should have been rated R
Back then PG-13 was a soft R. Nowadays PG-13 is a hard PG.
I thought Cool World was a motion picture back in the 80's and was Rated-R.
@MarvelandDC379
Today's PG-13 is PG, "hard" or "soft".
I have to thank you for the tmnt video I wouldn’t have known they were already released without your video I have them all except for April and splinter while I’m at it just thank you for making all your videos I’ve watched you every day for the past 5 years
I had some of these as a kid, loved them and didn’t think about weird it was.
I had some of the T2 toys despite not watching the film until later in my adult years. Although, I do wish I had those Police Academy toys. Those and the Beetlejuice toys looked like tremendous fun that I regret missing out on as a kid.
Love this retrospective sadly we never got a Sargent Callahan in the police academy figure line 🫠
And also that last part in the video when you said that you’ll be revisiting the subject again, is that a tease of some kind 🤔
Loved this! I still have my Mahoney, along with a few Predators, aliens and Terminators. I use to have og Rambo and Robocop too, thanks for posting this.
Wasn't there a frakus made about a MARV toy from SIN CITY ?? The toy was featuring Marv as he was getting the chair...... now I want that toy so bad !
Excellent video! Hopefully there will be a part 2 featuring other properties like RoboCop, Rambo et al.
I sure as heck know there are those of you who watched these on TV or through your older siblings when you were a child haha. You know you shouldn't have but it was so fun going to school the next day to talk about it with your friends and classmates.
I had alot of these when I was a kid and now as an adult collector I have the necca reimagined versions of the old Kenner figures.
