Well you're right about one thing. Hush's success does come from Jim Lee's artwork.
jim’s art is too oversaturated imo
@@randomt800kiddo2 I Think it’s the Perfect Tone of Saturation, The Artwork has to Convey the Story as well, so it’s all Subjective whether an Artist’s work fits within a Story.
Yeah the art was too beautiful
@@Elricsedric As a middle schooler, I enjoyed the story. As an adult...well Loeb could've done better if he wasn't going through his own emotional baggage
I wouldn't say Lee is my favorite Batman artist of all time (Graham Nolan is a much better candidate). But nonetheless his stuff is stupendous. I like the way he's able to capture the "classic" Batman look of the comics from the 1970s to the '90s while adding a modern edge. Even so, I do think his artwork is too vibrant and Marvel-like, failing to capture the film noir look and feel of Gotham.
There's something I can't resist remarking upon, though. Lee's depiction of Vicki Vale is...well, it's something else! No vestige of sweet girl-next-door Kim Basinger there! People are always talking about how much Frank Miller objectified female characters, but what Lee did to Vale is on a completely different level. He made her an impossibly hot, redheaded Cindy Crawford look alike, standing around in a bra and panties so exotic and intricately designed they make one think the Elves in Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS took over Victoria's Secret. They should make that underwear in real life!
The sus mad lad actually being shush while reading the Hush
I hate the whispering, but I’ll respectfully watch the video for Smokey.
I don’t it’s totally ASMR style.. and I like whispering I don’t why it’s just sounds nice.. I think 🤔
I seem to be in the minority, cause I hate it.
I tried to watch it but it’s too much
@@evancook2507 yah i cant
It was actually very relaxing to me
I love Hush because it perfectly displays Batman’s strengths as a character and we get to see his thoughts on the family and friends around him. It shows his fighting capability, detective skills, paranoia and even has his origin in one page. Hush as a villain sucks but he’s just a catalyst to see inside Batman’s thinking.
I love the idea of the story and the depiction of batman is spot on, except the part where batman hurts Salina.
Hush is not that interesting by himself. I think that's also the issue too. It's no wonder people would have preferred him to be actually jason todd
@@anthonyt1t5Well, it was Jason Todd for like two pages
The only redeeming thing about this story, and I mean the ONLY redeeming thing is that it shows Riddler can be the mastermind behind behind a huge story. Even if it makes no sense, I'd like to see more of the real villains be the mastermind behind elaborate schemes. Just have them make sense and enough of the brand new villains who are now the big baddies of Gotham
I respect Jeph Loeb's ambition with the story and the attempted scope but found the villain's need for improbable events happening perfectly too stupid to be attributed to good strategy. Too many things which were out of his control had to be spot on for his grand revenge scheme to work.
I think Jeph Loeb wrote Hush in the same manner Frank Miller wrote DKSB
I think Loeb just wrote whatever Jim Lee wanted to draw
@@dannyolortegui3776more so how Kevin Smith wrote Daredevil Guardian Devil
To answer your questions:
1) They changed Hush to being the Riddler the whole time. Thomas Elliot pretty much died.
2) Gordon is Jack the Ripper
If you know basic conspiracy theories about Jack the Ripper (the police chief being Jack) it was way too predictable
And my wife left me
Finally someone said it i don't understand why people keep recommending it
Wait did you say Ultimatum is better than hush? Now, I see why you had to whisper. Lol
fortunately he did not say that identity crisis is better then hush, otherwise I might have to unsubscribe, I'm the owner of both btw
Ya lol that's quite the take
That was a joke, right?
@@IcoOst wait what identify crisis was fire definitely better than hush imo
The only good thing that the animated version is the love scene of Bruce and Selina. On the other hand, the comic book only has the art of Jim Lee to like with, I get the plot but the way it was executed was sloppy at best.
I agree. I was really looking forward to this when I read about this and that Loeb and Lee were going to do a Batman story. The artwork was great, but the story was VERY disappointing! Tommy Elliot was (And still is, although later writers have made him better. He still sucks, though.) totally contrived and just-ugh! Also, how exactly did he fix Harold’s BACK and Two-Face’s face if he’s just a brain surgeon? If he already got away with murder as a kid, why would he risk his career to just get back at Bruce? It didn’t make sense. Especially since he knows his identity, he could have ruined him in multiple ways (Leaking his identity, screwing up his surgery, etc.). And how can Harvey Dent free THE JOKER from Arkham ? That’s a stretch even for comics. Yeah, this story was a HUGE letdown, especially with Loeb at the helm!
Smokey, the hush movie was ok but that’s all it deserves because they changed multiple things in the film adaptation. From things like it being Bane kidnapping a kid in the beginning instead of Croc to the ending where Hush is revealed to actually be the Riddler not Thomas Elliot.
Hush movie sucked
The hushed whispering is really relaxing for some reason, I’ve returned to this more then I normally do with Smokey’s videos.
Ikr it was relaxing this is a really good asmr
Pretty harsh comment section. I actually kind of like the whispering, it’s an amusing joke and tbh makes it very easy to listen to. Also, great content!
No. An okay joke gets old really fast.
If it were like 5 or 10 mins of it but the whole damn video. Miss me with that
Because of the opening I’m imagining tiny fedora-shaped microphones hidden around a house.
Didn't they later explain that croc was mutated when he thought that he'll get a cure and superman was under control of kryptonite poision.
That was an off story in an unrelated comic like Bruce revealing to Tim that he trusted Selina enough to unmask himself
I feel like the people who bring up hush a lot are people who don’t really read Batman but want it to seem like they read Batman.
Hit the nail on the head
@@billyboleson2830 I actually did enjoy Batman though being ruthless towards his villains in Hush especially how he knocked riddler off his chair in the ending. It shows how Batman can be compassionate but also not forgiving and his villains need humbling no matter how sympathetic or tragic.
Knightfall was really good. This seems like a rehash of that. Jim Lee is probably why it's remembered well by some, and Hush is a cool name.
I can’t believe you got hacked by... *THE LIGHT BRINGER*
I liked Hush a lot as a kid but as a I get older I realize the story sucks.
this channel is so underrated, it deserves a lot of subs!!!
Dang this banger of a video dropped on a day I was hoping something exciting would happen! Ask and you shall receive :)
Something exciting comes from whispers
It's a mystery without any red herrings. What kind of mystery is that? Also, there's already a villain who hates Bruce Wayne personally: Roman Sionis/Black Mask.
There are several red herrings in that story... Harvey Dent, Jason Todd, Clayface, Tommy Elliot, and then Tommy getting killed by the Joker and thus removed from the suspects...
At the time some people were actually complaining that there were too many red herrings. And then number one suspect while the run was going on was Harvey Dent.
Tommy himself turned out to be be a bit of a red herring anyway, since the real mastermind/Big Bad was the Riddler, who was eliminated earlier in the story when he pulled a boring heist without any enigmas involved.
I think Jim Lee drew the Joker better in Batman and Robin All Stars than in Hush. If you look at artwork between Hush and Batman and Robin All Stars, you'll see a few differences in Lee's work here and there
the best batman story is to me is under the red hood
Ngl the whispering ruined the video, it was funny at first but you kept it going faaaar too long, maybe one day in the future you’ll remake the video but props to you
the image of the window lowering to reveal linkara is the funniest fucking thing ive ever seen.
I've really been enjoying these comic book story videos you've been doing.
Keep up the great work my man.
I read that Loeb actually intended to have JASON TODD as Hush, but DC editorial nixed that! As much as I hated Jason coming back, it would actually have been better (And made more sense.) than what we got. Given that Jason came back later for the next big Batman story anyway, it just might have worked here.
the whispering is the worst gimmick you've done in any of your videos
Stopped at 3 minutes because of the whispering
Can never take a man seriously with an opinion when he says that ultimatum is the same quality as Hush 😂😂😂
We all know Linkara gets mad when you make fun of him. Hope he doesn't find this video.
I really hate the whispering. I just stopped playing this one altogether. A shame because the content was good.
why would you even write a script just to take a huge dump on it.
Agreed, the art is awesome and I like Catwoman/Batman romance, but the story was already done way better in The Long Halloween
How many goddam villains are in this story 😂😂
Yeah hush is super overrated. Not a bad story, but super predictable and boring. It's just an inferior version of The Long Halloween, with the killer turning out to be a character you previously suspected but who died earlier in the book (exactly what happens in Long Halloween)
So here’s a question: What was the actual point of this whole thing? None of the criminals were actually doing anything particularly off brand. Why was Batman acting like any of this was out of the ordinary? This whole thing just seems like a bunch of set pieces strung together with no actual reasoning behind it all.
Smoky ASMR
Bruh I just saw a video on how Hush is such an overrated ass villain 😭😭😭
The Hush movie is somehow worse than the comic because, spoilers down below:
Turns out Elliot was never Hush and it was Riddler the whole time, he does because he was sick of being treated like a C-Lister or something. That hurts me coz Riddler is my favourite villain of all time and in the film they constantly call him a pathetic c lister and a shit villain
One thing about this story that seemed dumb is the fact that his cape is used countless times to glide around in the comics. Also, he could shot off another grapple line...contrived story telling
What about his cowl? Is it just clothed? His cowl isnt made of metal?
Rip my nigga Pym
11:00 - 11:25 You are not alone in this shit.
FFS Reed Richard’s solution to freeing Sue when she is under the brainwashing of Psycho-Man as Malice was to slap her in the face and tell her to knock it off with her womanly emotions.
. . . And yet Hank Pym IS remembered as the wife beater despite having a mental breakdown relating to his identity disorder.
God writers just can’t acknowledge how much of assholes the A List heroes really are.
Or maybe writers come up with shit ideas to begin with, in character assasinations. That's something to consider. Writers write characters dumbass lol.
The ASMR bit, "Batman chokes out Joker"👀👀👀
Good stuff! I do actually like Batman Hush, do i think the highest best Batman story? Not really, but it sure is way better than the terrible 52verse animated film
I always thought Hush was crappy, I'm glad I'm not alone. The only thing that ever interested me was the whole Ivy / evil Superman dynamic. Hush himself is a weak character who only ever seems to come useful in Hush-centric storylines. Shame cause the Long Halloween/Dark Victory OC's are all so cool. Holliday, Hangman, the Irish Mob etc fleshed out Gotham so nicely. Seems like Jeph Loeb lost his touch
You're far from alone, I'm a massive Hush fanboy (I watched friggin *BATWOMAN* season 1 _only_ for him >
@@randallflagg3700 I forgot about that first Gotham episode. I actually really enjoyed it. What a despicable little brat he was there! If they'd followed through with it he could've been character you could really come to hate. Integrating him early on in that show was the right idea, but otherwise the Hush character is just too flimsy for me. Though I'll admit Heart of Hush was a huge improvement, thanks to Paul Dini.
@@randallflagg3700 Heart of Hush by Paul Dini is a way better story than Hush by Jeph Loeb
@@charliern - It would have indeed be nice if we got to see Tommy grew up in *Gotham* alongside Bruce, and see their fight with our own eyes
(in the New52, they stay friend until High-school, where Bruce cut ties between them after Tommy pretends to be him to sleep with some girl, long story).
But, well, can't have them all, *Gotham* was already pretty nice as it was.
And I agree with you and Joe Clarke, *"Heart of Hush"* was a great storyline.
I also have a soft spot for *Hush Money/The Houseof Hush* , also written by Paul Dini...
I also like *Gotham Knights: Human Nature* by A.J. Lieberman, in which Hush tries to get Poison Ivy to fall for him.
I was a little bit disappointed by the Hush storyline we got in Detective Comic early this year, when Hush and The Mirror stick the Bat-team at the same time, but at least we got Tommy back from the weird dimension he got stuck in before the BatCat wedding (in the Nightwing special).
@@randallflagg3700his side missions in arkham knight was just fine. Hush was never meant and doesn't work to be this big threat to Bruce Wayne's life or this big new villain. At best he's a minor nuisance to Batman, nothing really too major. Only hush fanboys got worked up over that. He was always a pretty petty and shady character. Nothing more, nothing less lmao.
As a guy who grew up on comics till 20. I only got back into comics through Hush 12 years later. Jim Lee's art got me hooked and then Geoff Johns stories kept me.
I was already watching some of your content I stumbled onto but the commitment of whispering through this entire video has caused me to subscribe congrats you absolute mad lad.
I remember reading it with all the hype behind it, but man, it was kind of boring shit 😂 Hush is a dumb shit villain with a garbage motivation.
Man I wish you had more views cause this is absolutely fantastic! And I hope to see you cover the long Halloween
Welp, time to rewind the video for the nth time. Keep falling asleep. Don't know why.
Funny you whisper for the one video i watch at night with someone sleeping in the room. Awesome video.
The whisper thing got old real fast
I would enjoy this video more if you gave up the ASMR gimmick. Yes it was funny for the intro but could do it for the entire video is a bit of a turn off. This is probably the only video that I wouldn't recommend to my friends because of that.
By the time HUSH was released, I had almost completely lost interest in Batman comics, so I didn't read the story until over a decade later. It's no KNIGHTFALL or A DEATH IN THE FAMILY, and it can't match ENDGAME for sheer epic drama, but it's entertaining enough on its own terms. The depictions of Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn are spot-on (especially in the case of Harley, since I could actually hear Arleen Sorkin's voice as I was reading), and it's a real treat to see the "classic" costumes (the Riddler's green derby, for example) in a modern setting. Jim Lee's artwork is excellent too: he depicted Croc degenerating even further into a beast, drew the Joker as so grotesque he looks almost like a white version of the Green Goblin, and captured the mixture of childlike innocence and psychotic menace that makes Harley Quinn such a poignant figure. I can't deny, though, that Hush himself is probably the lamest Bat-villain ever. Guy's so lazy he couldn't even come up with a good costume!
Can you please release a version of this that ISN'T an ASMR? I wanna watch this, but asmr weirds me out.
Agreed
please don’t commit to an average joke for 25+ mins again my man.
Why is the whispering so good? Like ASMR quality good.
Hey man...I feel sorry for you about the Linkara stalking...Dude is a man. Punch! Wears a pretty hat, I mean he has a magic gun, where did he purchase that?
guys, this is coming from the guy who thought a story where landmines was the biggest bad guy, was the darkest story of batman's
Yo this video could have been dope if you didn't whisper. Foreal its almost unwatchable
This was a fun vid, the asmr was annoying at first but eventually grew on me, excited for that Knightfall video too, can't wait to see it

Hush was the Riddler. Well, a zombie like version anyway. Not Thomas Elliot cuz he's like dead, dead.
The Riddler in the cell was Clayface.

Hey Smokey you seem to be a good judge of quality content. Should I bother reading The Long Halloween before watching the adaptation? Is it any good and with the hype?
The Ling Halloween is top three Batman stories of all time. The art is stunning. It’s sequel Dark Victory is top 10 Batman stories of all time. It’s prequel, haunted knight is top 25 all time. Literally everything that Tim Sale and Jeff Loeb work on together is lightning in a bottle. So yeah, I would definitely read it 😂

Didn't expect the story to get this loony.
You had to be there. Hush had everybody wondering and the community talking. It was an engaging ride. Sure the ending kinda blows but it was still a great experience
