I love this lens for stuff other than wildlife. I took it trackside at a time attack event where the 70-200 would be the typical choice, but at 600mm I got some cool shots of drivers faces in their helmets, a totally different perspective for on-track pictures
Love this idea! I’m gonna see if I can go to my local track and play with it!! Also planning to get the new Sigma 70-200mm DGDN soon, so I’m excited to have both of these crazy versatile lenses in my kit!
The honesty and sheer joy of photography really comes thru on this video. Glad you randomly popped up, and now ya got a new subscriber and I'm off to watch your rain cover vid lol
Oh, so I was at the international jazz fest on Montreal this year and took my a6600 and my Sony 70-350 (105-525 ff equivalent). I used it at a couple outdoor concerts and was blown away by that perspective. This weekend I'm off to the Pigeon Lake music festival in Alberta and hope to get similar results!
Thank you so much Bryan! Really glad you enjoyed the vide and I appreciate the sub as well! Hope you have a great weekend of festival photography with your Sony!
Malcom, this is fantastic. You hit on what I used to like shooting events was standing way back so no one was aware of the camera - it makes for some awesome, natural candid shots. That is a big lens but smaller than a 500 or 600 F4 prime. I am planning on renting that lens it when the A6700 is in stock at the place I use to rent gear, but for wildlife that I love and prefer shooting. I have reluctantly agreed to shoot a wedding in September and will be renting another R5, but I will have my 600 F4 on my harness with a 70-200 on the other camera on the harness..... AND .... the old D800 with my 85 F1.8 for a few other glamor type shots, but that will stay in the bag mostly with another short lens as well. The other awesome thing about using a longer focal length is the the distance itself compresses the background. Your F6.3, a little slow in low light, is still fantastic for what you were shooting and with the modern cameras, the higher ISO is not as big a deal as it was in the past. A fantastic video as always, and your shots are beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing. 🙏🤗💖
Thanks so much Jonny! Wow, you’re gonna be carrying a lot of weight in camera lenses when you shoot that wedding 😂. Like I said, in the video though, when a big 600mm lens is what you use most, you just get used to it right? Do you have a dual camera harness, or will you be using too shoulder straps?
@@malcomshootseverything You get used to the weight. I have to dig my old dual harness out for this one. When I am out shooting birds though, I mostly use the 600 hand held. I think it only weighs a little more than yours but a LOT less than my old 500!! 💖
I am revamping my gear ...planning to purchase the 200-600/5.6-6.3 in the next couple of months... I am lucky enough to be retired in Bangkok so street is my normal pastime... My girlfriend is also an avid photog and we generally watch each others back while out and about in public...cheers. (I am sure using a Sony A7S (mark 1-2 or 3) would help mitigate low light problems ...High ISO at the expense of resolution and a bit more noise.)
That should be very fun! The low light noise performance on the A7Siii is pretty remarkable, I've never used them for stills before though! Really curious to city Bangkok street photography done with a 200-600mm! That will be a very different look!
I have the sony 70-200mm gm ii, i love it. However, i’m a sucker for detail shots. Even when I’m standing in the barrier, and shoot at 200mm, I can’t get the extreme close up I want. Which is why I’m considering purchasing this 200-600mm lens
Interesting insight! I guess there is the Sony 100-400mm option as well, but I think I'd probably do the same as you are thinking and go with the 70-200mm and 200-600mm combo! What I can't decide is if I want the 70-200mm F2.8 or the new F4 Macro version!
@@malcomshootseverything So since there's quite a price difference between the two I get that you're in doubt. I'd just look at which one you need, do you need that extra open aperture. I personally LOVE an unsharp background. When I made the decision for the 70-200mm gm II, I looked at how good the autofocus performed since I shoot artists who move around a lot. and not to forget, It's smarter to invest in a lens rather than in a camera body, Lenses don't really go down in value that much. If you're professionally making money with photography I'd always recommend to invest in the better one, which even though I have not looked at the new f4 macro yet, given the big price difference I'm assuming the 70-200 f2.,8 gm oss ii is better. but idk. though decision though hah!
@@XricheeX Totally, I love a crushed background as well, and I could see really enjoying the extra low light capabilities in dark rooms as well....but I don't have a Macro photography lens at the moment, so being able to knock that off the list at the same time would be pretty darn cool! Ultimately, both seem like great lenses! Sony really delivered on these options!
Am here because I'm thinking of getting a Sigma 150-600, only video I found regarding using this kind of focal length for concerts and festivals. One think however, was the example at 14:30 really shot with the 200-600? The metadata says Viltrox 85mm F1.8, was it a mistake or am I missing something? I ask because low light limitations is one of the things I'm looking into.
You’re right! My mistake! I had thrown on the 85mm to try shooting from the photo pit for a few songs and I guess I missed that when putting together my selections for this video, my mistake but glad you caught it! I can speak to low light though, as it’s something I’ve butted into since then: I’m going to buy a 70-200 f2.8 for this exact reason. It’s great for sunny festival shots but the low light problems become too much (for my preferences). Modern denoising can fix a lot but I’ve decided that I’m gonna personally want a faster lens when I know the suns not going to be up!
nice video, i do videos in such events i use canon 70-200 f4 for the musicians or 16-35 for the audience. monopod is essential. ive tried without monopod and couldnt handle the weight for long especially for video. maybe i would get the 100-400 for daytime, or the canon 24-240 would really help not swapping lenses. as lens swap in such events is extremely hard.
Thank you! I forgot to mention but I filmed one set, and yes the monopod was absolutely crucial. With the 600mm I think I actually need to invest in a more stable monopod than what I have actually! How do you find the F4 when nighttime comes around?
@@malcomshootseverything the f4 is good, actually in daytime I prefer f5.6 and above as I want to get as much in focus; all the musicians. F4 is my base for low light. Yah a monopod is essential. Keep up the videos.
That’s great to hear! The new Sony 70-200 Macro F4 lens has me very interested but I wasn’t sure how the F4 would do for nighttime event shoots! Appreciate the insight!
Need to take a lot of photos in 2023 to pay for that, when some1 can do a promt image for near nothin. Not near as good but cheaper, so guess what will become the norm. DSLRs will be about as common as sextants soon i fear.
Personally I’m not convinced phone cameras will eliminate or compete in concert photography, especially when super-tele longer focal lengths are concerned! No way to get these types of shots on a phone camera! Phone cameras certainly are amazing but it’s a different, and limited, world entirely from what mirrorless and DSLRs can pull off with a good lens selection! But you’re right - this pro level camera gear sure is expensive haha! Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching eh!
“Bird Bazooka” so great!
It’s perfect isn’t it 😂
