      I suppose it depends. The weight is exactly why it's so stable, and I carried if overshoulder for a 30 min trek no problem. Mounted to my backpack, it's not an issue for longer than that. For photography, I could see people prioritizing portability, but for video I wouldn't bring anything less than this!

    Yeeeehaw! I went a little quick and dirty on this one as I wanted to get it done while the excitement and joy of getting this new Tripod setup was fresh - which is what this whole channel's all about! The Satchler Flowtech system, paired with the Sony 200-600mm has been a dream and I'm pretty darn excited to get more real world examples for you. Full review coming down the pipe later on! And yes, my dogs name is Festus.

    Theres 2 fix for this. 1) You only need to move the roll arm up after noting the measurement. Or 2) Lock it halfway. There is a mid point to the locking. But yeah thats the only complain for me too haha

    I use the Ulanzi F38 camera strap quick release, I have a plate on the foot and i added two peak design clips to each side, I felt like sometimes i was getting caught up in the strap and if I took one side off the strap would be dangling off the camera, with this setup I'm using the plate slides off when I need more space and the strap just hangs like a sling. Its pretty clutch and if you are using multiple lenses with feet and then just putting one the bottom of the body and any situation is covered.

    • @malcomshootseverything
      @malcomshootseverything 2 місяці тому

      The Ulanzi F38 system seems very interesting! And I know exactly what you mean with getting tangled up in the strap. I've been finding that I tend to get my horizon crooked when I've got a strap on my Sony (either the camera body or the 200-600mm) and have been using it less - but some days I just need to keep my hands free and available so a strap is a must! I'll try your system, thanks for the tip!

    The A7C II is basically a travel version of the A7IV plus AI tracking. You will either love it or hate it - and it comes down to the grip. If you have big hands, probably not an ideal camera. But, if you want the A7IV but wish it was smaller for a travel-friendly setup (with light lenses) - the A7C II is it. It is a more flexible camera than the A7R5 or A7CR since the sensor is better for hybrid shooting (photos + video). For me, I went with the A7R5 since Sony had a $400 off sale, otherwise I would have gone with the A7CR. But, that's because I want all the megapixels. Like you, I already have the A7C. I considered selling it but, honestly, the resell isn't very good - so I'd rather keep it as a backup/secondary and video camera. In a few months, I may consider picking up the A7C II as a travel camera. Although I'm saving up for the Sony 200-600. Man, this hobby is expensive. LOL

    • @malcomshootseverything
      @malcomshootseverything 3 місяці тому

      The trick is to call them expenses instead of expensive 😂 The A7R5 is an amazing camera, really enjoyed trying it out! So far I've kept my A7C for the same reason, I use it for my UA-cam video setup (saves me time setting it up, and bring it along whenever I have something that warrants a backup camera being on standby!)

    I am revamping my gear ...planning to purchase the 200-600/5.6-6.3 in the next couple of months... I am lucky enough to be retired in Bangkok so street is my normal pastime... My girlfriend is also an avid photog and we generally watch each others back while out and about in public...cheers. (I am sure using a Sony A7S (mark 1-2 or 3) would help mitigate low light problems ...High ISO at the expense of resolution and a bit more noise.)

      Hey! First off, crazy cool footage you got there! I think this focusing seems pretty expected honestly, there is water spray in front of the surfer, so it makes sense that it would get confused. I've done some surfing stuff before and went to manual focus fairly often and found that worked really well - just took some practice! I have the Sony a7IV for reference. I bet, however, that the newer AI Autofocus systems from Sony (like the A7RV) would probably kick butt in that scenario - just a theory though!

    I dont get how people emphasize how much of a pro the size of the camera is. Its amusing to me because youre using a 0.5 kg camera, opposed to a sony a7iv which is 0.65 kg. Attached on a lens like the 200-600, the size of the a7iv feels so much nicer, and no you dont notice 150 grams of extra weight.

    Thanks for the video! I bought the a7c and now i amb a little bit unsure about what super telephoto lens i should buy. In summer I will go to Greece to take some photos of seals while on a boat. So my fear is that maybe 200-600mm is too much at 200mm if they get too close to the boat. I am also considering sigma 60-600mm or even sigma 100-400mm but maybe 400 is too short. If you could give me some advice I would be really happy because it has been on my mind for too long. Thank you so much!! And sorry if I said something wrong in english as it isn’t my native language.

      I love my Sony 200-600mm, and use the 600mm a ton, but I have to admit, I understand why some people find it too large and too heavy! I don't mind it (even if I'm sore after a long day, it's all part of it for me) but for some that would be too much discomfort. And add a boat into the equation and things get real tricky! If you can, get your hands on a 200-600mm and see if it seems like something you can see yourself packing and swinging around all day long. If not, probably best to go for the 100-400mm which will be quite a bit easer to shoot handheld. You can always get the Sony teleconverter down the road too if you need the reach! Hope this helps!

    I also have the a7c, I’m looking at an upgrade. The cameras I’m looking at are Sony a1, pricy though, a7r5, that has banding and bending issues. I mainly shoot portrait and wedding. No videos.

    • @malcomshootseverything
      @malcomshootseverything 8 місяців тому

      If you can afford it, I'd go with the Sony A1! I've used the Sony A7R5 and it's great. The banding and bending thing is of course possibly an issue but wasn't an issue in my real world use cases. I photographed flying bald eagles all day with it and they came out really crisp. The rolling shutter would be more of an issue with video, which you don't need to worry about - so the A7RV could be great for you potentially! My only thought is that it's not great with low light performance, so if you're shooting in dark environments a lot it's worth thinking about at least. In either case, exciting times for you! Always love getting a new camera!

      If all you care about is photography with video taking a backseat. The A7R5 is a megapixel monster - which is great for cropping. You will give up some sensitivity for it, so might not be the most ideal camera for dimly lit church weddings. You might want to rent one to make sure. But, for landscape or portraits in which you can control the light - the A7R5 will be an excellent camera.

      The Sony 200-600 does have a focus range setting slider (second slider from the top). I usually have this set to FULL, but occasionally click it to infinity-10m if close foreground elements are causing focus mistriggers! Aside from that slider, and the more obvious auto/manual focus slider above it, those should be the only related lens controls that would affect your autofocus performance. Hope that helps!

    Thank for your video. May I ask you something? actually I consider to buy a7c or a6700. because my a7r3 has good resolation, but I always don't like a7r3's low light condition noise. so I think I have 24m full frame camerea, lager pixel area need to help less noise. But I never used a 24m full frame body, so I'm not sure really 24m FF sensor reduce noise. Besides as you know that crop body has a advantage for telephoto angle. now I ask your opinion. when I take a bird photo, which body is more helpful to bird photo a6700 or a7c?

      Although the noise should be better on the A7C than say my A7IV - I haven’t really found that to be the case, despite the sensor size. The image just looks way better on my A7IV! The A7R3 is a really great camera, and I think you’d really miss all the controls you have available if you moved to an A7C honestly (I personally need that joystick for spot focusing!) The A7C stabilization also isn’t great, in my opinion. Great little camera, but I’d personally stick with your A7R3 in this situation! I honestly don’t have any experience with the Sony A6700, so I’ll refrain from commenting on that!

    Am here because I'm thinking of getting a Sigma 150-600, only video I found regarding using this kind of focal length for concerts and festivals. One think however, was the example at 14:30 really shot with the 200-600? The metadata says Viltrox 85mm F1.8, was it a mistake or am I missing something? I ask because low light limitations is one of the things I'm looking into.

    • @malcomshootseverything
      @malcomshootseverything 8 місяців тому

      You’re right! My mistake! I had thrown on the 85mm to try shooting from the photo pit for a few songs and I guess I missed that when putting together my selections for this video, my mistake but glad you caught it! I can speak to low light though, as it’s something I’ve butted into since then: I’m going to buy a 70-200 f2.8 for this exact reason. It’s great for sunny festival shots but the low light problems become too much (for my preferences). Modern denoising can fix a lot but I’ve decided that I’m gonna personally want a faster lens when I know the suns not going to be up!

    Hi ,Malcon which would you recommend between 200-600 or 70-200 f.2.8 gm II with Sony a6700 maybe with a 2x teleconverter

    • @malcomshootseverything
      @malcomshootseverything 8 місяців тому

      Hey Claudio! I’m about to purchase a 70-200 actually! (I’m going for the new Sigma 70-200 DG DN) but I’m definitely keeping my Sony 200-600mm as well. For wildlife, the 600 is just amazing, and I’ve had luck with it in daytime events too, but the 70-200 is a much more versatile lens to me. It’s just a beast for events, can be great for portraits, documentary filming, you name it! If your focus is wildlife photography I’d go with the Sony 200-600mm but if you just want a versatile lens with a solid reach, grab the 70-200mm (Sony or the Sigma!) Just a note on the tele converter option, it will certainly be cool - but there is a big difference between 400mm and 600mm - which is why I recommend the 200-600mm for most peoples wildlife desires! It’s truly so satisfying!

    So when I travel I want it for some landscape better than my iPhone 13 Pro and maybe some wild life and street photography like in the city. What’s recommended?

      The new Sony A7Cii might be a good choice for you! I think it’s definitely a huge upgrade from the original A7C. That said, the Sony A7iii is on sale right now for a really solid price for a great full frame camera too! However, you may want to consider APSC Sony bodies and lenses (like the Sony 6700). The lenses are much more affordable and generally smaller, which is great for travel! I don’t personally own any APSC stuff so I can’t speak to it with any first hand experience but it seems like that could be worth exploring for you!

    exactly the same problem with my 200-600. Purchased December 2020. Great lens, but a few days ago, it just stopped connecting to my camera. Tried cleaning contacts. Tried connecting to another camera. No success. Sending in for repair soon. How long did your repair take? I'm hoping for 30-60 days, but I wouldn't be surprised if it took months.

      Ah so sorry to hear you’re having the same issue! The repair process ended up not being too painful actually and the lens now works fantastically! I made a video about the repair (should be a link to it in the description of this video if you want to check it out). I believe it was only around a month to get it back!

      Hmm that seems very odd! My Sony Lena collar is super smooth. I assume you’ve got it loosened fully when it’s doing this? I’d suspect something has gotten worked under the lens collar and needs to be cleaned somehow!

      @malcomshootseverything unfortunately the collar clicks when it's tightened as well as when it's looking. Thinking I will take it to a local shop near me and see what they can do. Thanks for the input!

    I love this lens for stuff other than wildlife. I took it trackside at a time attack event where the 70-200 would be the typical choice, but at 600mm I got some cool shots of drivers faces in their helmets, a totally different perspective for on-track pictures

    Man I’m so thankful for this video - I’ve had this lens for a month and the struggles I’ve had is adjusting to the things you mentioned, to the point I’ve been starting to regret my choice. My images don’t come out as expected or as sharp and I’ve not quite got used to the adjustment I’m needing to make with settings. So seeing you discuss these is reassuring that it’s not just me!

      Appreciate the comment! Which Sony camera body are you using with the 200-600mm out of curiosity? Since I've got my Sony A7iv I've definitely realized that not all bodies are equal. I get way more keeper sharp photos on the A7IV then I did with my A7C!

    Thanks for the review. I’m looking at picking up this camera to try. Mainly as a small travel set up. While I’m not a dedicated wildlife shooter I would like to use a 200-600 a few times a year. But, mainly use it with the kit lens and a couple of 1.8 primes in a small bag.

      Hey Bob! Glad you liked the video! I think I’d have to suggest the new Sony A7Cii if you want a body this small, the improvements are worth it if you ask me! That all said, I recommend you check out my A7IV review as well because honestly, if I could go back, I’d skip the a7c entirely and go with the Sony A7iV in a heartbeat! Such an amazing camera for all styles!

    Another thought for $42 a year I have 0 deductible insurance on all my camera gear which covers all perils everywhere in the world. With that my Pancho and the number of times amount of times I want to photograph in the rain I’m covered. If you live in a rainforest you’ll need a raincoat for your gear as a practical matter.
