- Setup an old school Steve Caballero (reissue) skateboard part2.
This is the second part on how to set up an old skool (school) 80s skateboard.
The idea was to build my dream board. The board i always wanted as a kid. I always wanted that deck, Slimeballs and Gull wing trucks.
In this video we will set up the following:
1 x powell peralta steve caballero deck.
2 x Gull wing trucks.
4 x Santa Cruz Slime Balls Maggots
8 x Bones Reds
2 x Bones Rails
1 x Bones Tail Saver
Watch part 1 here:

Special Thanks to my mate Rob for buying me the board for my birthday and www.conflictskates.co.uk for selling me the rest of the setup :)

Can't tell you how big a smile is on my face right now seeing a Caballero with Gullwings and Slimeballs. I haven't seen anything like this since 1991, when I was 12, and skateboarding was my life. Magic. This was a golden age for skateboarding. Thanks for sharing!
I just got a Street Cab ( bats n bones) in silver last week (early Father’s Day present) from SoCal and ordered some GullWing Street Shadows from TGM skateboards for $28 bux for a pair! #BonesBrigade#Cab#GullWingArmy#🛹🔥🤘🏻
I dont know.you!¡!
Im tired of being like this only,????
Parang gaga ako
A happy fathers day to you!!!!
Wanted to see somebody assemble an 80s deck from scratch with VISUALS and not BS. Glad I found it. 10/10 mate.
Such a classic set-up! Stoked to ses this!! As a 45 year old skater this brings back so many good memories!! Thank you for the great video!!
gullwings and slimeballs were far from good. they still suck today. the groove in the middle is exactly the wrong place for grinds. slime balls are barely better than plastic walmart wheels. people like him are the ones responsible for making everyone believe nash was a good skateboard.
Just watched this and I just built a reissue Scott Oster Dogtown board with 169 independent trucks , Redd's bearings ,3/8 Dogtown risers and 78a-75mm Mercer wheels. Love it!
One of my favorite old School cab decks.
Super satisfying to watch
Badass build. MY first build in 30plus years i just did is:
Deck: Per Welinder NORDIC SKULL oldshool deck shape reissue in Blue
Grip tape: Powell Peralta Ripper custom cut
Trucks 159 Slayer Indys in Silver
Wheels: White Dragon Formulas 58mm
Bearings: Bones Super Reds
Psycho 1/2 red risers
RatBones Red Rails with Silver oldschool Sex bolts
NOS Red Powell Peralta 8icnh Tailbone with rat nuts
Bones white Bushings, swapping between mediums and hards
Nice vid!!! I really like old school Powell Peralta decks.
Dem curves
Dang bruh you brought back good crazy old memories just watching you set up that deck...and our tool was called an elephant wrench...Solid on the grip tape ya!!..back then on some of my older decks I would paint the whole bottom a solid color then draw out a graphic design like the bottom of the vans shoe and then regrip the deck with 4’ cut up wave lines across or different cut outs and colors on New decks or a full clear grip...I just made mine look different... some guys would ask me if it was a new deck from a pro skater.. Old Skool Rulze 😎🤙🏽
Nice. And with the grip tape as well.
Bullet 66 were insane! They refuse to reissue these besides the yellow ones about 12 years back I beleive. The NOS sets on ebay are selling for $599.00 Thats ridiculous but to each his own. Red & black 90a would be decent at $39.99 tops.
They are back
Next should be a Mini Cab. I remember the mini line from Powell and I had a Mini Tommy Guerrero. My buddy had a mini Lance Mountain.
I just got this shape on hot pink, just waiting on the rest of the parts to come in the mail!
Such a nice board! I want one now ahahahha
Hella yeah brother rad setup 🙌🏽 it’s like the same setup as mine except if got a set of black G Bones although it’s not the same setup I had back in the 90’s it’ll do till they rerelease the mechanical cab fluoro green deck
love this man
havent seen gull wing trucks in ages, all I could recall is they weighed a lot, I had the GW V 3 if I can recall, nothing beats Tracker Trucks for ramp skating just my opinion.....OJ's were bigger than Slime Balls back in that era....I rode OJ 2 like I have on my channel in white...dont forget they had thunderbolts and U bolts in that time.....Thunderbolts were boss
Awesome dude!
Hello! What trucks would you put on this table? What brands and sizes do you recommend?
I always buy reds and white orbs wheels, but I really like the green wheels.
That is a Gorgeous setup!! Why don't u let us see u ride it? Great tutorial too! 👍
Awesome vid, thanks for sharing.
I'm about to do the same thing with a different coloured version of that board so this has been great to watch.
How does the final setup perform? Anything you would change? Are you happy with the axle width and height?
I'm tossing up between the slimeballs vs some powell 97a Gbones.
Thanks again for sharing this info.
Matt
Matt's Fishing Blog . That’s great mate . You will love it . So fast and great fun to ride :)
That’s a sick setup bro I need to re grip my per welinder one and get some new hardware because my Someone at my skatepark dumped coke on it.
A bit late, but how is it riding with a tail guard? I haven't ridden any old-school boards and I'm planning to, but I'm unsure whether I should get a tailguard or does it make it hard to ollie
What no nose bone? Looks great. But also needs rip grip just for some authenticity. Had the mcguill with g and s trucks and g bone wheels.
never used nose bones OR tail bones back in the day...was considered for beginners..remember, these boards were our STREET boards...this is a street cab
I love the layout only thing that I didn’t really like was the green wheels well that’s just my opinion still a great board
Needed black or red for sure!
What size tail bone fits this board?
What size trucks are they and what are the dimensions of the deck?
Could you please tell us where you got all your parts that fit the old school truck configuration?
Randquez sorry for the late reply . I got some on eBay and the rest here www.conflictskates.co.uk/gullwing-super-pro-iii---baku-skateboard-trucks-90-old-skool-black-dmodw-22228-p.asp
TGM skateboards has GullWing Street Shadow trucks for $28 a pair with old bolt pattern for new re-issue decks. I skated them in late 80’s and got 3 new pair because Indys with 6 hole baseplates are getting hard to find.#🛹🔥🤘🏻#GullWingArmy#StreetShadows
I’d rather get ricta cloud wheels but slime balls are great 👌
I would prefer cross bones I dream of them wish powell would bring them back best wheels ever back then !!!
@@garrieleepeck8753 rat bones are cool but a little wide..I would go bombers or powell skull/sword
Blood Eagle 88 60mm is, from what i can tell the most common size. i see almost everybody riding them or wheels just smaller.
@@garrieleepeck8753 yes! And reissue Mini Rats! I bought 2 sets of the NOS Mini Rat II and they were not cheap to me, $45 a set
I also have the 56mm 78a Chrome clouds! Super smooth and are actually faster than hard urethane at the parks. Btw the series 3 ML bearings are for sure faster than regular reds. They have 2 removable shields. The previous ones with the metal shields were horrible...
I like the top graphic
Number Thread thanks. I did another video cutting it out . ua-cam.com/video/sBgsoGMpyco/v-deo.html
How many inches were the risers you put on?
With the rails so widely placed, doesn't the center of the board bottom out on certain rail slides?
What size trucks are those?
The gullwing trucks are so high you probably don’t need any risers with 60mm wheels, maybe 1/4 for loose trucks.
What kind of trucks do I need for these I want really big wheels
149 indy's or thunder is perfect especially for big wheels. I had 64mm Powell Bombers on my Cab Dragon. I cut the grip in triangles to look like shattered glass! Cost me over $250 usd
the gullwing pro iii trucks are 58mm high. with 60mm wheels you should definitely take off the risers.
With 55 height independent Trucks would a 1/8 th shock pad suffice for 60 mm wheels?
@@thecanadiandavid600 Every 1/8 pad is about +6mm of wheel room. Depends on how tight you want your trucks to be, and your board concave. I usually ride with 1/4 risers, it just feels nice to me, but it will probably work. Would be the same height as these trucks with no risers.
@@thecanadiandavid600 Update: I ride hard 60mm wheels without any riser pads now. You just wax the wells, it's easy!
Slap some G-Bones
I really dig those graphics - the Caballero dragon. I would have also liked to have the Powell Peralta dragon logo on the top like they had in the 80s. I know that this was primarily intended as a street board but is it also suitable for a mini ramp / shallow bowl? Also, I assume these decks are still made from hard maple?
They’re great for carving bowls sorry for the late reply
This looks sick for that!
What size are those trucks?!
😍wow! Probably one of the best setups I’ve ever seen. Just one thing, the wheels should have a tiny amount of wiggle so that they spin freely and as fast as possible.
Nah, when you use spacers, you can pretty much tight the nut down completely. The wheels will roll amazingly stable and as fast or even faster. You need the wiggle only when you are NOT using spacers. When I found out myself, I just put spacers in all my wheels, in all my decks.....The things we don't know...try it!
not with spacers dude
You should put a nosegaurd and a lapper on that radical board
I did that with my new lance mountain series 12
What wheels could I use besides these? preferably bigger thanks!
Slime balls have big balls wheels and Powell peralta has g bones. They go up to 65mm
Nice cab setup bro. I really don't dig the cheap new powell mounting system of just screws. Get your hands on some old school rat nuts or sex nuts, drill out holes then countersink threads through the top of the deck. The new ribs mount up all good with rat nuts. Tail bone needed the holes enlarged a tad and 8mm flat mill countersunk 3-4mm to mount up like the old ones. They really should make the old rat nuts again!
Yeah I know i'm late to the party here. Building a powell ripper and dont like the woodscrews either. I ordered all new rat nuts to attach my tail and rails. Found them online
What size trucks
do you have any clips of you using one of those things there? or do you just play with them like barbie dolls and dress them up?
Be honest, how heavy is this bad boy? How hard was it getting used to flat ground? I just made my setup and am having a hell of a time with ollie's.
The street Cab is light..Its only 9.65x29.75 in dimensions (about the size of a mini) I would recommend even 149 trucks as the deck tapers over the trucks to only 8 inches...you can get away with 159's though. People forget about the taper with spoon nose decks..Just because the deck maybe almost 10" wide at its widest point, over the trucks is a different story. P.S I learned to Ollie on the fullsize version of this deck...in the 80s thats what we had to skate. If we all did it back then, you can do it now lol
@@Tommyblueeyes This is very true...9.98 / 8 - 60mm wheels. Do you think I can opt for 159s? I really want to go that way because of deep tail taper. Thanks for all your good old school advice, I'm certainly heading that way again, ollies, NP! lol.
@@seekah1 149's are flush with that deck front and back!
@@Tommyblueeyes should i go with 159s? Cause i cant find any 149s with a 6 hole baseplate... and 149s are pretty small imo
@@sleepcapsule6472 159s will be awesome man...its what I used to ride with this exact board..80s decks are always great wit 159s....I would always avoid 169s though...just more a stomper truck
is that board flat or concave?
What size are those trucks
8.75
Please , please powell bring back cross bones I dream of them i love them wheels best old school ever why they not back just don't get you see people begging for them !!!
Looks great I had one back.in the day I just bought the 11th complete natraul powell.decks they looks so nice I'm more of a collector now got around 30 og from the 80es I'n perfect condition lot of Powell. H street stabb vision ," many but I never keep.any cross bones I just don't understand why they not bring them back I never like rat bones but cross bones best wheel I believe best wheels ever back in the day I still think they best now need thousands of people to beg powell to bring them back the greatest wheels ever
Quick question: Whats the durometer on them wheels?
Hi . They are 40.4mm wide
That's not the durometer is it? I think theyre asking like 80a or what?
He says it when he shows them! 78A.
Where were you able to get this??
GiZMO mcSnAzZy Minato Sensei
I am about to built an old school re issue skateboard. Do those risers have to be about 1/2" or smaller will do too??
Nice video btw.. Now i know how to fit the tailbone and rails. :)
Glafkos Obion hello mate . It all depends on the size of your wheels. If you have large wheels like what I have or t bones for example you want to lift them more so you don’t get wheel bite when carving. If you have small wheels you could get away with a thinner one ☝️ by the way . Another person commented that it’s a good idea to drill the holes for the tale bone before gripping the board ;) glad you like the vid 🛹😎
1/4 if you like loose trucks, 1/8 if you like tight trucks will do. If you like them extremely loose and have no grooves, 1/2 inch, but that might make it too high. I reccomend 1/4
56 - 58 no risers, 56 - 61 1/4, 60 - 66 1/2. For medium - loose trucks. Tight might be less risers.
@Blood Eagle 88 wrong i skate 60mm with loose trucks and anything over 1/4 is over kill.., 1/2 is to high for any street use. And if you comprehend their comments correctly tight trucks would give less chance of wheelbite so in return you wouldnt need as much clearance.
@Blood Eagle 88 lol look here kiddo i skated all through out the 80s...and never did i need 1/2 risers, and when I did try them it made our boards a fucking sky scraper..especially once the aggressive (steeper) kick in the tails became popular like on alot of the h-street and PP decks, its really all just a personal preference but dont come at me like I dont have a fucking clue what I'm talking about. 88 huh? You're not even old enough to have been more than a little shit head in the 90s when the trends changed to straight rails and small wheels with absolutely no fucking risers lol. They say arrogance is used by the weak and your full of that my friend, go on with your trendy ass!
Hello didn’t hear you mention it but how much was the total us been thinking about buying one
Probably close to $200
Thanks
@@popeoscar6781 that's just a guess but your welcome and good luck
Lukas Kucera lol I skate but wasn’t sure how much those decks are with riser pads and the soft wheels were so I wasn’t sure if the price range was different
@@popeoscar6781 cool where are you from. So I looked it up and I substituted the trucks for Independents because I couldent find the ones in the video and an estimated total is $174
What size hardware did u use
maddox melton what do you mean by hardware? The drill ?
The nuts and bolts are INDEPENDENT INDY PHILLIPS BOLTS 1.5"
Hat size are the trucks?

8.75
Would indy 169 work with a 9.625 deck
Fisher Burney yeah I recommend 159 though
@@marmooki Everyone is recommending 169s for 9.8 for my setup/style, I'm going for that.
Anyone mind giving me the link to this board?
chowder this is where I got the trucks . I think they have the board to www.conflictskates.co.uk/gullwing-super-pro-iii---baku-skateboard-trucks-90-old-skool-black-dmodw-22228-p.asp
The risers are too big for those wheels but its a sweet setup
The tailbone decreases deck pop, the tall risers help bring it back.
I found one of these yesterday at a corner shop and I was able to buy it for $100
The complete board or just the deck ???
The deck only I made the rest of it with my dad
Burt Man it was the blue vert too so I was hyped and my dad was pissed because he bought the green orange one for $200 +
@@ethanmunoz5025 $100 is a lot, but the prices are going up all over USA and powell gave the boards to skateshops at malls and they sold for $59.99 tops. Now they're $75 and up. And the veneer is thinner than in the 80s
@@ethanmunoz5025 damn!!! The malls here in Texas have them in every shop. Just 1 or 2 tho cuz they push popsicles all day! Lol

Ricky Spires thanks pal! I am looking for a good set of wheels for transport, so, those are perfect!
Ivan Bartolome Garcia like the super juice but more of a trick shape!
I like old school boards but rip The Nollies and Nollie flips
Is an 80s skateboard a cruiser board?
Shawn Haynes kind of
marmooki james thanks for letting me know
Theyre usually made for transition but you can still do some flip tricks on em if you’re good.
Back in the day they were the everything board. Built for vert. Ramps, bowls but street too. Only now are the considered cruisers. All the tricks known today started on these boards. So I say no, theyre not.
Yes and no. Like how a popsicle usually is used mostly for cruising if it has cruiser wheels, an old school deck is mostly for tricks if it has spitfire f4 or something (at least 56, preferably 60 for an 80’s deck.)
white rails would have looked beast!
young savage yeah definitely!
159 mm trucks for this deck???
Barrier Kult trucks 😱 wtf no way

Santa Cruz wheels on a Powell.....?
The idea was to build my dream board. the board i always wanted as a kid. and i always wanted that deck, slimeballs and gull wing trucks. I don't really mind having santa cruz on a Powell deck :)
Ricky Spires ....it's an awesome board, as a kid my cousin had the black cab.....
I had a hand me down McGill, and a hand me down welinder....my cousin was such a butt head never let me ride his board....now he's like 250 lbs.
I'm still skating.....
Keep pushing my friend.....👍👍
lol...I am a Powell vs Santa Cruz guy since the 80s (despite being a noob at skateboarding since I quit for 27 years and restarted at 41..). I was thinking the same thing!!!! However, I have a Natas setup now with Slimeballs and they are great for cruising and ollies and staff...I admit I like them better than my bombers in my Guerrero setup (and they are far better than rough riders as well)..So I am really tempted.....For all other regular decks if you attack UK asphalt, you can't go wrong with Soft Slides 85a...Anything above 92-95a basically is NOT rolling in UK streets.
irmasil3 anything above that hardness won’t work anywhere but newly built skate parks and tarmac. Except spitfire classics or f4s.
irmasil3 hey mate. Happy to hear you came back. I also quit 27 years ago but last week it hit me hard when I bought a skateboard to my little boy (5 years). I am almost 41 as well. Somehow the passion and dream is now alive again. It’s crazy but I’m so happy.
I think it would have been easier to drill the holes before you gripped it
LWOLF200 I think 🤔 your right :) next time 😉😀
Nah the grip tape could stop the board from chipping even though it probably won't matter cause well its a skateboard and it's inevitable that you bang it somehow
I also drilled after gripping, but I drilled from the bottom so I had no problem with it.
NOW DO A PRIMO BOARD SLIDE GRIND IN SWITCH
Lol it was only the young grommits who used to use skidplates, copers etc
I ride 60mm wheels no risers
Yeah, gonna try first, not sure though.
@@seekah1 try em 60mm Bones SPF are great
@@ERich950 Different deck but still oldschool, a little wider than this, just under 10...going with slime balls but can't decide with truck size, prob 169 Indy but can I get away with smaller width? Prob not. Gonna keep it tight, eventually swap out bushings, no risers maybe and see what happens. Would love to see this in action, looks too nice to rip into.
seekah1 169s, you need to swap out bushings for Indy’s unless you ride them super loose, I had to add risers to my deck and still can’t pump to get speed because of the trucks. I use an old pop for vert now, that deck is more a cruiser now.
Do you even skate bro :-)
You shouldn't have drilled through the tail guard! Just place it on the bottom and mark the holes like it said on the instructions! 😅😅😅
Who are u.are you friend of mine?
I always put the trucks on b4 the grip tape, Never liked seeing the screw heads poking thru
Those wheels are on WAY too tight. Even cheap bearings should spin for a good 20 - 30 seconds.
he added spacers and washers to the wheels your suppose to tightin the nut when your putting on your wheels so it'll still spin no matter how tight it is
Yea
spacers allow the bolts to be a lot tighter without damage
@@lucawelch5802 yeah, but wouldn't you prefer to go fast?
But that’s why they are there to prevent friction and in the end feel smoother and role faster
