This is an amazing pedal but if anyone isnt aware yet Empress is a great company as well. Ive had this pedal for a couple years now, i got it not long after launch. Has it been 3 years? Anyways, mine developed scratchy pots on the input and output pots (and this isnt Empress's fault in anyway, pots become scratchy sometimes and likely says more about my dusty dog filled house then their components lol). So I contacted Empress about the pots and they truly COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE HELPFUL. I was disappointed in the prospect of having to send my pedal in for repair and they offered to just send me replacement pots so i could repair it myself since i mentioned i build guitar amps, pedals etc and repair old tube radio receivers as a hobby. This is insanely uncommon but incredibly kind of them. I never in a million years expected a pedal company to be this accommodating. Plus they make incredible pedals. This compressor is perfect anywhere in your signal chain unlike most compressors because they added the input control and and Output for make up gain etc. Thats exactly what i wanted out of a compressor and its exactly what i wasnt getting out of my diamond comp optical compressor clone (also an incredible sounding pedal but not in the same league as the Empress MKII as far as versatility goes). Anyways i checked the mail a few hours ago and there was the pots that Empress told me they would send just 2 or 3 days ago at the most. I live in Texas and im pretty sure Empress is in Canada (they are just checked the package lol) so they went out of their way to send me my pots fast. This company is a class act. And not only did they send the Input and Output pot they also sent me a Mix pot for good measure AND a dope Empress sticker (which i wanted so bad cause i gave my first one that came with the pedal to my wife....reluctantly lol) AND a few guitar picks. Extra swag along with free parts on a warranty repair....let that sink in. Im in awe of what a great company Empress is. So if anyone is on the fence about trying an Empress product i can assure you that they make great products and if a component does develop an issue (even if like in my case it wasnt their fault in any way) they will stand by their product and get you back up and running in no time.
Every time i watch you demo a compressor I learn more about the dark art of compression. Thank you.
That's the goal! Mastering a compressor is like learning unlocking the secrets to the universe, haha
Could you share your personal ranking of compressors, which is your favorite, which one you use most often at concerts, which one is in second place, etc.?
No way you shouldn’t be on a stage. Such expressive looking and outstanding sounding playing! Thx!
Haha thanks! With the world slowly opening again, it looks like I'll will be back to the road soon :)
Powerful video, powerful player! The Cali 76 compact deluxe just wasn't clean and neutral enough to me, so I sold it. I had the 1st version Empress compressor before. Now the MK II has become even more flexible and better. For me, the MKII is currently the best compressor on the world market.
All the knobs, any given day. These new models from Empress were just what I was wishing someone would actually make and now I own both models, Bass and MKII (which just recently, finally, arrived!). Amazing devices and I got so much inspiration from this video, thank you!
Couldn't agree more!
Would the non bass version work for bass too?
It would. As far as I know they are virtually identical anyway. You can adapt this to bass very easily anyway due to extremely flexible controls. HPF gives you some fine tuning options to how it triggers on bass, and you can really precisely dial your input to work with both low output guitar pickups, and punchy bass pickups. @@voodoornb
Killer demo and thank you for demoing the side chain input
A lot of control and connectivity in a small form factor - nice
All the knobs!!! Total control of attack release and all points in between 🤘🏽
All the knobs, all the tone, all the time, haha
live life dimed.
Thanks for the great vid, love your playing!
Thank you kindly!
You are a godsend! Finally, somebody who plays guitar with the same level of aggression I do. Similar tone preference too! It’s so hard to judge these compressors when the people demoing them sound nothing like your own playing.
Yeah!! Us heavy handed folk need to look out for each other :)
Great video! Showed me everything I was wondering about.
Glad it helped!
Always appreciate your original sounds.
I like both types of compressor pedals; simple 2-knob ones like the Rothwell Love Squeeze and more complicated dial-in compressors. This one looks cool cuz it’s compact
Still haven't tried the Rothwell, I hear those are awesome!
Really good playing!
Thanks!
Awesome vid. My fave compressor. More nobs for me…
It's a great one! Hours of fun in a box :)
always a pleasure to tune in to some JLJ. Fantastic playing!
Quick question, I noticed the Tone King is getting more of a workout recently then the Benson. Are you leaning more towards the tone of that amp, or is it just a bit better for showcasing pedals? I have been looking at buying both for quite awhile.
Great question. I've been using the Tone King a lot more recently actually for two reasons:
1. Most people recognize the Blackpanel Deluxe style sound more than the Benson sound, so I find it helps people hear the pedal a bit more than the amp.
2. The two channels make it a little easier for me to switch between overdriven and clean tones.
That being said, my Chimera is one of my prized possessions and a major part of the sounds I love making with guitar.
I wanna be like JLJ when I grow up.
Im a bass player, you’ld think right? But no, hands down best demo I I have listened to.
Also love your guitar, man.
Bass is exactly what that Sidechain function is for. Works great with the bass :)
Yes but can it "BLOOM" (?)
Dude your playing is incredible. I’m trying to get there. One day at a time right?
For my favorite artist that used that setup??? I think Hendrix used it. I know he was Marshall-heavy though. Also maybe Derek Trucks but, I don’t think he uses pedals. Either way… those are 2 studs!
Legends!
You’re so cool dude
Thanks!
Great vid. Compressors have to be one of the hardest pedals to demo on UA-cam. I think everyone needs both types of pedals…a 2-knob play and go and a more studio chock-full-o-knobs pedal!! ;)
So good! Think we might need a compressor shoot out video!
YES!
How does it compare to the Origin Effects Cali 76 compact deluxe? :)
The Cali76 add a lot of the 1176 color into your tone (which can be awesome!!) where the Empress is a little bit more modern sounding.
@@JayLeonardJ thank you. Have you compared the cali76 vs the walrus deep 6?
Nice job Jay. I love the passion in your playing, it’s inspiring.
I’m currently in the market for a compressor and would love to get your opinion. I’ve tried the Keeley Compressor Plus and Fender The Bends. The Keeley was to noisy with the blend knob up past 9:00 and the bends was quiet but too subtle. Is there a good compressor that’s right in the middle? Would something like the Dyna-ssoR be a good choice? I want something that can be subtle and squashy but not too noisy. Im looking in the $200 range. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Suhr Koji Comp.
Empress Compressor MKII vs Keeley Compressor Pro?
Think FET vs VCA. I like setting the Keeley in automatic for a clean DBX160 vibe. The Empress has a really nice subtle character to it that really fattens up the sound nicely
I had to rewatch your old Keeley Compressor Pro video. Both sound so good! I have the Keeley, but maybe it’s time for a second board? Lol
Hey JLJ, we haven’t had a pedalboard rundown from ya. When are you going to let us see what YOU use?
Great idea! You might be surprised by how many old school pedals you will find on that thing, haha
which of the two do you prefer?
